Posters are central to the player’s experience in Night City, the dystopian setting of Cyberpunk 2077. I always believed they would be the most telling piece of the game’s world-building, the biggest indicator of the game’s underlying ideas. For better or for worse, I was right.

Even before the game launched, the posters were a key feature of the game’s marketing. In particular, one for the fictional energy drink Chromanticore, which features a feminine character with a huge, bulging crotch and the tagline “Mix it up.” The poster, and the toxic marketing campaign that developers CD Projekt Red built around it, have been discussed many times, including by myself. By examining Cyberpunk’s posters, we can begin to see the issues—not only with the game’s themes—but with the direction of the AAA scene over the past decade or so.

When we think of world-building in games, we tend to think of it on a more macro level. By this metric, there are some things Cyberpunk 2077 gets right—from the fantastic, entirely original soundtrack to the supporting characters like Panam Palmer. There’s also a lot it gets wrong, however, such as the mixed messages about the police’s role in perpetuating dystopia, endless movie references that undercut the game’s ability to tell stories, and most of the characters that aren’t closely linked to the narrative feeling underdeveloped and empty.

While it’s hit and miss at the big-picture ideas, the posters themselves are genius—but that might not be a good thing. I’ve counted close to 100 posters in Cyberpunk 2077, with several coming in different variants. If you choose any four at random, you’ll end up with a solid idea of what Night City is. The issue is that Night City isn’t particularly deep. It has different regions controlled by different gangs, but apart from the Badlands on the city limits—which features hardly any posters—the posters don’t differ thematically from one end to the other. CDPR made a lot of posters for this game, but it feels like it just chose 100 or so of its favorites and scattered them randomly across the city. While there are distinct geographic areas in-game (some places are near the coast, others the desert, others crowded cosmopolitan centers), the soul of every area in Night City feels remarkably similar.

As well as understanding Night City in an instant, there’s a high chance those posters chosen at random will contain explicit and exploitative imagery, many far more so than the “Mix it up” poster. They’re full of sex, violence, and often sexual violence. They contain racist imagery, dehumanising imagery, and shockingly gory imagery. Despite hyperconsumerism being Cyberpunk 101, there aren’t too many run-of-the-mill “Buy some new sneakers!” posters. Everything is dialed up to 11. If they’re telling you to buy something, it’s usually something sexual, something violent, or they’re selling it to you through sex and violence.

Cyberpunk’s posters, according to Piers Robinson, codirector of the UK-based Organisation for Propaganda Studies, can be understood as “surface level.”

“They construct the feel of the game with its focus on a dystopian world dominated by, in its own words, ‘power, glamour, and body modification,’” Robinson said. “Whatever one’s moral stance regarding the images, which to some will be shocking and provocative but not to others, they presumably work well in terms of creating an appropriate visual backdrop for the fantasy game.”

Robinson suggests that the use of such extreme imagery constantly throughout the game can reinforce a tolerance of these ideas within players, in much the same way Call Of Duty reinforces a tolerance of war. “They may serve to establish truths whereby particular beliefs and understandings become accepted as correct or normal,” Robinson says. “Although the intention of the game producers may only be to provide just ‘window dressing’ for the game, they may also be communicating in a way that is ideological and which, at least potentially, has important consequences.”

In essence, while the game presents the posters in the background without comment, they are so ever-present and shocking that the game can be seen to support the ideas behind these images, especially when the game fails to examine them critically in other, more meaningful ways. We see women, often dead and/or naked women, used as props and set dressing frequently, but the game never explores their perspective of life in a hyper-exploitative city. Violence is consequenceless. If the posters are supposed to be satirical or ironic, the game itself fails to provide an alternative view of women, violence, or exploitation necessary to convey an ironic tone.

There are far too many individual posters in Cyberpunk worthy of analysis, but just taking a handful highlights the exploitative nature of Night City’s world. Perhaps the most cartoonish marriage of sex and violence is the advert for the Squirtaquisitor 7000. It’s a pink phallic gun, with the tagline “It ain’t the gun that squirts!” The poster also depicts a beautiful woman shooting herself in the head with an explosion of pink goo, while she masturbates with her other hand. Others are less comical in this marriage. A poster for Dynalar, with the tagline “It’s all about the touch,” shows a topless woman whose hair is being roughly grabbed by an arm that disappears off-screen. From the angle of the arm, she appears to be kneeling, this hand firmly in control of her. Another, similar poster features the tagline “Too good to waste” and depicts a nearly naked woman seductively licking liquor off the floor. We see further adverts that feature phallic champagne bottles (spraying froth on a woman’s face and chest), phallic snakes (a poster which reads “wide open” and shows the snake slithering to a woman’s bare buttocks), and phallic drinks (several, one of which sees a woman licking the shaft, another that shows a faceless woman holding it between her breasts while dogs lick her stomach). At one point, I stepped into an elevator with eight adverts. Seven of them objectified women in some way, while the eighth depicted a fat man on the toilet.

