Finding the best tri suit (men's) for your needs can be a huge challenge due to the vast amount of factors and features to consider beforehand. There are short-sleeved, sleeveless, full body, two piece tri suits for men, and more, all with varying pros and cons...

Here at OriGym, we’ve taken the guesswork out of finding the right suit and compiled a comprehensive list of men's triathlon suit reviews to make the process a whole lot easier for you!

Before we dive in, does the idea of helping others along in their fitness journey ignite a passion within you? If so, take a look at our Level 4 personal trainer course, or download our free course prospectus here to find out how to begin a rewarding career within the fitness industry.

What is a men's tri suit?

A men’s tri suit - or triathlon suit to give them their full name - is basically a specially designed outfit for men to wear whilst they’re participating in a triathlon.

You’re probably wondering - what’s wrong with a running top and my trusty pair of joggers? Well, a triathlon traditionally consists of three sporting disciplines; swimming, cycling, and running, and these all require different fabrics, features, considerations, and added extras in order to be as efficient as possible. Men’s tri suits are available as one complete suit or as a men’s two piece tri suit, and with a variety of designs and prices.

#1 - 2XU Compression Full Suit

Price: £160.00

2xu tri suit mens review

Australian brand 2XU is a big name in the world of triathlons, and their compression suit is considered the best men's tri suit on the market by many. It may not have undergone the rigorous evolution of some of the newer brands on the list, but why alter a classic?

This suit will cover all your triathlon needs, but the level of comfort and durability makes it especially suited for longer races (even those stretching to Ironman distance). The compression element of the suit helps to supply more oxygen to your muscles and can prevent the painful build-up of lactic acid. The patented PWX 105D power mesh fabric molds perfectly to your body and provides muscle mapping and increased stabilisation during the running and cycling sections of the race. For the right nutrition plan to best fuel your cycling, read our post on cycling nutrition plans!

Throw in special Swiss Vent fabric for industry-leading breathability that still provides a lot of UV protection, and you’ve got a suit that's perfect for all weather conditions. There are easily accessible pockets on the rear (which is more aerodynamic than front facing pockets), and a full length zipper for added ventilation.

Join 1000s of other Fitness and Health enthusiasts and get updates packed with career advice, nutrition tips, product reviews and more

The suit is designed to enhance endurance and prevent injury over longer distances, but anyone will benefit from the moisture management fabric and compression. It’s no wonder that the 2XU tri suit (men's) is so popular! If you’re searching for an all round suit with high performance from a brand you can trust, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

#2 -  Zoot Men's Ultra Tri Short Sleeve Aero Jersey

Price: £85.00

zoot tri suit mens

Zoot prides itself on innovation, and this might be the most technologically advanced men's tri suit on the list. The unique selling point is the new Aero fabric, which Zoot describes as wind cheating. It’s designed to help you travel faster by reducing wind resistance and drag through the air.

Zoot has gone to great lengths to ensure that this fabric is effective, and the suit has been put through extensive testing in a wind tunnel. By placing the fabric at critical points in the suit, athletes can travel much more efficiently.

This suit excels in other departments, too. It’s made from premium Italian materials with moisture management in mind, so you won’t find yourself drenched in sweat, and it dries off quickly after being lifted out of water. There’s UPF sun protection of 50+, and the fabric helps to moderate your body temperature which is crucial for long distance races.

You won’t have any problems with chafing either, as the suit is skin tight. There are large pockets on the back, perfect for storing energy gels and snacks, and two smaller pockets on the sides. If you need some guidance on choosing the best energy gels then take a look at our article on the 13 best running gels to fuel your triathlons efficiently! The design ensures that these pockets are streamlined, and doesn’t sacrifice aerodynamics. Better still, the suit is designed with some reflective elements, so if you happen to be training at night you’ll always be visible and safe.

Anybody looking for a men's triathlon suit with a difference, and one that really uses science to guarantee optimal performance, need look no further. Zoot's tri suit (men's version) is one of the best you’ll find anywhere.

#3 - Stolen Goat Core Green

Price: £160.00

mens triathlon suit review

The Stolen Goat suit always ranks highly in men's triathlon suit reviews, and for good reason. With its neon green styling, this is certainly one of the more eye-catching suits on our list, and there’s a lot of substance underneath too. It has undergone extensive aerodynamic tests with wind resistance specialists Bioracer, and the results are impressive.

The specially designed ‘Airstripe half-length’ sleeves are capable of saving 8-10 watts each, and over a long distance you’ll certainly feel the difference. Stolen Goat manage to strike a balance between compression and comfort, so the suit feels molded to the skin but it isn’t unduly tight. Leg grippers prevent chafing, but they aren’t so constrictive as to feel unpleasant.

The fabric is lightweight, water-resistant and breathable. It’s also fast-drying and offers UV protection, making this a great all rounder for races in any weather conditions. The Tri Specific Pad is another added bonus. It was developed with triathlon professionals, and offers maximum comfort on the bike, but zero interference off of it. If you're on the lookout for other pieces of equipment to help you in your race, check out OriGym's list of the best running gear here.

With its specially designed sleeves and aerodynamic performance, this is the perfect men's triathlon suit for anybody looking to shave those extra few seconds off their time. We were also big fans of the design, and this suit really stands out amongst the often much more conservative offerings available elsewhere.

#4 - De Soto Forza Flisuit

Price: £261.00

men's two piece tri suit mens review

Another big name brand, Forza has made a tri suit men will love. This might just be the best men's triathlon suit for beginners, as its huge number of aerodynamically designed pockets offer unprecedented levels of storage. There are a total of 5 pockets, and a hidden fly just above the pad, making it easier to quickly head to the bathroom.

The De Soto is a robust suit all round. It offers one of the best levels of UV sun protection on the list, at an impressive 90. This is thanks to the patented De Soto Skin Cooler 90 fabric, which is also breathable, and designed to fit securely against the skin. It’s fantastic for temperature moderation in both hot and cold conditions.

The lower part of the suit is made of compression fabric, and there’s a back panel made out of Liftfoil, another Forza patent. The foil is designed to lift and support your muscles during the race, leading to higher levels of comfort and endurance. There’s even a very welcome “modesty” panel added to the crotch area, to prevent any embarrassing saddle stains.

Start your Fitness Career!

Take your fitness to the next level by becoming a qualified personal trainer with OriGym!

It’s the Skin Cooler fabric which provides the main draw here, and there are a variety of testimonials from medical and sporting professionals on Forza’s website which sing its praises. When the fabric is wet, it can reduce the surface temperature of the skin by an impressive 7 to 10 degrees, which is absolutely essential if you're planning to run a longer, more gruelling triathlon.

If you’re looking for a triathlon suit (men's) that will keep you comfortable in extremes of temperature, this is likely the suit for you.

#5 - Pearl iZumi Men’s Team Octane Suit

Price: £155.32

mens triathlon suit sale

Pearl iZumi is another company that spends a great deal of money on research, and as a result it produces some of the more technologically advanced suits available. The Octane Suit is no different. It was originally designed as part of the company's Speed Shop programme, and was intended to give Pearl sponsored athletes an advantage in competitive races. Nowadays it’s one of the most requested men's triathlon suits in the world.

The main selling point is the Pro Transfer Aero fabric on the sleeves, which smooths out airflow around your shoulders, reducing wind resistance and drag, and therefore saving you watts. Special Speed Sleeve modification reduces wrinkles between your upper arms and torso, saving a few more watts there, too.

It’s the attention to detail that really stands out here. Even the cuffs are laser cut for added comfort, and leg grippers provide just the right combination of compression and comfort. We also loved the collar, which is low, making it perfect for all three parts of the triathlon. There’s ample storage too with four pockets spread around the suit, all easy to access and, of course, expertly streamlined.

It’s no wonder that men's tri suit reviews are full of praise for both company and suit. There are two designs available, and they’re both quite striking. We particularly liked the orange pulse theme, and it’s great to see a men's triathlon suit with half an eye on fashion as well as speed.

#6 - Louis Garneau Aero Tri Suit

Price: £330.90

tri suit mens uk

It’s certainly not the cheapest option on the list, but this might just be the most complete men's triathlon suit that you’ll be able to find. Louis Garneau is well known in the cycling world, but they’ve recently made the move into triathlon equipment, with stunning results. The company's motto is simply 'no compromise', and this shows through every design choice.

This is a premium suit with a premium design. It comes with the latest cutting edge aerodynamics and ergonomics. Its patented SpeedTech fabric underwent rigorous speed tunnel tests, and was found to be the fastest out of over 180 other contenders. Louis Garneau incorporated it into the shoulders and back of the suit for maximum efficiency.

Temperature moderation is key for any triathlete, and the suit takes care of that too. There are ice pockets located over the femoral and iliac arteries, ensuring maximum cooling of the blood vessels. Pockets are expertly designed to be streamlined, spacious, and secure, with a tight elastic seal to prevent the loss of any crucial nutritional snacks. For the best 21 running supplements, read our article for all the information that you need.

