During remote play, PS Vita system or PSP™ system buttons are used to operate the PS3™ system.

Using a PS Vita system to operate the PS3™ system

During remote play, you operate most of the PS3™ system's features using the buttons on your PS Vita system.
You operate several features using the toolbar. Tap the screen to display the toolbar.

Operating the PS3™ system's PS button

This replicates the action of pushing the PS button on the PS3™ system's wireless controller.

Tap the screen.

Tap   (PS).

The (PS) icon does not support those operations for which you press and hold the PS button on the PS3™ system's wireless controller for one second or more. To turn off the PS3™ system, tap (Turn Off System), and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Changing button assignments

You can choose between button assignments [Type 1] and [Type 2]. If you choose [Type 2], you can perform some operations by simultaneously pressing button combinations that are not available on the PS Vita system, such as the L2 and R3 buttons.

Tap the screen.

Tap (Settings) > [Assign Buttons].

Tap the button assignment type you want to use.

Setting the image quality

You can set the image quality [+1], [Standard] or [-1].

Tap the screen.

Tap (Settings) > [Image Quality].

Tap the desired image quality.

Depending on the network environment, with a high image quality, the video and associated audio might break.

Restoring remote play settings

To clear the device registration and restore button assignments and the image quality setting to their default values:

Tap the screen.

Tap   (Settings) > [Restore Settings] > [Restore] > [OK].

You can also restore the settings from the screen where you select the remote play connection method. Tap   (Options) > [Settings] > [Restore Settings] and follow the on-screen instructions.

Switching the screen mode

You can switch the screen mode by double tapping the screen.

You cannot switch the screen mode when the toolbar is displayed on the screen or while playing a game.

Using a PSP™ system to operate the PS3™ system

If you are using a PSP™ system for remote play, when you press the PS button (HOME button), a menu for operating the PS3™ system appears.

Menu items

The menu items that are available on the PSP™ system vary depending on the version of the system software in use.

Quit Remote PlayQuit remote play.

Quit and Turn Off the PS3™ System: Quit remote play, and then turn off the PS3™ system.

Quit Without Turning Off the PS3™ System: Quit remote play and leave the PS3™ system turned on. Select this option if you are using your PS3™ system to copy files, or to perform background downloading and other tasks that require you to keep your system on.
SettingsAdjust settings related to the PSP™ system's buttons.

Assign Buttons: Use the PSP™ system's buttons in the same way as the buttons of the PS3™ system's wireless controller. Select one of two assignment types.

Communication Settings: Set the response speed of the PSP™ system buttons. Select one of five levels that combine response speed with image quality, or select [Custom]. *2

How to use a PS4 controller on PS3

There's still plenty of amazing games on last gen - head to our best PS3 games to find out exactly what they are - but the only thing that might stop you from switching HDMI inputs is the thought of having to use your old DualShock 3. There's a reason we've evolved to the DualShock 4 and that's because the previous generation is a bit like a medieval torture device for your fingers. It looks like it should be fine but very quickly your now (clearly sensitive) muscles just can't cope with unwieldy plastic of yore. You need your DS4 and you need it now.

Well the good news is that it's possible to control the past with the future using oh-so-handy Bluetooth. Here's how to use your PS4 controller with your PS3.

One quick note; you won't get rumble or SixAxis once it's set up as Bluetooth device but measure that up against happy hands playing Burnout Paradise and it's a fair price to pay.

1. Make sure your PS3 has been updated since 2014.
2. Go to 'Manage Bluetooth devices' in the 'Accessory settings' in the PS3 settings menu.
3. Opt for 'Register new Device' which will set the PS3 hunting for available devices.
4. Now hold down the Share and PS buttons simultaneously on your DualShock 4 until the light bar flashes. This pops it into Bluetooth pairing mode.
5. The PS3 should recognise the controller as the catchy 'Wireless Controller' which you can select.
6. Voila! Your PS4 controller works on your PS3 with the majority of games.

One thing to remember is that you'll have to re-pair your DS4 with your PS4 when you go back to current generation hardware. You'll also probably want a PS3 controller on hand to use the PS button to get back to the XMB as the PS4 controller's version doesn't work.

Is There an Alternative Button on a QWERTY Keyboard for the PS Button on the PS3?

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) console is an entertainment device from Sony that offers gaming, movie viewing and much more. Typically, you interact with the PS3 using a controller, but there are other peripherals you can use. One option is a keyboard, which in many contexts is much more convenient than a controller. In many cases the Windows key, when present, corresponds to the PS button on the PS3 controller.

Using a Keyboard

Sometimes it's just more convenient to use a keyboard than a controller. If you spend a lot of time typing in website names or if you want to type out and send a message to a PlayStation Network friend, a keyboard can save you a lot of time. The PS3 is able to connect to many commercially available USB and Bluetooth keyboards; you often can just plug it in and start using it. You can use not only wired keyboards, but also wireless keyboards that have their own receiver. Obviously, if you use a Bluetooth keyboard, you must pair it with the PS3 like any other Bluetooth device.

Corresponding Keys

The Letters and numbers on the keyboard correspond to the letters and numbers of the on-screen keyboard, when present. Also, you can press the "Page Up" keys and the "Page Down" keys to scroll up and scroll down, much like you would with the joysticks. The arrow keys correspond to the directional pad on the controller, and the "Home" and "End" keys move to the top and bottom of any Web pages you're viewing. The Windows key, if you have one, corresponds to the PS button in certain contexts.

