RTX 2070 benchmark with i7-8700K 1080p, 1440p, Ultrawide, 4K benchmarks at Ultra Quality

The RTX 2080 might be the high-end flagship of the latest Turing set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most mid-range PC gamers. On the other hand, the RTX 2070 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 499. The good news is, with the release of the RTX 2070 SUPER, the RTX 2070 's price is getting more discount.

NVIDIA ’s xx70 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the Turing graphics card inside the RTX 2070, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. The RTX 2070 is much more expensive than the GTX 1070 as it costs a whopping $ 499. Compare this to the GTX 1070, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, which came originally at a price of $ 399, $ 409. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the RX 5700 XT which costs $ 399.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 2070 blows past the GTX 1070, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and, amazingly, even the GTX 1080 as well. Unfortunately, gaming performance was not quite as impressive. Even if the RTX 2070 consistently delivers frame rate increases over the GTX 1070, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, the gain is not much to justify an upgrade.

Whether it is a justifiable upgrade depends on what graphics card you are upgrading from. Users with a GTX 1070, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti will not see a remarkable increase in frame rates after paying more for this RTX 2070. Similarly, those holding onto RX 5700 XT 's RX Vega 56 graphics cards will not have a reason to jump teams yet. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Metro Exodus, Marvel's Avengers, Borderlands 3, Anthem at 65 fps to 84 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 73 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Anthem, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Gears of War 5, Need For Speed: Heat, Just Cause 4 at 67 fps to 72 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 70 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Fallout 76, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Forza Horizon 4, Valorant at 61 fps to 174 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 92 fps.

The RTX 2070 sits between the RTX 3060 and the RX 5700, falling slower than RTX 3060 by 4.6% and faster than RX 5700 by 3.2%. It has an average relative performance against every graphics card here. In addition, the RTX 2070 was also faster than the GTX 1070 by a good margin.

Forza Horizon 4 (2018)

The RTX 2070 sits between the RTX 3060 and the RX 6600 XT, falling slower than RTX 3060 by 2.4% and faster than RX 6600 XT by 3.3%. It has a strong relative performance against every graphics card here. Its results are actually indistinguishable from those of the RTX 3060. Those who have a high refresh rate monitor will enjoy what RTX 2070 has to offer as it averages 125 fps. The RTX 2070 averaged 125 fps in , topping the RX 5700 XT by a good margin. In addition, the RTX 2070 was also faster than the GTX 1070 by a good margin.

The RTX 2070 sits between the RTX 3060 and the RX 5700, falling slower than RTX 3060 by 3.9% and faster than RX 5700 by 2.2%. It has an average relative performance against every graphics card here. In addition, the RTX 2070 was also faster than the GTX 1070 by a good margin.

The RTX 2070 averaged 103 fps in , topping the RX 5700 XT by a good margin. In addition, the RTX 2070 was also faster than the GTX 1070 by a good margin.

It has an average relative performance against every graphics card here. Those who have a high refresh rate monitor will enjoy what RTX 2070 has to offer as it averages 131 fps. In addition, the RTX 2070 was also faster than the GTX 1070 by a good margin.

Just like the xx70 cards before it, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 stands firmly in that middle ground to give you quite a bit of performance for a bit less than the price of Nvidia’s flagship. It splits the difference between value and performance in the Turing series of graphics cards. So, while the GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti both deliver outstanding performance, it’s the RTX 2070 that delivers more value to most consumers.

Essentially, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 knocks off a little of that premium price without sacrificing too much of its ray-tracing capabilities. And having tested the GPU, we know this for a fact. Overclockers will especially be able to squeeze some extra horsepower out of this Turing GPU.

Even with the release of both AMD Navi and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super, as well as the impending release of RTX 3070, which costs much less for faster performance, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 is still worth looking into if you can find it. In fact, the retailers still stocking the card will probably knock the price down even more with the RTX 3000 line unveiling at the company's September 1 event.