We could go on and on about the huge number of exceptional features of this men's tri suit, but it’s likely that whatever you’re looking for in a tri suit the Aero has it, along with masses of other features that won’t even have crossed your mind. This luxury comes at a price, of course, and you might have to wait for a men's triathlon suit sale to try and save a bit of money.

#7 - TYR Men’s Competitor Tri Suit

Price: $109.99 (international shipping)

2 piece tri suit mens

This men's triathlon suit from TYR is specifically designed to increase blood flow to your muscles, thus boosting performance, endurance and speed. This is fundamental, and we were very pleased to find a suit with so many features at such a reasonable price.

Obviously, the blood flow boosting compression will be the biggest draw here. The suit is constructed with special webbing that molds to the muscles and promotes circulation, boosting muscle performance. This makes a huge difference over longer distances, but anybody will be able to feel the benefits even during a shorter triathlon.

The suit comes with some other great features too. It offers UPF 50+ protection from the sun, and the fabric is quick drying. The front locking zipper is huge, and useful if you require some extra ventilation. The built in pad is specially designed to absorb your weight during the cycling phase of a triathlon, ensuring that you feel comfortable and unrestricted.

Throw in a free finish leg grip and you’ve got one of the best suits for first time triathlon runners who want to make sure that every base is covered. Due to the positioning of the zip and grips, this is also one of the easier suits to take on and off, so you won’t have to spend hours grappling with it when you’re already exhausted after a race!

With so many tri suit men's versions available, and some of them in a much higher price bracket, it’s good to know that quality can still be affordable.

#8 - Castrelli Free Sanremo Suit Sleeveless

Price: £189.00

best mens tri suit reviews

There’s a lot to love here, but perhaps the most attention grabbing feature is the anti bacterial saddle pad, which is designed to prevent painful saddle sores. This isn’t surprising from a company renowned for its cycling speciality, but Castrelli has been able to produce a men's tri suit of extraordinary quality, with enough original features to make it stand out from the crowd.

The Sanremo promises all the convenience of a two piece tri suit men's version, but with the comfort of a one piece. There’s certainly plenty of space, with full pockets on the back of the suit, which lie flat during the swimming section of the race. A further two hip pockets give you a little more room for nutrition, and the leg grips provide enough compression without feeling uncomfortable.

We love this well thought-out design. The top section of the suit is made from patented SpeedFreak race fabric, with soft arm holes to reduce any chafing. Velocity mesh has undergone extensive wind tunnel testing to prove how fast it is for the cycling leg. Instadry speed fabric is specially engineered for pace through the water with minimal moisture absorption.

The front of the suit is designed for quick bathroom breaks, and also with ventilation in mind. Castelli developed the Sanremo with Ironman distances in mind, but we’re sure that any athlete will benefit. Castrelli are based in Switzerland, but they ship worldwide, so anyone searching for triathlon suit men's UK delivery will not be left disappointed.

#9 - 2XU Active Trisuit

Price: £85.00

2xu tri suit mens

The 2XU tri suit men's department is famous across the world for its high quality, streamlined designs. The Active Trisuit represents a lower cost alternative to the Compression Suit, which also makes an appearance on this list, but this is a fantastic suit in its own right. With an emphasis on muscle support, durability and airflow, it comes packed with enough features to interest even the most seasoned triathlete.

It’s the highly specialised fabrics which are of real interest here, and they come with a number of benefits. The upper SBR Skin Lite segment is designed with moisture management in mind. It’s water-resistant and dries fast, as well as being extremely breathable. The lower section is all about muscle support. It moves with the body, and stretches with your muscles to ensure that they’re getting all the support they need.

Sensor Mesh X panels increase ventilation, and ensure that sweat and moisture never build up inside the suit. All of this combines to eliminate sweat and water build-up, and ensures that the suit remains cool and breathable even at high temperatures.

Everything has been extensively researched to the highest standard, and 2XU is a trusted name in men's triathlon suits, with a reputation for quality. You can’t go wrong with this suit, and we think it represents a perfect entry point for anybody taking their first steps in the world of triathlon, especially if you’re searching for the best men's tri suit on a slightly lower budget: the Active represents incredible value for money.

#10 - Orca 226 Perform

Price: £129.00

triathlon suit mens uk

If you’ve been reading a lot of men's triathlon suit reviews you’ll already be familiar with the Orca brand. It’s extremely popular, and its suits are known for their high quality.

This is a one piece, sleeveless suit, but don’t be put off by the lack of sleeves. While some sleeveless outfits can cause chafing around the arms, there are no such worries here. The fabric is soft and anti-chafing, and the elegant design will keep you cool during the race.

Somewhat uniquely, this suit uses nanocrystal technology for that cooling effect. The crystals are sewn into the fabric, cooling it down and drawing any excess moisture out. This is a fantastic feature, and it means that you’ll be safe from sweat, and you won’t get weighed down after the swim.

To help keep you even drier, there’s mesh fabric around the pockets in case anything that you’re carrying leaks. The innovative Stretchskin fabric molds to the body, providing an excellent level of targeted compression and muscle support, as well as UPF 50+ protection.

There’s thermo-sealing on the upper suit to prevent chafing, and even the chamois is made from dense Italian fabric for maximum comfort. A lot of attention to detail has gone into this suit, and it’s a strong all rounder, especially if you’re thinking of running a longer distance triathlon, where you’ll benefit much more from the moisture and temperature control features. You may also want to grab some extra running accessories if this is something that you're planning!

If you’re struggling with different sizes from other countries, then you’ll be pleased to know that Orca is UK based, so anyone searching for tri suit men's UK sizes will be able to find exactly what they need.

The fabric is quick drying, and we especially like the mesh panel on the back of the suit. It’s light and breathable, and lets any excess moisture escape easily into the air. This is one of the most comfortable suits you’ll find which is increasingly important if you’re going to be wearing it for a long time. Even the leg grippers manage to strike a balance between compression and comfort.

Everything feels specifically geared towards long distance running in this tri suit. A full length front zip facilitates quick and easy rest stops and can also help with some added ventilation if you need it. Long sleeves are essential for longer distance events, as you’ll want to lower your exposure to the elements.

The fleece lining is one of the suit's best features, functioning as equal part protection for the cycling section, and as a way to quickly wick water away after the swim. Whether you’re getting ready for your first long distance triathlon, or you’re a seasoned pro after a more up to date suit, every design choice has been made with your needs in mind.

#12 - TRI400 Men’s Compression Sleeveless Tri Suit

Price: £110.60

tri suit mens

Anybody searching for a men's tri suit geared slightly more towards swimming will be extremely happy with the TRI400. Its pressure treated fabric has been specifically engineered to help swimmers glide easily through the water, and moisture management technology means shorter drying times. There are even specially placed panels of TRI400 fabric, designed to reduce drag. And if you’re also contemplating buying a swimming tracker, check out our article on the best 15 swimming trackers to find the perfect one for you.

That said, this is much more than just a glorified swimsuit, and you’ll get plenty of benefits from it over the rest of the race. Drawing upon data from 3D body scans, the suit is designed around 400 individual fitting points, which adhere to specific parts of the body and boost compression. This is part of the suit’s Dynamic Gradient Compression system, which aims to increase muscle oxygenation and reduce the build up of lactic acid over long distances.

Anti-friction carbon panels protect the thighs from any chafing, and we loved the feel of the super smooth TRI400 fabric. It molds to the body to present a perfectly streamlined profile, optimised for speed. The foam chamois is impressive too, reducing friction as you pedal. It expands and contracts with your movements, so you’ll never feel uncomfortable.

The odour management system is a nice addition. Fabric is treated with antimicrobial substances, discouraging the bacterial growths which lead to bad smells. There’s 50+ UV protection too, and really very little reason not to give this great suit a try.

With free UK delivery for orders over £100, anyone searching for a triathlon suit (men's) in the UK need look no further.

#13 - Synergy Triathlon Tri Suit

Price: £89.95

mens tri suit mens reviews

Every athlete looks for something different from their suit. Some will search for speed, others will want quick dry fabric or lots of storage space. If comfort tops your list of priorities, then this offering from Synergy is probably the suit for you. It’s absolutely the best men's tri suit for comfort, and it comes with enough additional features to make it one of the best all round performers.

The suit uses a superior Nylon/Spandex blend to create a fabric that offers optimal compression and aerodynamics while remaining incredibly comfortable. Extra large arm holes ensure that you won’t experience any chafing, and there’s even an added modesty panel for extra comfort.

Better still, the fleece is anti-microbial, which inhibits the growth of bacteria and should prevent any build up of unpleasant odours. The 2 pockets are situated on the back of the suit to keep it as streamlined as possible, and there’s ample space to store gels and nutritious snacks.