There are many others, including a hotel sign which reads “HO,” followed by two Japanese kana which resemble the letters “T” and “L” but are logically nonsensical. This combination of English and Asian styles, in a way that both renders the Asian portions useless yet implies an insidious invasion of Western culture, is one of many examples of “yellow peril” tropes within the game, alongside the central Arasaka Corp. villains being Japanese, and the Asian-coded Tyger Claws gang wielding katanas.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a map game with a linear story, side quests, romance options, driving, and gunplay. It’s a AAA video game. If you switch the name Cyberpunk 2077 with “any AAA open-world video game since Assassin’s Creed,” the sentence will still make sense. Cyberpunk 2077 gave us more of the same, with little introspection, and was praised for it. While aspects of the game were criticized, too many were prepared to look the other way and blame the game’s every flaw on bugs.

Much like Night City’s posters, many AAA titles are visually gorgeous but thematically empty, if not downright thematically harmful. As with the posters, Cyberpunk 2077 slides by on recognizable images, ones that often harm minorities—and in turn is praised on a purely aesthetic level rather than examining what these aesthetics depict. We praise graphics to almost fetishistic levels, but often fail to hold our medium to account for its ideas, its imagery, and its lack of innovation. Has open-world game design improved much since 2010? Has the AAA scene in general? We haven’t seen much bravery, and that’s in part because of the areas we focus on—and ignore—in game critiques. There’s been a lot of talk about the new possibilities the next-gen consoles bring, but this conversation has been dominated by the thought of cleaner graphics which load faster, not of any genuinely new ideas.

CDPR knows how to make a critically adored game, as it proved with The Witcher III. Bugs aside, Cyberpunk 2077 is a textbook example of that formula. Just like its posters, it has very little substance, and it is often harmful when it has—but it's gorgeous, loud, sexy, and violent. It seems like that’s enough. But maybe it shouldn’t be.

Cyberpunk 2077 review – could it ever live up to the hype?

So here we finally are, in Night City. Almost a decade after it was first announced, CD Projekt’s massively ambitious role-playing game has launched into a swirling maelstrom of hype and controversy that befits its salacious, histrionic setting. Like the technological MacGuffin at the centre of the plot, Cyberpunk 2077 is highly advanced and ingenious, but also bug-ridden and irresponsible.

You play as V, a cybernetically enhanced street hustler looking to make their name on these squalid, vicious streets, taking infiltration and assassination jobs for the gangs who’ve carved up the criminal underworld. While attempting to steal a cutting-edge biochip from a powerful corporation, you implant it in your own head, unknowingly infecting yourself with the digital ghost of dead rocker and anarchist Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves, essentially playing Theodore “Ted” Logan’s asshole brother). If you don’t get him out of your brain, you’ll both die.

From here, you’re on a hot-wired muscle-car joyride through cyberpunk trope city. There are shady corporations, raincoat-clad hackers and robotic sex workers; there are futuristic penthouses to raid and hi-tech facilities to infiltrate. In the main missions, you ricochet through a complicated plot awash with interesting characters – hitmen, backstreet cyber-surgeons, ruthless club owners – and there are genuinely moving moments along the way as you form relationships with allies and enemies alike.

You can play Cyberpunk 2077 as a stealth game, keeping conflict to a minimum by hacking cameras and security droids. But that would be a shame, as the array of weapons, from old-school revolvers to smart rifles, is delicious and the gunplay is excellent. One scene, taking place around an astonishing dashi parade complete with giant holographic fish, feels like a Christopher Nolan sci-fi assassination movie. There’s another, set far out in the dusty wastelands, where you raid a power station in order to set off an ECM pulse that will bring down a passing aircraft. As the vessel begins to lose altitude, you pursue it to its crash site, zooming cross-country on motorbikes – a rip-roaring chase sequence that contrasts wonderfully with the claustrophobic feel of the city.

There’s nothing new here, though. The game is heavily based on the Cyberpunk tabletop game by Mike Pondsmith, but the writers have also taken every idea they can from The Fifth Element, Strange Days, Neuromancer, Robocop and, of course, Blade Runner, which has been well and truly stripped for architectural and existential themes. I’ve seen things you people definitely would believe.

There are also elements of the genre-defining cyberpunk role-playing game Deus Ex. Like that classic title, Cyberpunk 2077 relies on a vast web of character upgrade and customisation options, which unfurls as you progress. Unfortunately, considering how much time you spend on these screens, actually using them is a disaster. Menus are cluttered and confusing, and comparing weapons or sorting out cybernetic buffs is only ever a chore you get better at rather than a pleasure. In an age where battle royale and collectible card games have made inventory management intuitive, seamless and enjoyable, there’s no excuse for such obtuse design.

Night City itself is a pulsating, seductive neon hellscape, part Mos Eisley, part hyperreal satire on failed 1960s urban housing projects. Concrete and steel megastructures rise out of the stinking streets, their exteriors glittering with advertisement screens the size of football pitches. Beneath these corporate monoliths, the masses live in techno shantytowns where neon-lit smog hangs in the fetid air and there’s a fight or a deal under way in every alley. Interacting with things – picking up objects, or frisking downed enemies, for instance – is finicky, but this is a captivating and exhausting place, so thoroughly conceived and dense with activity that, sometimes, you feel like you’re really there. This world is an extraordinary achievement that must have required as much time, effort and sheer will as the construction of a medieval cathedral. God knows the toll it’s taken on the staff, who have been working overtime for most of 2020 to get the game out.