Price and availability

Much like the other Nvidia Turing graphics cards, the Nvidia RTX 2070 is much more expensive than the GTX 1070. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition, costs a whopping $529 (about £420, AU$760).

Thankfully, you’ll find many third-party Nvidia RTX 2070 cards at a more palatable $499 (about £380, AU$690) price. Both of which are available to purchase now in the US and UK.

For reference, the Founders Edition version of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 originally came priced at $449 (£419, AU$759) and $399 (£379, AU$699), respectively. Meanwhile, AMD’s closest equivalent cards are the $399 (about 320, AU$570) Radeon RX Vega 64 and $298 (about £240, AU$430) Radeon RX Vega 56.

Features and chipset

The Nvidia RTX 2070 not only looks exciting because it’s the cheapest RTX graphics card you can buy currently. It also packs an impressive transistor count. Spec for spec, this GPU leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the GeForce GTX 1070, by boasting 20% more CUDA cores and 6Gbps faster GDDR6 video memory.  

In comparison to the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080, Nvidia’s new mid-range graphics card has a lower stream processor and texture unit count. 

It also features significantly noticeably fewer Ray Tracing (RT) cores and AI-powered Tensor cores compared to the rest of the Nvidia Turing lineup. However, without any real-world ray tracing or deep learning super-sampling (DLSS) benchmarks at the time of the review, we didn’t yet know how well this GPU will handle Nvidia’s latest graphics technologies.  

Another letdown is that the Nvidia RTX 2070 doesn’t support pairing multiple GPUs through SLI. Although Nvidia introduced a much higher bandwidth NVLink Bridge connector with Turing, the RTX 2070 doesn’t feature this new connector at all. If you’re looking to do a multi-GPU setup, you’ll have to plunk down more money on a higher-end graphics card from Nvidia.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super with Max-Q design is the power saving variant of the mobile GeForce RTX 2070 Super with reduced clock speeds, performance and of course power consumption. It is intended for thin gaming laptops. It is based on the same TU104-725-A1 chip with 2,560 shaders, 8 GB GDDR6 memory and a 256 Bit memory bus. Currently we know of three variants with a TGP of 80, 85 and 90 Watt, base clock speeds of 930, 1005, and 1080 MHz, and turbo clock speeds of 1155, 1230 and 1290 MHz. The mobile variant for comparison is rated at 115 W and 1140 - 1380 MHz.

With the refresh, Nvidia also reworked the Max-Q technologies for more efficiency. Low Voltage GDDR6 (lower clocked but more headroom for the GPU) and improved regulator efficiency should improve the performance per Watt. Two new optional features can also be implemented by the OEM. Max-Q Dynamic Boost is able to shift power from the CPU to the GPU on a per frame basis to increase overall performance. Furthermore, the laptop manufacturer can also implement Advanced Optimus with a dynamic display switch (hardware) to enable Optimus, G-SYNC and high refresh rate displays (up to 4K 120 Hz).

Features

NVIDIA manufacturers the TU104 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTRT), which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company's Pascal architecture (if the games supports it). The RTX 2070 Super Max-Q is also DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) and H.265 video en/decoding (PlayReady 3.0).

Performance

Due to the lower clock rates, the Max-Q variant is clearly slower than the mobile RTX 2070 Super. The difference depends on the used variant, where the 90 W version is only slightly slower. Therefore, the performance should be sufficient for maximum detail settings at a QHD resolution. With raytracing enabled, you may have to reduce settings or resolution. Less demanding games can be easily played in 4k.

The power consumption of the card is between 80 - 90 Watt TGP and therefore clearly lower than the RTX 2070 Super Mobile (115 Watt).

The conclusions we reached in our Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition Review apply here as well. Mainly, GeForce RTX 2070 isn’t fast enough for smooth performance at 4K with detail settings maxed out. But you can expect acceptable results at 3840 x 2160, so long as you’re willing to dial back quality in certain cases.