If that wasn’t enough, the front zipper is adjustable up to 3/4, ensuring maximum comfort and some extra ventilation should you require it. This suit represents an excellent balancing act between comfort and efficiency, and manages to deliver both without sacrifice on either side. A commendable effort indeed.

As this particular suit is readily available from Amazon, you might just be able to get it for a lower price during a men's tri suit sale.

#14 - Anemoi Aero Tri Suit

Price: £124.99

triathlon suit mens

The Anemoi is quite an innovative and forward thinking brand. In an attempt to revolutionise the tri suit industry, HUUB brought in Dan Bigham, an aerodynamic performance engineer fresh from Mercedes-AMG. A cyclist and triathlete himself, Dan worked with HUUB to try and better understand the fundamental principles of speed, efficiency and endurance, and the results are spectacular.

HUUB claims that the Anemoi is the fastest men's tri suit on the market, capable of shaving an impressive 6 to 7 minutes off your time in an Ironman distance race. Looking at the evidence it’s hard to argue with them. This is probably the most advanced men's triathlon suit you’ll find, and the work that went into the project has paid dividends.

There are almost too many features to list, and the suit comes with an incredible array of unique, patented additions. Arms Neutral makes swimming more comfortable and efficient by reducing your usual stretch cycle by up to 50%. Neoprene Trip Technology streamlines every movement and saves you time.

Even the basics are done well. Longer arms and legs streamline your contours, and there’s a spacious rear pocket, itself designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind. While these features and the promise of faster times will probably appeal to triathlon veterans the most, we think that anybody regardless of their level will love these suits, which genuinely feel like the future of the sport.

HUUB is quick to point out that this suit isn’t the end. It’s just the first stepping stone on their journey to designing the ultimate triathlon suit, and we can’t wait to see where that journey takes them.

#15 - BlueSeventy TX2000

Price: £155.00

triathlon suit mens reviews

The TX2000 underwent a lengthy testing phase, as it was put through its paces for over a year by professional and amateur athletes over a variety of distances. Now, the suit is particularly popular with those running long distance or even Ironman triathlons who need durable suits that don’t chafe and keep the elements at bay.

This might well be the best men's core long course tri suit in its price bracket, and it comes with several features that make it absolutely perfect for longer distances. Its long sleeves provide additional protection from the elements, and the design is geared towards maximum flexibility, especially of the arms during the swim.

It’s praised for its efficient heat transference properties, which will help to keep you cool on even the most gruelling course. Special Carvico VITA fabric with coldblack moderates body temperature and helps keep the heat of the sun at bay. With two spacious back pockets to store everything you need on a long distance track, there's no wonder why it's favoured by Ironman around the world.

We loved the Berenis chamois, which is light enough so that you don’t even notice it during the run, but provides excellent support during the cycle section of the race. Blue Seventy is primarily a developer of wetsuits, but they’ve really struck gold with the TX2000, and developed possibly the best men's tri suit for long distances.

That said, we can heartily recommend this suit to anybody, regardless of the distances they plan to take on. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and the VITA fabric will keep you wonderfully cool as you race.

#16 - Funky Skull Speedsuit

Price: £135.00

mens core long course tri suit

If you’re on the lookout for a men's triathlon suit that’s a little different, and you want to stand out from the crowd, then look no further than the Funky Skull Speedsuit. Funky Skull has a reputation for making stylish and attention grabbing sportswear, and this suit is no different. With its vivid colours, striking lines and eye catching logo (a multicoloured skull wearing sunglasses), you’re certain to make a statement.

Of course, a men's tri suit must be much more than just good looking, and there’s plenty of substance beneath the stylish exterior. The elastane suit is aerodynamically streamlined, with the two pockets placed on the back to lower drag. These pockets are nice and spacious, so you’ll certainly be able to fit a few gels in there.

Interior flatlock seams make the suit comfortable to wear even on longer triathlons, and we loved the full length zipper on the front. Unlike some of the other 3/4 length zips, this is extra convenient for quick bathroom stops, or if you need a little added ventilation. The pad is double density too, so it’ll see you through even the most punishing Ironman triathlon.

This suit is an excellent all round performer, and Funky Skull is a brand you can trust. They won the prestigious ‘Tri-suit Brand of the Year’ from 220triathalon back in 2018, and they’ve continued to go from strength to strength since.

The iconic design is probably the biggest draw here, but the Funky Skull Speedsuit is fantastic in its own right. It might just be the best men's tri suit in this more affordable price bracket.

#17 - dhb Blok Vesuvio

Price: £75.00

two piece tri suit mens

One piece tri suits might be the more popular choice at the moment, but there are still a lot of advantages to be found with the classic two piece. They’re more comfortable, and they don’t hold the heat like a one piece often does. They usually have more storage too, and make bathroom breaks much easier.

If you’re searching for a modern and well designed men's two piece tri suit, then you can’t go far wrong with the dhb Blok Vesuvio. It’s somewhat of a classic, but it’s been updated wonderfully, and we absolutely love the striking design.

The fabric on top is lightweight, so it’s breathable and will help keep you cool. It’s also quick drying and moisture resistant, and holds a 50+ UPF rating. Interestingly, it’s also sunscreen and chlorine resistant, features rarely seen in some of the much more expensive suits. Two back pockets complete the top, so you’ll never be short of space.

The shorts offer all the same benefits, as well as compression to aid circulation and a chamois designed specifically for triathlons. Comfortable silicone grippers are a nice addition, and this is definitely some of the most comfortable racing gear that you’ll find.

While a two piece tri suit in men's fitting might not be as popular as they once were, with innovation shifting towards the more aerodynamically effective one piece, but that doesn’t mean that you should forget about them altogether. The Vesuvio proves that a two piece can be comfortable while still retaining many of the benefits of its more streamlined cousin.

How to choose a men's tri suit?

tri suit mens image

There are a lot of important considerations that you should make before committing to a triathlon suit.

  • The fabric and design: is it lightweight, waterproof or water-resistant, fully zipped or partially zipped (for ventilation), is it aerodynamic and streamlined, temperature regulating, does it have pockets and where are the pockets situated, long sleeved, short sleeved, or sleeveless?
  • The built-in pad: is it comfortable, anti-microbial, anti-chafe, does it provide enough support?
  • Any added features: UPF protection, added vents, compression sections, eye-catching design?

Ultimately, there will be factors that you feel are completely necessary in a men’s tri suit and others that won’t be as important. Our advice would be to first decide if you prefer a one or two piece and then go from there as this will reduce your initial options and make the further search a lot easier.

What is the best men's tri suit?

Obviously deciding on the best men’s tri suit is very subjective as you might feel that other suits are better and for different reasons. With so many features, materials, prices, and designs to choose from it’s a very difficult question to answer and you shouldn’t take our opinion as the only answer! We have done plenty of research and we know a thing or two about triathlons, but you should check out each of the men’s triathlon suits for yourself too.

One of the best men’s tri suits on this list for us has to be the HUUB Anemoi Aero Tri Suit. This tri suit has all the features and structure you would need for a challenging triathlon, including: lightweight and breathable fabric with Neoprene Trip technology for increased aerodynamics, a spacious rear pocket for all your energy gel needs, Arms Neutral innovation for easier swimming, and the overall capacity to knock 6 minutes of your final time.

The input from Mercedes-AMG performance engineer Dan Bigham has clearly paid off and makes this a product that is definitely worth investing in.

Before you go!

With so many factors to consider when purchasing the right men's tri suit for you it can seem like a daunting and time consuming task. Hopefully we’ve taken most of the stress out of the process, and you’ve found the right one for your next triathlon challenge.

Be sure to check the measurements, and remember that some brands recommend going up a size to ensure the fit isn’t too snug!

What Are The Benefits Of A Triathlon Suit Compared To A Wetsuit?

You may be asking why do you need a triathlon suit.

If you ask professional and high-end triathletes, their answer would be because tri-suit offers an all-purpose gear that can be worn right before the race up to the post-race cool down.

And compared to a wetsuit, which you can use only during the swimming part of the trial, it has a lot of benefits. Check our full guide to learn more.

With majority of races set outside in the rough environment, a tri-suit should be one of your first investments. Though some triathletes would not require wearing one, tri-suits are designed to assist and help you race faster while providing utmost comfort.

Transition speed

For triathletes, nailing the transition time in just a few vital seconds is an important aspect of the race. The transition phase is often looked upon as the fourth ‘element’ to a triathlon, and is equally important as its accompanying three sections. Wearing a tri-suit will substantially speed up that transition time, and could even be the difference between first and second place.

Quick Drying

Most good tri-suits are designed so that they can dry off as quickly as possible. This is for two reasons: 1. So that you’re comfortable during the next part of the event after the swim and 2. So you can move faster. When the suit is dryer, it is lighter and therefore you move faster.

Our friend Taren explains in this video the common types of clothings used on tri-races including their importance, benefits, and some disadvantages. Lear what fits you best. Check it out!