When You Can't Use the Windows Key

Often you can access the XMB menu from other content by pressing the Windows key, just like PS button. When you're viewing photos or movies, and when you're using the Web browser, you can press the Windows key to access the XMB menu. The same goes for when you view the "Online Instruction Manuals," since they're viewed in the browser. If you're in the PlayStation Store and press the key, the PS3 will ask you if you want to exit the store. In a few contexts, the Windows key brings the same response as the PS button, but only to deny any action. This includes when the PS3 asks you to wait and when you're downloading updates.

When You Can Use the Windows Key

You can never use the Windows key to turn on or turn off the PS3 like you can with the PS button; if you hold down the Windows button, nothing will happen. Also, you will get no response whether you press and hold down or just click the Windows key while playing a game, while, of course, the PS button would bring you to the XMB menu or an option screen during a game. The PS3 also does not respond if you press the Windows key when the Netflix application is open.

How to Sync Your PS3 Controller

What to Know

  • To sync to PS3, turn on PS3 > connect USB to controller > connect other end to PS3 > press PS button > wait for lights to stop flashing.
  • When a PS3 controller won’t sync, turn controller over > locate reset button access hole > insert paperclip into hole and hold for 2 seconds.
  • You can also connect PS3 controller to Windows and macOS systems.

This article explains how to sync a PS3 controller. Instructions apply to official PS3 controllers from Sony. Support for third party controllers is mixed, especially controllers that require a separate dongle.

How to Sync a Controller to a Playstation 3 Console

To sync a PS3 controller with a PlayStation 3 console you will need a mini USB cable. Sony recommends using the cable provided with the system. If you have trouble syncing with a third-party cable, try using a different cable. Most third-party cables work well, but there are some that do not.

Here's how to sync a PS3 controller to a PlayStation 3 console:

  1. Turn on your PlayStation 3.

  2. Connect a mini USB cable to your controller.

  3. Connect the other end of the cable to your PS3.

  4. Push the PlayStation button in the middle of the controller to turn it on.

  5. Wait for the lights on the controller to stop flashing.

  6. Once the lights have stopped flashing, unplug the mini USB cable from the controller. Your PS3 controller is now ready to use.

If the controller isn't charged, leave it plugged in to finish charging.

What to Do When a PS3 Controller Won't Sync

In some cases, you may try to sync your PS3 controller and find that it does not work. This can usually be fixed by resetting the controller and then attempting to sync it again. If it still does not sync after a reset, you may have a battery or hardware problem.

Here's how to reset a PS3 controller:

  1. Turn the controller over, so the buttons and analog sticks are facing down.

  2. Locate the reset button access hole.

  3. Insert a paperclip, pin, or thin nail into the reset button access hole to push the reset button. Hold it down for at least two seconds.

When the reset button is depressed, you should feel a click. If you do not feel a click, you may have missed the button.

  4. Remove the paperclip and attempt to sync the controller again.

If your controller still won't sync or turn on, it may be defective or the battery may be dead.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to Windows

While PS3 controllers were designed for use with PlayStation 3 consoles, you can also use them with Windows PC. To connect a PS3 controller to a Windows computer, you need to install several software packages and drivers from Microsoft and use a free program called SCP ToolKit.

While SCP ToolKit is no longer in development, it works with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

The following frameworks, packages, and runtimes are required:

If you have Windows 7, you also need to download and install the Xbox 360 controller driver.

You will also need a mini USB controller to connect the controller to your computer.

Using the SCP ToolKit to connect a PS3 controller to a Windows computer takes over the Bluetooth connection. You will be unable to connect any other Bluetooth devices. If you use other Bluetooth devices, you should consider buying a separate Bluetooth dongle for your PS3 controller to use.

  1. If your PlayStation 3 is located anywhere near your computer, unplug it so your controller doesn't accidentally connect to it.

  2. Reset your PS3 controller by inserting a paperclip into the reset button hole located on the back of the controller.

  3. Press the PlayStation button on your controller to turn it on.

  4. Using a mini USB cable, connect the controller to your computer.

  5. Download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package, Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Runtime, Microsoft DirectX Runtime, and the Xbox 360 controller driver if you have Windows 7.

  6. Download and install the SCP Toolkit.

  7. Launch the SCP Toolkit Driver installer program.

  8. Select Next.

  9. Wait for your controller to show up, select Initialize all connected devices, then select Next.

  10. Select initialize all connected devices, then select Next.

  11. Select Install virtual Xbox 360 controller driver, then select Next.

  12. Select Install Windows Service, then select Next.

  13. Select Finish. Once the installation procedure is complete, your PS3 controller will be ready to use with your Windows computer.

PS3 controllers are old, and the SCP Toolkit program is no longer in active development. If it does not work with your particular configuration, there may be a compatibility issue that is unlikely to be fixed due to the age of the hardware.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to a Mac

You can also use a PS3 controller with your Mac. You must be running macOS Snow Leopard or later and have Bluetooth enabled. You do not need any additional software or drivers, but you do need a mini USB cable to connect your PS3 controller to your Mac.

Here's how to connect a PS3 controller to a Mac:

  1. If your PlayStation 3 is located anywhere near your Mac, unplug it to prevent your controller from accidentally connecting to it.

  2. Reset your PS3 controller by inserting a paperclip into the reset button hole located on the back of the controller.

  3. Make sure that your Mac has Bluetooth turned on. If you are not sure how to do this, consult our guide to using Bluetooth on a Mac.

  4. Connect your PS3 controller to your Mac with a mini USB cable.

If your controller isn't charged, leave it plugged in for a while to charge before you proceed.

  5. Press the PlayStation button on the controller to turn it on.

  6. Unplug the controller.

  7. Look for your PS3 controller in the list of Bluetooth devices on your Mac.

  8. When prompted, enter the code 0000 and select Pair or Accept. Your PS3 controller is now connected and ready to use.