Amid the excitement, there are many troubling aspects. How unoriginal of the writers to posit that a technological dystopia will inevitably involve the misogynistic commoditisation of female-presenting bodies, with android sex dolls, gyrating holographic lapdancers and ads for X-rated TV shows with titles such as Watson Whores playing out on every screen. Furthermore, the representation of the powerful Arasaka family as elitist Japanese colonisers revolted by the American way of life recalls the dehumanising “yellow peril” sci-fi of the early 20th century, without ever really interrogating it in a convincing way.

As for the bugs we’ve heard about from early reviewers who experienced crashes and character animation freakouts, post-launch updates have calmed the situation a little, but the PlayStation and Xbox versions are still a shameful mess that CD Projekt has rightly apologised for. Ingenious technical tricks conceal some of the shortcomings, but they can’t hide them all. I’m playing on a high-spec PC and, for the most part, it is running smoothly with all the visual settings at high or ultra, but I’ve still seen characters float through walls, and my V spent several minutes with her arms thrust out in front of her like a zombie. I’ve also had side missions that just wouldn’t finish or allow me to pick up a reward, because somehow the end point hadn’t been triggered.

It speaks of a game that was absolutely not ready for release – but then, maybe it never would have been. Perhaps the only answer to Cyberpunk 2077’s constant delays was to get it out there and fix it on the fly – a broken business model the industry cannot simply accept. Canny players should wait a few more weeks before diving in, especially on consoles. Even on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X there’s a lot of room for improvement.

When it’s working, Cyberpunk 2077 is at once extravagant, ridiculous, sophisticated, silly, hateful and joyous. As an action-packed role-playing game for people who are happy to view the cyberpunk genre as something about robots and hacking and cool guns, it is exhilarating. It tries to have something to say about the corporate dismantling of democracy and the systemisation of our lives as we become slaves to invasive devices and their creators, but never quite manages; it also attempts to explore themes of sexuality and gender in a transhumanist landscape, but in the end that amounts to littering the city with dildo shops and allowing you to romance a couple of same-sex allies. Like a schoolboy studying The Handmaid’s Tale, it shows a vague understanding that dystopias are bad and sexist, but it can’t help giggling at the rude bits anyway.

Does Cyberpunk 2077 live up to the hype? Is it significantly deeper than Watch Dogs: Legion or Yakuza: Like a Dragon? Is it as good as Grand Theft Auto V? The answer to all of these questions is no. The sheer size of the world, its astonishing architecture, its set-piece battles, its stylistic bravado – all are testament to the efforts of a talented workforce. But you have to play by its rules, accepting Night City’s xenophobia and misogyny as unavoidable fictive components. Unlike Los Santos, this is not a multifaceted sandbox where you’re free to create whole new activities unforeseen by the designers. You’re there to do missions and side-missions, and the world only yields thus far. You’re always a tourist, never a citizen.

In this way, Cyberpunk 2077 resembles a vast, futuristic Las Vegas. You come here and have a hell of a week, but then you wake up one morning feeling jaded and complicit, and you realise that the glitzy signs lead nowhere, the noise is meaningless, and when you look beyond the strip, there is only desert.

Hackers have reportedly sold the game source code and other information stolen from Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 studio CD Projekt Red (CDPR). Cybersecurity firm Kela released screenshots of a post on the hacking forum Exploit allegedly posted by the attackers, saying that they’ve received an offer for the data from outside the forum. They added that they ended the auction at the request of the buyer. Cybersecurity Twitter account vx-underground subsequently confirmed that the auction had closed.

On Tuesday, CDPR disclosed it had been the victim of a ransomware attack in which hackers had collected “certain data” from the company. It posted a ransom note from the hackers, in which they claimed to have access to source code from the studio’s most popular games, as well as internal legal, HR, and financial documents. CDPR said it would not give in to the demands or negotiate with the hackers, even if that meant the stolen data would begin circulating online.

It is not known who purchased the data or how much it was sold for. However, the auction was thought to have included source code for Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales spinoff,The Witcher 3, a ray-traced version of The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and copies of the company’s internal documents. That’s according to screenshots posted by vx-underground. The auction followed a leak of the source code for CD Projekt Red’svirtual card game Gwent, which was verified by Vice.

Kela previously reported that the starting price for the auction was $1 million, with a buy-it-now price of $7 million. These terms were subsequently verified by vx-underground, too.

Although the hackers have not been officially named, one security researcher told Wired he believed it involved the use of the HelloKitty ransomware, which had also been used to hack a Brazilian power company called CEMIG.

A spokesperson from CD Projekt Red did not immediately return The Verge’s request for comment. However, earlier this week the company told Viceit is still “actively investigating” the incident.