How do I know that a tri-suit is high quality?
A quality tri-suit improves your overall racing performance while providing comfort during a race. It is like a second layer of skin, which fits well underneath your wetsuit or as your sole gear in the water.

It is also quick-drying and should not chafe by the time you are on the bike or on the run. Most importantly, when you are on a tri-suit, adding or subtracting clothing during the transition is not anymore necessary, allowing you to move to the next leg as quickly as possible.

The downside of triathlon suits
Triathlon suits can be expensive, and honestly, most triathletes can do triathlons without wearing one. Also, some would prefer clothing that they could wear during workouts, and a tri-suit is considered a one-purpose garment only.

Given that tri-suits are expensive, you should not train in them for regular periods. Use it for few training sessions to make sure you know how it feels wearing it during the race day. Of course, you can train in whatever clothing that feels comfortable and fits well.

Types of Tri Suits: One Piece and Two Piece
There are two types of trisuits to pick from: one-piece and two-piece. They offer different quality of comfort for different parts of the race. You can check it in detail in our one piece vs two piece suit comparison article.

There are many things to consider when picking your new tri-suit. Take a look at the advantages tri-suits can offer and what specifically to look for in each brand or model:

There are so many options out there on the market that sometimes it can become overwhelming to know where to start. How do you know if a certain one is better than another? You will need to start by comparing the basic functions of each tri-suit – like how it fits, its materials, its ventilation ability, its design, and its zipper access. Here’s what you should know:

It will be especially important that the fit is close-fitting without being too restrictive. Being close-fitting is what you need to make the suit as aerodynamic as possible. Excess material that hangs away from your body will slow you down.

Your tri-suit needs to be comfortable enough to bend in, but tight enough that it conforms well to your body shape. Definitely try on several different suits before settling for one, this way you will get a good idea of what feels best for you.

Although you may think that a nice smooth tri-suit is going to be the best option in terms of aero and hydrodynamics, you actually would be wrong. Actually, a smooth fabric will allow both air and water to attach to the suit at a molecular level.

Instead, a tri-suit that is designed with a more textured, or rougher, edge encourages the air and water to flow and glide smoothly over the surface without getting ‘stuck’ in the fabric.

It’s a good idea to look for a suit that provides a good amount of breathability and ventilation, as no doubt you produce a good amount of sweat and moisture during the event. One with a mesh design or ventilation airflow design namely under the armpits, on the back and sometimes even on the hips, will allow the suit to wick away moisture and keep you as cool as possible during the course of the triathlon.

Although sleeveless tri-suits have been a very popular choice over the years, suits with arms have now become an even more popular purchase by triathletes. When purchasing a short sleeved one, it is important to understand that the sleeves must be comfortable, yet tight fitting, as well as flexible.

As long as the tri-suit you chose is the correct fit for your body physique, then a sleeved suit will provide you with an aerodynamic and comfortable race.

Zipper Access

The placement of the zipper varies between suits, with some having the zipper down the front of the suit, whilst others see the zipper running down the back of the suit. A front zipper will allow for easier access to ventilation should you need it, but you may prefer a tri-suit with a back zipper if you are looking to get every single bit of aerodynamic power that you can.

However, you need to be careful, as it can often be easy to get the back zipper mixed up with the zipper on your wetsuit. The last thing you need to want during the transition is to accidentally rip off both suits whilst in a hurry!

This part of the tri-suit is equally as important as the rest, but sometimes it can be the most difficult to element to get right. The padding can’t be as thick as it appears in cycling shorts, because then you will have too much added weight due to more water absorption when it comes to the run.

But, it still needs to provide enough support and saddle separation to make your cycle as comfortable as possible.

Now you are aware of what elements to look out for when purchasing a new suit, let’s find you the perfect one for you! Check out our top 5 tri-suits and why each one is pretty great.

Core support. According to an article published by, a strong core is key to having a strong triathlon. When choosing a tri-suit, go for the one that is tighter than loose.

It is a given fact that some suits will stretch over time. The best tri-suits are designed with compression around the core and hips while you are in the swim. They support the engagement of your core and thus increasing hip drive and reduce fatigue over the course of the swim.

Hydrodynamics. Most would believe that super smooth fabrics are more hydrodynamic, but the fact is, slightly rough surfaces are. According to Guy Jones, a two-time Australian age-group champion and triathlon coach, a smooth fabric creates a turbulent or rough flow thus increasing the drag while textured fabrics promote a very thin layer of turbulent flow over the surface.

Cycling or Biking

Quick-drying. Coming out fresh from the swim, you wouldn’t want a suit that is wet and carrying the extra weight of the water. When this is the case, your range of motion is restricted requiring more effort to turn the pedals.

A low-quality and poorly fitted suit usually absorb more water which merely means that you will carry the extra weight further. A good quality suit has hydrophobic properties which creates a wicking action. This is the process where the moisture moves away from your skin allowing it to evaporate. Most high-quality tri-suits are made of fabrics with higher beading properties for faster drying.

Aerodynamics. Aerodynamics are not just contributed by the expensive wheels you are driving. Today, speed is improved by enhancing the aerodynamics of tri-clothings. Also, loose fabric and minimizing the seams are another drag contributor.

Comfort. One of the most important parts to consider on a tri-suit is the pad or chamois. The chamois should not be thick as it adds on the bulk on the run, but the pad should provide enough support and separation from the saddle.

Different types of chamois are made from a thick-floaty-pull-light pad or thin polyester fleece. Some expert athletes racing on very long distances wear a tri-clothing without chamois at all. Eventually, you will find out if you need one or not, but many manufacturers have the option to create tri-suits with lighter pads to minimize water absorption and irritation.

Support and compression. A good quality tri-suit with compression positioned in appropriate areas will not just provide core support, but it will also improve your running performance, reduce possible muscle damage, delay muscle fatigue, and produce maximum muscle output.

Ease of transition. For shorter distance and some long distance races, triathletes consider having a two-piece tri-suit for easier bladder breaks. One-piece tri-suits are usually worn for longer distance races.

Chafing. Chafing or the irritation caused by repetitive friction can be caused by fitting, body shape, temperature, and moisture. A quality tri-suit do not just fit perfectly an individual, but it must be capable of wicking moisture from the skin.

Temperature Regulation. Regulating temperature is key during racing, so it’s best to consider tri-suits with zippers and the type of fabric. Zippers are usually located at the back for improved aerodynamics or in front for added comfort. Like we mentioned above, the fabric should be hydrophobic and able to draw off moisture to maintain optimal body temperature.

Pockets. Tri-suits with pockets are common in long course races where you need to stuff energy bars or gels. You should avoid large pockets as these create drag. For very long races, triathletes wear nutrition or race belt with loops.

10. De Soto Forza ITU

If you’re a triathlon enthusiast, then this is a great suit for you. This is also ideal for those who plan to join their first triathlon but have no idea which suit to use. The Nuckily Triathlon Suit has all that you need to keep you in your element while you compete.

They used highly-breathable materials in this suit. You don’t have to worry about getting too hot while competing. The said materials are also fast wicking and quick drying. This means that once you get out of the water and into your bike, you’re ready to pedal away. This triathlon suit gets rid of extra weight due to moisture in a matter of minutes.

I love the trendy design and perfect fit of this suit. Functionality is the most important factor when selecting a suit. But if you can get one that is functional but comfortable and trendy then why not have them both?

Just be mindful of the size when you order one. The sizes are based on an Asian size standard so you might need to get one that is larger by a size or two. There are also reported delays in the delivery of the item. So, don’t order this item if you need to use it in a few days.

Bottom line, we are choosing the Synergy Men’s Triathlon Suit for this roundup over the Castelli Men’s Free Tri-Suit though the race is too close. The only downside of the Synergy tri-suit is the reported front zipper that can chafe.

We still believe that this boils down to the individual fitting. But overall, we are impressed with the Synergy’s flexibility in its category. Most likely, there’s improved speed and aerodynamics thereby increasing your triathlon finish times.

The simplicity of not changing throughout the entire duration of the race is a plus. Besides, using only one gear saves time, especially during transitions. But you have to keep in mind that the tri-suit should be quick-drying to ensure that you are not in a tight, wet, clingy situation.

Aside from that, consider if you need a tri-suit that has chamois for extra comfort along the road. This is very important on long-distance and Olympic-distance races.

On top of it, if you are interested in making a custom tri suit, here a complete guide talking about creating a custom tri suit for yourself of your partner.

Lastly, remember that when choosing a tri-suit, it’s best to try the tri-clothing before making that purchase. Inspect every element we discussed above so that by the time you are on race day, all you have to do is to eye on that finish line.

1. ROKA Elite Gen II Aero Triathlon Suit – Best Tri Suit for Beginners

Roka Elite Aero II Tri Suit Review

ROKA designed their Elite Aero trisuit at the crossroad where function, aerodynamics, and comfort meet, no matter what distance you race.

The trisuit is versatile and fits all sizes of triathletes and even has “tall” sizes available.

Upgraded from its older model, this one has no-sew premium knit fabric to make those “sausage” legs disappear while retaining its high compression rate.

Additionally, the elastic interface, low profile foam chamois is nearly seamless, moves with you, and avoids the uncomfortable feeling.

The front of the suit features:

  • An aerodynamic sleeve with minimized seam construction so your arms won’t look like hotdogs.
  • The top-line YKK breakaway zipper for flexibility during the swim, easier bathroom breaks for a long race.
  • The front panel is made with Premium Schoeller Eschler carbon to help regulate your outside body temperature.
  • The legs have a “clean” compression with silicone print to get rid of the “sausage leg” effect.

The back of the suit features:

  • An aerodynamic mesh panel to reduce seams and help regulate your body temperature. ROKA’s Aero Mesh + Coldback materials help keeps you cool on hot race days.
  • Two pockets to hold your nutrition on the bike and run.
  • Elastic interface and low-profile density chamois moves with you without compromising comfort for your longer races.
  • Silicone printing on the leg openings so your legs won’t look like sausages. More practically, the silicone prevents the fabric from riding up as you transition from one leg of the race to the other.

On land, the trisuit should slip on and feel as though you’re in a swimming technical suit with a little bit of padding for the bike.

During a race or practice, the suit should move with you and seamlessly transition with you as you go from swimming to biking to running. All while giving you support where you need it and keeping you aerodynamic on the bike.

I recommend this trisuit to those triathletes who need a piece that they don’t need to worry about. The suit can be your best trick for race days. Just put it on and it will move with you for the rest of the race.

2. De Soto Sport Forza Flisuit – Best Performing Tri Suit

De Soto Forza Flisuit Reviews

Though De Soto Sport may not be the oldest company we came across, it’s founding 2 ½ decades ago does coincide with the upswing in manufacturers getting serious about producing triathlon gear that was specially tailored towards the specific needs and challenges that an athlete faces during a triathlon race as opposed to some other type of competition. De Soto Sport was and still is definitely a big part of that shift in market approach and the Forza Trisuit is a prime example of this philosophy in action. As such, it should come as little surprise that we rated the De Soto Sport Forza Trisuit our Editor’s Choice Best Performing men’s tri suit.

One of the biggest changes made to triathlon gear since the sport began to have access to specialized products is that the materials will differ from section to section with the explicit purpose of providing the desired benefit that is either more applicable in that part of the suit or fills a need in otherwise unused panels. In this regard, the De Soto Sport Forza goes above and beyond in its quest to provide the most advanced and effective men’s tri suit. For instance, the bulk of the tri suit is made out of a nylon and lycra blend, which is a fairly common material blend to use in a tri suit. However, the De Soto Sport Forza also makes exceptions for certain compression panels as well as some of the ventilation panels. This choice alone provides a wide variety of benefits.

Of course, using high-quality materials is only half of what makes a great men’s tri suit or not, especially since the subtle changes to a tri suit’s design can have a significant impact in how the tri suit actually performs in the field. One of the best design features that the De Soto Sport Forza included was the use of a design that provides UVB 90 protection which is the most protection from the sun that we saw. On top of that, while the De Soto Sport Forza is not actually intended to be used in substitute of a wetsuit, it does come with Liftfoil buoyancy panels to provide additional assistance during the swim leg of the triathlon. If you are a racer that carries a lot of consumable or backup gear, the De Soto Sport Forza also comes with the most pockets out of any tri suit we reviewed with 5 in total.

The HUUB DS Long Course was designed with the help of Ironman Dave Scott, who is a six-time world champion. It was created with aerodynamics, comfort, and breathability for long course races.

Compared to the previous HUUB DS long course tri suits, this one is more aerodynamic. But doesn’t compromise the comfort and breathability.

The tri suit is made with the most current Italian fabrics, which are very soft. It also wicks away moisture quickly so that salt crystals won’t appear on your suit. And, after the swim, you’ll feel dry on the bike and won’t get chilly from head or cross winds.

The suit has mesh panels and the sides and back for breathability and it lets air escape. Huub’s Coldblack technology helps regulate your body temperature. This would help as you transition disciplines and keep you feeling strong over the course of a six or twelve-hour race. This technology also ensures that you get at least 30 UPF protection no matter what color you order your suit in.

And finally, for safety, the fabric is heat-reflective so you won’t get overheated during your race.

How is this suit “fast”?

Compared to older versions, this one has aerodynamic sleeves and rear nutrition pockets.

The chamois was specifically made for long-distance triathletes. And the chamois doesn’t get in the way of your movement on the bike. The suit and chamois allow for an open hip position, which is more comfortable and efficient for long rides in the saddle.

I recommend this suit to anyone who wants one that will keep them cool and comfortable during a long race. And, if you need a suit that doesn’t restrain your leg and hip movement throughout the race.

4. 2XU Compression Full Zip Tri Suit

2xu Compression Full Tri Suit Review

The 2XU Compression tri suit is made for those who want to go the distance and need support where it’s needed and comfort when they feel fatigued. The compressive materials will help the body’s recovery and may reduce the build of lactic acid.

Although this is a full-body compression suit, it does have breathability. It wasn’t easy to do this without compromising the compressive materials. But, 2XU figured it out. For one, the suit has UV blocking materials integrated with its compressive materials. This keeps your skin protected and lets your body breathe as it completes the race. Secondly, the suit was finished with a filament polyester coating, which is supposed to lower your body’s temperature while exercising.

If it’s raining or you’re sweating a lot the suit has moisture-wicking technology that will prevent pools of moisture from accumulating.

Some may ask: Is this suit comfortable to wear?

Triathletes who have bought the suit swear that it is comfortable to wear and helps prevent injuries and muscle fatigue. The suit also has some Lycra Spandex, elastane, and high filament polyester, which feel comfortable to wear and move in.

You can look at the comfort of the suit as both preventative for post-workout with the benefits it provides during the workouts. For example, as discussed earlier, the suit protects your skin from UVA sun rays. This would help your comfort both during and after the workout out.

The suit is extremely durable and triathletes who have bought it have used it for several years before they need to buy a new one.

I highly recommend this to any triathlete who wants a compressive tri suit and wants to recover between races faster.

5. Zoot LTD Aero Tri Suit

Zoot Aero Triathlon Suit Review

The Zoot tri suit is made so that you feel comfortable on race day. You’ve already done all the work and now all you need to do is rely on your purposeful workouts and coaching sessions to get to the finish line.

The tri suit is made with aero cut sleeves to keep you aerodynamic on the bike and the Italian fabric wicks away the moisture to keep you comfortable and dry. And, finally, the SBR 2D pad gives you support where you need it and comfort in other places.

The tri suit has a vento 4-way stretch mesh that gives your body room to breathe and move during the race. And, it’s one of the “tricks” to help wick away moisture from the tri suit.

The Cam Lock Zipper lets you vent the tri suit on really warm race days so you can stay comfortable and cool through the whole race. And, if you feel as though the suit is too compressive the zipper helps relieve some “panic” you might feel.

Like the Kiwawi, this suit also has many options to store your nutrition and energy bars and gels. All of this is quickly accessed and is useful if you have limited room on your bike. And, there is even a bigger pocket to put a sponge or ice pack there for really warm races.

The seam line stitch construction and carbon tri-chamois are designed to lie right next to your skin. This ensures that your suit won’t bunch or chafe your skin.

The leg gripper is made from Italian materials which keep it breathable with a secure compression that will keep the shorts from riding up during your ride.

For sizing, it’s always a good idea to put comfort before aerodynamics. You definitely don’t want to end up with a suit that is too constrictive or makes you feel as though you can’t breathe when you get nervous. So it’s best to size up if you don’t want a very tight suit or if you’re between sizes, just go ahead and size up.

Triathletes who have bought this suit like it because it is compressive and has pockets for all their nutrition and even an ice pack. The sizing is easier to navigate compared to other brands. Most have had success when buying online. Although, most will order two sizes and send back the one that doesn’t fit.

I highly recommend this tri suit to those who regularly race sprint and olympic-distance races. This suit will let your body move freely and provide support to your muscles to get through the final stretches. And, the compressive material will help your muscles recover such as hamstrings and quadriceps.

6. Zoot Men’s Ultra Short Sleeve Aero Triathlon Suit

Zoot Ultra Aero Triathlon Racesuit Review

Zoot Men’s Ultra Short Sleeve Aero triathlon suit is making new waves in the triathlon community.

And it well deserves the on-looking.

Zoot designed the suit with Carbon fabric in its Ultra Short Sleeve Aero Triathlon Race suit to help you stay aerodynamic in the water.

The carbon material also helps reduce heat on your body during the triathlon and even help regulate your outside body temperature.

This trisuit truly has one of the most sophisticated designs out there.

To add to the suit’s uniqueness the chamois provides comfort without the drag during your bike and run portion of the triathlon.

Additionally, the trisuit helps you stay cool and healthy during the summer with its UPF 50+ level of sun protection.

On a practical level, the suit also provides four pockets for nutrition on the bike and run if you start running low on energy.

Only found with this trisuit, its Italian gripper gives you a comfortable yet compressive feel and fits on your legs. This might help you retain your energy and comfort during the bike portion of the race.

The Italian gripper also has a reflective strip on the arm, which helps you stay visible during your practice rides and the compressive material hugs your bicep perfectly.

Worried about chafing?

Zoot uses SeamLink stitching so that there’s little to no movement and minimizes chafing while giving your legs flexibility.

On land, the suit should feel like a glove and move with you, but still feel supportive.

During a triathlon, the suit might help your muscles and energy level stay fresh from one leg to the other. You might be able to perform even better with a super light yet supportive trisuit.

Overall, I’d highly recommend this product to triathletes who are in their third or fourth season or those who want to be more competitive in the sport. It’s a big investment to buy a trisuit with carbon material. While it will last you a long time, you want to be sure you’re going to get the most out of it!
It’s not exclusively for serious triathletes, but that’s whom I’d recommend it for.

7. Castelli Free Sanremo Trisuit

Castelli Free Sanremo short sleeve trisuit Review

The Castelli Free Sanremo short sleeve trisuit is a good choice if you’re trying to improve your time and performance on the bike.

The designers made this trisuit so that you’ll fly through the course with comfort. The suit allows you and your body to breathe and also be aerodynamic.

To make this suit one of the best, the hydrophobic SpeedFreak material keeps the suit from dragging in the water and has minimal water absorption.

Although the sleeves come down to your elbows, there is elastic in the shoulders to help you swim naturally. During the bike, the elbow-length sleeves will help you stay aerodynamic.

Castelli’s Kiss Tri feature, designed the seat pad so that it is comfortable on the bike, but won’t be noticed during the run and swim.

If you’re worried about the zipper or the suit slipping, Castelli designed the suit with the highly rated YKK Camlock zipper and Giro Air elastics to keep the trisuit in place around your legs.

The suit should fit very tightly so you won’t have to worry about any wardrobe mishaps, but with enough comfort and flexibility so that you can move naturally and not cramp up.

During a triathlon, the suit should feel comfortable and let you perform your best for that day. If you feel like the suit is dragging, you might need a smaller size or go with a different brand and model.

If you’re doing a long-distance triathlon, the trisuit has two hip pockets and two hydro and aero-optimized pockets, where you can store nutrition. And, patented by Castelli’s Sanremo innovation, the front design allows for easy bathroom breaks.

Overall, I’d recommend this trisuit to those who are training and regularly competing in an olympic distance and Ironman triathlons. The sleeves will help keep you safe from the sun if you’re sensitive to the sun and the easy bathroom access will save you time.

8. Louis Garneau Pro Carbon Triathlon Suit

Louis Garneau Pro Carbon Triathlon Suit Reviews

The Louis Garneau Pro Carbon triathlon sleeve-less triathlon suit will match its comfort and performance with its many features.

The suit comes with five different materials all specialized to help different parts of your body for comfort and performance.
• The CB Carb Slick is a moisture-wicking material that not only helps you dry off faster, but also might help prevent bacterial infections or chafing.
• The Light Power is also a moisture-wicking material with the added compressive material, which might help you be more aerodynamic in the water and on the bike.
• The Carbon-X Mesh is also a compressive material with the breathability feature, which might help you move more naturally.
• The Tri-Rev material is both a supportive and compressive material.
• The Pro + Lycra Fiber is a support material that might help your body recover from one leg of the triathlon to the other.

The trisuit also was designed with different features that will not only help with your overall performance but also comfort during and possibly after the triathlon.

Louis Garneau’s Coldblack upper body feature helps reflect the sun’s rays during the bike and run portion of the triathlon. You might walk away from the competition with one less sunburn, even if you’re wearing dark clothing.

Louis Garneau designed the shoulder area with its Laser-cut design, which might help you stay more aerodynamic in the water and give you more arm movement.

Louis Garneau also remembered to design the suit so that minimal chafing occurred with its Micro-Activ and Flatlock seams.

On land, the suit should fit your body very snug without constricting your movement. You should be able to “easily” get a wetsuit on before the start of the race.

During a competition, the suit should help you feel comfortable during each leg of the race and support your muscles as you transition from one discipline to the other.

I’d recommend this trisuit to beginner level triathletes who want a suit to help them become stronger triathletes. I’d also suggest triathletes who race once or twice a summer to use this suit. Once you become more invested in the sport, I’d recommend “upgrading” to a different tri suit. By then, you’ll know yourself better and what you need during a race.

9. Pearl iZumi Elite Triathlon Speed Suit

Pearl Izumi Elite Triathlon Speed Suit Review

Pearl iZumi designed its Elite Triathlon Speed Suit as a one-piece short-sleeved piece to uphold windy days on the road and win over the competition.

The newest version comes with the newest aerodynamic fabrics to help you breeze through the bike portion of the triathlon.

Similar to other trisuits, Pearl iZumi provides its suits with UPF 50+ sun protection so you have one less thing to worry about on race day.

This trisuit features:

  • Elite Transfer In-R-Cool material helps keep you cool during a sunny bike and run and even had reflective technology to help keep your body sunburn free.
  • Elite Transfer In-R-Cool material also has lyrca that helps the trisuit retain its compressive material. This might save you money on buying new trisuits.
  • Elite Transfer Aero fabric is placed in all the right spots to make you the most aerodynamic in the pack.
  • Merrow stitching helps keep the trisuit close to the body which would help reduce chafing or have no chafing problems at all.
  • The Chamois pad that dries quickly from the swim, provides comfort on the bike, and “disappears” on the run.

On land, the trisuit should be easy to get on and off and let you have natural movement, no matter what discipline you’re training for that day.

During a race, the trisuit should be a supportive piece that is barely noticeable.

I’d recommend this trisuit to beginner to mid-level triathletes. This is a suit that you can rely on for a couple season either in competition on for a ride in the summer evenings or an open water practice.
Pearl iZumi is a reputable brand that would be a great option if you’re looking to get the most out of your dollar.

10. Synergy Tri Suit – Best Budget Tri Suit

Synergy Tri Suit Review

When you are looking for a company that makes triathlon gear and equipment, there are few whose background reads off like a veritable wishlist than Synergy’s. For one, this brand was founded right around the time that triathlon equipment and gear was beginning to be taken seriously as its own niche, and Synergy has been pushing the boundaries of the market ever since. Of course, this makes perfect sense when you consider that not only does this brand specialize exclusively in triathlon gear and equipment, it has been repurposed as a high-end brand for over a decade.

One of the biggest things that the Synergy Triathlon Tri Suit tried to get right was understanding that, as a type of long-distance endurance race, it is vitally important for everything about your experience to be as comfortable as can be expected considering the circumstances. For instance, while this is certainly not the only men’s tri suit we saw that was sleeveless or featured a large neck opening, it has certainly paid more attention to how they affect your comfort than most of their competitors with molded, non-chafing openings and liners. On top of that, the tri chamois is made of NeoGel with the explicit purpose of not only feeling light during the run and swim but to provide additional support during the biking leg.

Beyond the comfort of the tri suit, Synergy also understands that with as difficult as a triathlon is on its own, there is no need for the tri suit to increase that difficulty in any way. As such, this tri suit has a woven anti-microbial fleece to prevent any hygiene issues when transferring from one leg of the triathlon to another. On top of that, the Synergy Triathlon Tri Suit comes with aqua panels that are designed to provide a touch of buoyancy during the swim leg of the race. If you need additional ventilation, the tri suit’s ¾ zipper closure allows you to open it partly without issue. Finally, the Synergy Triathlon Tri Suit comes with 2 pockets to carry any odd piece of equipment or refueling you may wish to keep on your person.

11. SLS3 Mens Triathlon Tri Suit CMX

SLS3 Tri Suit Review

Like many of the other brands on our list, SLS3 is a brand that specializes explicitly in equipment and gear for triathletes. That said, SLS3 is a bit of a latecomer when considering it has only been in existence for a little under 2 decades. The thing that gives SLS3 a bit of an edge is that the founders themselves are triathletes, so not only does the brand put all of its focus into triathlon equipment, the company’s entire raison d’etre is driven by direct experience with the product. The fact that SLS3 can also achieve this while still being one of the least expensive brands on the market is only icing on the cake.

When talking about legs in regard to the SLS3 CMX tri suit, we are not necessarily referring to the anatomical openings of the tri suit though those do have qualities worth mentioning. Instead, legs in this context are meant to refer to the different legs of the race that the SLS3 CMX can assist or otherwise perform well during. This tri suit ultimately allows you to wear a single suit for every leg of the race, which is a huge advantage if you are not already doing this considering you do not have to worry about changing gear for different legs of the race. That said, this tri suit does have a tendency to run thin compared to others, so it is likely not the best tri suit to wear in a colder race.

Beyond the fact that this tri suit was designed to be worn during every leg of the race, it also checks all of the expected boxes from a competition-worthy tri suit. One example of this is the material composition which uses a nylon and lycra blend, though the back of the tri suit is woven into a mesh material to provide additional ventilation during the running and biking legs of the triathlon. If you need more ventilation, the SLS3 CMX tri suit features a ¾ zipper closure giving you the ability to open the tri suit during the appropriate legs of the race. If you are of the mind to carry various resources with you while you race, the SLS3 CMX also comes with 4 pockets, which is more than most others provide.

Best Triathlon Suit for Women

1. TYR Women’s Competitor Triathlon Suit

TYR Women's Competitor Tri Suit Review

The TYR Competitor Triathlon suit has graduated compression for the best fit along with circulation and muscle performance. All to help you perform your best throughout the entire triathlon.

Are you looking for a suit that will give you a little more edge?

TYR might be your brand.

While this featured suit is its Competitor model, for a compressive fit, it also offers the same suit with carbon materials for an extremely tight fit.

TYR’s Competitor trisuit features:

  • Competitor Mesh that is soft on your skin while allowing you full body movement. It’s also a breathable material to help keep you cool.
  • Competitor Women’s AMP Pad is one of the most advanced technologies for trisuits. The triple density foam helps absorb weight while you’re in aero.
  • Competitor Woven is an ultra-lite, high-stretch, fast drying, and protects you from UPF 50+ rays. This material would help you move more freely and keep you safe on a sunny race day.
  • Compression Web material is designed to help your muscles stay fresh as possible throughout the whole race. If you have problems with blood flow and circulation, and muscle vibration, then the suit might alleviate those problems. All while you race in a sleek trisuit.
  • Flip Lock and Zipper is placed in the front for easy access for those race bathroom breaks and locks into position when you need it closed and secure.
  • Pocket Storage is perfectly placed on the trisuit for easy access if you need nutrition for either the bike or run leg of the triathlon.
  • Free Finish Leg Gripper feature is designed to reduce leg restrictions and acts as an anti-slip.
TYR Women's Competitor Tri Suit Reviews

On land, you should be able to get the suit on with little to no help and feel snug on your body.

During a race, you should feel as though the trisuit is a supportive second skin.

I’d recommend this trisuit to beginner triathletes or those who do not race very often. It’s great as a “starter” trisuit, but I’d suggest getting something more durable if you become more serious about the sport or have the means to race often.

2. Zone3 Women’s Activate Plus Trisuit

Zone3 Women’s Activate Plus Trisuit Review

Zone3 created their Activate trisuit with the intention to be a staple for your triathlon arsenal.
Based on first impressions, the trisuit is stylish, supportive, and breathable. The suit even has a built-in bra for those who need it.

Zone3 tries to combine style with high performance and style so you can get the most for your money.

This trisuit features:

  • The graphic side panel to add a little personality to your race day kit and make you stand out as you pass a crowd.
  • Lycra Sport fabric is supposed to complement the printed panels so you can have support with a flashy design.
  • The eTri-Lite pad is designed specifically for women in triathlons. It’s small and purposely placed. The multiple thickness technologies reduce water absorption and provide comfort on the bike.
  • Inner Built-In Bra is there for those who need it or does not want to wear additional clothes on race day.
  • Elastic Technology increases comfort without decreasing the support and snugness of the suit. The seams are sewn so that chafing is reduced a minimal rubbing occurs during either practice or race day.
  • Storage pocket with an elastic band placed on the back of the suit for nutrition access during the bike or run.
  • Silicone UFO leg grippers are on the inside knee of the suit to prevent the suit from moving during the entire race.
  • Front zipper with zip protection for extra ventilation during the race. The zipper comes with an inner lining to reduce any discomfort from the zipper.
Zone3 Women’s Activate Plus Trisuit Reviews

On land, the suit should fit nicely with added support from the built-in bra.

During a race or practice, you should be able to perform as you normally do with extra support from the suit.

I would not recommend this trisuit because it’s not practically built. The extra features such as the built-in bra, while a nice touch, do more “harm” than “good”. You might be better off wearing an extremely tight trisuit without a bra or wear one that doesn’t absorb water.

3. Sugoi RPM Triathlon Suit

Sugoi Rpm Triathlon Suit Reviews

The Sugoi RPM Women’s triathlon suit has a slick design to complement its performance skill, which might be your perfect tool for practice or race day.

Sugoi’s women’s trisuit is home to the TriLite 2 chamois, which is the most up-to-date chamois on the market.

The trisuit also has a “molded” center channel with a low profile and wicking material to complement the TriLite 2 chamois.

The trisuit also features:

  • Flat seams to ensure your comfort along with a low profile.
  • Zone construction with a mesh panel for breathability.
  • Front zipper for extra ventilation.
  • Hydrodynamic fuel pockets to reduce drag in the water.
  • Tightest fit called “Pro-Fit”.
  • The trisuit is designed with Triflex and Vector Stretch materials to keep it snug on your body and allow you to move freely.

On land, the trisuit should fit you nicely and be relatively easy to get on compared to your wetsuit.

During a race or even practice, the trisuit should feel tight on your body without constricting your movement or causing chafing or other irritations.

I’d recommend this trisuit to those triathletes who fall on the petite side. The torso length might be a good match and you might have less water drag during the swim.

4. Trisuit For Women by Betty Designs

Betty Design Pucciesque Sleeveless Trisuit Review

Betty Designs may be a bit confusing of a brand name considering there is no “Betty,” but one thing is for certain: this company which seeks to blend the performance of professional endurance sportswear with the highest senses of fashion is equally effective on both counts. That said, it should be understood that Betty Designs does not focus exclusively on triathlon tri suits nor does it specialize in triathlon exclusive gear more generally. Still, all of the gear made fills a niche within the triathlon’s different legs and is of exceptionally high-quality.

Much like with our editor’s choice men’s tri suit winner, we consider the Betty Designs tri suit to be so well-performing in a large part due to the choices of materials used and the highly specialized use of different materials for different benefits. For instance, the side panels are made out of Betty Designs patented ReactorMesh which simultaneously wicks moisture and sweat off of your body while it provides additional ventilation. On top of that, the Acqua Zero Lite fabric used for the main body panels features a hydrophobic effect to both prevent water from getting in during the swim leg as well as wick sweat and moisture away during the other legs.

Another area where Betty Designs aims to provide some specialization for women is in the bodice in that they do not include a built-in bra. While this feature may be seen as convenient to some racers, it saves little weight and does not work for everyone equally. As such, its absence provides you the freedom to choose whichever support works best for you. On top of that, this women’s tri suit also comes with UPF 50+ protection, which while not the best we have seen, is still fairly good all things considered. Finally, this tri suit uses a tri chamois that is specifically engineered to be worn by a woman so that the bike saddle is as comfortable as can be.

5. Orca Women’s Core Tri Race Suit – Best Women’s Full-Race Tri Suit

Orca Women's Core Tri Race Suit Review

When considering the background of a company Orca provides arguably one of the most ideal you could potentially conceive. For instance, it was founded in almost 3 decades prior and was made not only to cater to the emerging professional triathlon market but the female professional triathlon market more particularly. On top of that, Orca was founded by a winning triathlete whose sole purpose was to make the best triathlon gear possible-though their effectiveness in the water has definitely geared the brand a bit more towards that specialization.

As mentioned prior, the Orca Core, and virtually all of their products, almost seem intentionally focused towards its ability to work as well in water as it does out of the water. That said, it should be understood that, while Orca may lean into their strength an appropriate degree, the company ensures that they do not ignore or overlook its functions in the running or biking leg of the triathlon. Still, the AquaStretch fabric used in the Orca Core construction does an excellent job of both providing additional ventilation and breathability as well as wicking off sweat and moisture while providing a hydrophobic layer of Enduro coating for cutting through the water.

As another brand based on the ideas that professional triathletes suggest for improving triathlon gear and equipment, it should not be that surprising that Orca places a strong focus on comfort since so many brands based primarily on squeezing every bit of performance out of the tri suit exclude comfort as a secondary byproduct. One of the biggest benefits to this effect is the inclusion of a Tri-Support Chamois which was specifically designed for a female wearer and provides a great deal of enduring support during the biking leg without any undue distraction or chafing during the run or swim legs of the race. Finally, out of all of the different brands that we saw, Orca does the best at providing a fit that seems to be the truest in comparison to other manufacturers.

6. Pearl iZUMi Select Pursuit – Best Price Budget Women’s Tri Suit

Pearl Izumi Select Tri Suit Review

Out of all the brands on our list, none of them has as storied nor as unique a history as the Pearl iZUMi company. This is by far the oldest company with almost 7 decades of experience behind them, though not all of that experience was in making triathlon equipment and gear. Instead, like many other top brands, Pearl iZUMi first gained notoriety by making a more specialized product for a more established sport in this instance, biking. That said, Pearl iZUMi has shifted effortlessly from their previous focus and now offers one of the best triathlon tri suits at by far one of the best prices that we have seen.

Even though Pearl iZUMi may have shifted to a triathlon exclusive manufacturing company does mean that they decided to simply throw everything they knew out the window. In fact, though the swimming leg generally presents the most issues to a tri suit, the biking and the running legs of the race are actually far more similar than they are different, especially compared to the swimming leg, and one of the main qualities both legs of the race require is breathability. In order to keep your body temperature down during the endurance race, the Pearl iZUMi Select makes it a point to use quick-drying fabrics and materials throughout the tri suit’s construction.

Beyond the various strides made in favor of the land-based legs of the triathlon, the Pearl iZUMi Select is still an all-around solid tri suit suitable for almost any setting outside of race set in colder climes. For one, this tri suit is made of nylon and lycra so it will provide a durable fit that also stretches to add compression to your muscles-though this tri suit does have a tendency to run a bit on the small side. Still, the flatlock seams ensure that you do not have to worry about the durability of this tri suit, while the envelope pocket provides a convenient place to carry something without having to worry about it adding to your drag.

Best Tri Suits – Buyer’s Guide

The name tri suit is a shortened form of triathlon suits and they refer to the suits worn by athletes who participate in the triathlon events. These suits have become technologically more and more advanced as the years have gone by and they are available for both men and women. Triathlon events require a great amount of endurance and tri suits have to be perfectly designed keeping the events and the athletes’ needs in mind. There are three events in the triathlon – cycling, running and swimming and the athletes competing have to be in peak condition as well as wear tri suits that allow them to perform to their best capabilities.

What to Look for in a Tri Suit

Tri suits are designed out of lycra material which is thin so that it offers the least resistance while the athlete is going through all the three different events. Tri suits should not be confused with wet suits which are designed specially for swimmers, though they tend to look a bit like wetsuits. You don’t have to be too particular when you are buying a tri suit. It should be light, it should fit well and it should look good on you. You might want to wear it later to go out cycling, swimming or running. If you are not a professional, look at the more reasonably-priced entry-level tri suits. Most tri suits last for years so you don’t need to worry on that score. You might want to look at reputed brands to make sure you get well manufactured and well designed tri suits.

Tri suits, as we said, are light weight and made of lycra so they dry quickly and they do not weigh you down. That’s the whole idea of tri suits – to cover you and yet not slow you down in any way. Even the lower priced tri suits look good and very often, they do not look too different from the more expensive, professional ones. There are tri suits that you can buy for men, for women and even for kids. The technologically advanced material that is used in designing these tri suits makes them dry faster and they very often come with a chamois pad at the bottom which does not slow you down when you run but provides a comfortable seat when you are cycling. Make sure the tri suits you choose feel light and breathable and test the zip to ensure that it is easy to use. The main thing tri suits should offer you is comfort. Some tri suits come with pockets designed in them so you can put something in. Most tri suits come with helmets to match so make sure that the helmets are comfortable too.

When it comes to the materials used for tri suits, the full list is far too long and idiosyncratic to include every single one. That said, the majority of tri suits are actually made primarily out of a few different materials which are generally considered the standard, and only a proprietary blend is liable to be better. In this regard, all tri suits have a few qualities about them that are required for them to perform successfully. All of the materials used in tri suits should be able to both stretch tight as a well as potentially provide some compression on top of the expected durability.

Best Triathlon Suits for Men Review

Polyester – When it comes to the primary fabrics used in the construction of tri suits, polyester is not really the most common, but it fills a particular niche in terms of its intended focus. In this instance, you will want to favor a polyester blend with your tri suit as it is more naturally water resistant than the other materials on our list. On the other hand, polyester does not really offer too terribly much in regards to the other materials. It is the least durable synthetic fiber used in tri suits, though it is not weak and will last as long as the stitches hold. Still, polyester is not the most flexible material either, so it is not the ideal material for roughly 2 legs of a 3 leg race.

Nylon – Nylon is by far one of the more common synthetic fibers used in tri suits and should be considered one of the standards for a more generalized tri suit-outside of some type of proprietary fiber that was designed specifically to replace the sturdiness of nylon. That said, nylon is not as naturally water resistant as polyester and will require more or thicker coatings to provide an equally hydrophobic effect. On top of that, nylon is also prone to bleaching in the sun, so a tri suit made primarily out of nylon will need to be treated for UV protection-thankfully, the same protection that prevents the tri suit from suffering UV damage also protects the wearer as well. In terms of durability, nylon is by far the most durable of the three primary fibers used for making tri suits.

Lycra – Lycra is the technical name for the material more commonly known as Spandex and it serves a vital role in tri suits. In fact, this is the only material on our list that will be found in literally every tri suit if for no other reason than because it is what provides the fit, compression, and elasticity of a tri suit. That said, much like every other material commonly found in tri suits, there are always manufacturers who will develop proprietary blends and materials which are technically better than lycra at its role. Still, the variety of qualities that can be altered either by altering the lycra itself or by changing its weave features allows this incredibly versatile material to find its way into virtually every tri suit on the market.

Best Tri Suit for Half Ironman

Outside of the materials used, the most important quality for determining how durable the tri suit will be is the stitching process. It is important to remember that stitching, even into naturally water-resistant materials, is ultimately puncturing holes into the material. Depending on how those holes are punched at the different seams will determine to a great deal how well the tri suit ultimately repels water. In this case, the number of different types of stitching is far fewer in number than for wetsuits, and your best bet with material as thin and lightweight as those used for tri suits is a simple flatlock stitch which is more than sufficient for most tri suit needs.

When it comes to the construction of a tri suit, the important thing to remember is that different parts are best served by providing different benefits. For instance, the sides of the tri suit are not a great place for any kind of addition as it could unduly cause issues with your arm swing, but it is a great place to put additional ventilation to help keep the warmest part of the torso a little bit cooler. Similarly, if a tri suit is looking to provide some assistance when it comes to the swimming leg of the race, a manufacturer may add some type of panel that provides additional buoyancy to help you keep your form. The important thing in this respect is to make sure that you get a tri suit which has panels that provide benefits catered to your strengths and weaknesses.

De Soto Trisuit Review Pad

The padding of a tri suit may be a bit of a deceiving quality in that it in no way is meant to imply the same kind of padding that is associated with a wetsuit. Instead, the padding of a tri suit is far more similar in design to the padding of a pair of biking shorts. That said, dedicated biking shorts can afford to completely sell out on the cushion for the saddle, whereas a tri suit must be able to transition quickly between the different types of legs of the race. As such, a tri suit is far more liable to have incredibly focused applications of padding so as to not impede whatever other events it is not designed for.

Chamois – This is arguably the most important piece of padding that will be included in every tri suit, which is not a common distinction. Some tri suits might have different types of pads that perform one function or another, but because every triathlon includes a biking leg of the race, there is without absence a chamois. One thing to keep in mind about a chamois is that bigger is not necessarily better as the added weight and friction caused by a larger chamois is not worth the trade-off. Instead, manufacturers will opt to make a chamois that is far denser while still providing great cushioning.

Tri Suit Pocket

While the original triathlon suits, which were simply more versatile running, biking, and wetsuits, did not see the need to include pockets for their particular sport, the very nature of a triathlon as an endurance-based sport almost necessitates the carrying of additional gear or supplies. One of the most common things for nearly every racer to carry is some form of energy at some point during the race. That said, the type of gear that is liable to be found on serious triathletes will often transcend the mere snack, and there are plenty of manufacturers that cater to this type of racer. One thing to keep in mind when examining the pockets is making sure that they are designed to prevent drag, or else you may end up losing more time in the swimming leg than you gain in either the running or biking legs.

In the end, there is not going to a single tri suit that is the best tri suit for all racers, especially if you have a particular strength or weakness in one leg or another. In this instance, you will likely want to find a tri suit that is designed to specifically accommodate your needs. That said, for the rest of us, there are two clear winners in the male and female tri suit categories, and they both do so in similar ways.
For the general male racer who is simply looking to improve his time regardless the setting of the race, we recommend the Roka Elite Gen II and De Soto Sport Forza. While this tri suit is not intended to be used as a substitute for a wetsuit, it is one of the few tri suits that were designed to be worn under a wetsuit, providing you with a tri suit that can be worn for any race and still provide loads of benefits for every leg of the race.
For women, the tri suit market is a bit different considering that none of the brands make it a point to provide a “universal” model, so you must consider the fit of the tri suit a bit more, especially if you already have other gear, like a wetsuit, made by a different brand. Still, we ultimately recommend the Roka, which actually took us a bit by surprise upon reflection as well, but with the use of numerous specialized fabrics and build features, the choice was easy.
