Knowing how to tame a fox in Minecraft means you have the opportunity to gain a cute companion to take on your adventures, and who wouldn't want a foxy pet by their side? However, in order to tame a fox in Minecraft you'll have to do some work as you'll have to go looking for them at night and have some sweet berry to hand. Or in hand, even. Coming up we'll go through how to find a fox and tame it so you can have one of your very own.

Where to find a Fox in Minecraft

One thing to note about MInecraft foxes is that they’re nocturnal animals, which means that anyone looking to begin their search is going to have to do so when it’s dark. Of course, things get a little more dangerous when you’re around, so newcomers are going to want to make sure that they can fend off something that might want to turn your new pet into dinner before they go fox-searching.

Foxes can be found in taiga biomes at night, usually because they like nesting in leafy forests. You can find foxes in the following taiga biomes: taiga, giant tree taiga, and snow taiga biomes. You can also find them in taiga villages if those are kicking around your world. There’s a small chance for foxes to spawn as cubs, and if you’re in a snow taiga biome, then the foxes will be white instead of the classic russet with white tails.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft

So, night has fallen and you’ve found a fox but they keep scampering away from you. Like other skittish creatures in Minecraft, foxes are a little shy so you have to sneak to approach them. However, an easy way to bridge the gap between humankind and foxkind is to have some Sweet Berry on hand. They love this stuff, so make sure you’ve got a handful before sneaking up to them and interacting with the fox. Little hearts blooming overhead will indicate that they’ve received your gift.

Once you’ve been able to do this enough times - we found that four or so helpings of Sweet Berry did the trick - the happy critter will be tamed and will be your friend. If you feed two foxes in the same vicinity as each other Sweet Berries and tame them both, they have a chance to procreate! Foxes that trust you will also occasionally bring you things that they pick up in their mouths, and though we mostly received feathers, we’re sure that there are other cool items that they can fetch if given the chance.

Bred foxes in Minecraft are automatically tame

Wanting to tame an army of foxes in Minecraft would probably be a bit like chucking Sweet Berries into an animal-shaped vacuum if not for one simple save: any fox cub that’s the product of two tamed foxes will automatically be born tame. That’s right.

You only really have to use those Sweet Berries on the original breeding pair of foxes and once that’s done, their offspring will be automatically tame and warm up to you. We noticed that they were quick to scamper off once the sun rose, so you’re going to want to fence them in if keeping a large fox pack is something that you want to do. Fox cubs will stick close to their parents instead of following the player around, so you don’t have to worry about having a hanger-on while you’re knee-deep in bashing enemies. Foxes that are trusting enough will harm enemies who are harming you, though we would want to leave cubs out of it for now.

Now that you’ve got a better idea of how to tame a fox in Minecraft, all that’s left is to venture forth into the biomes of your choice and to pick up some loyal pets for yourself. Just arm yourself with Sweet Berries, patience, and supplies for some night-time scouting until you find these furry, soon-to-be friends.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft

Ten years on from its official launch, Minecraft has conquered the gaming world as the best-selling video game of all time and a pop culture phenomenon.

Players have built everything from the Eiffel Tower to Hogwarts and even the entirety of Middle Earth – but despite the name, users can do far more than just mining and crafting in the game.

Mobs a.k.a. mobile living entities roam the blocky biomes and while some are hostile, many can be interacted with and even tamed, including the elusive and adorable Minecraft Fox.

Here’s how to tame your very own fox – it’s a little harder than taming most of Minecraft’s many mobs.

Where do foxes spawn in Minecraft?

Mobs, of course, spawn naturally depending on the biome, with foxes spawning in the Taiga biomes. These cold forest biomes come in three varieties – normal, snowy and giant tree Taigas – with red foxes spawning at the normal Taigas and white foxes spawning at the snowy Taigas.

Foxes spawn here in groups of two to four, and there’s even a five per cent chance of finding a cute baby fox! However foxes are nocturnal animals that only spawn at night – so make sure you’re equipped to defend yourself. They’re also incredibly skittish, so make sure to sneak around them and bring plenty of their favourite food: sweet berries.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft

Wild foxes can’t be tamed – instead, you must convince foxes to breed Pokémon-style. This can be done by giving a sweet berry to a fox, and then giving another sweet berry to the fox you want it to mate with. After being given time to do their business, the foxes will produce a brand new fox who will be loyal to you. Breeding a red fox and a white fox will give a 50/50 chance of getting either colour – no crazy colour combinations unfortunately.

However, the fox cub will also want to follow its fellow fox friends, so you’ll have to separate them if you want the new fox to follow you only. This is simple enough – just attach a lead to your new pet and walk it away from all the other foxes, and in no time the mammal mob will be fully devoted to you.

Leads can be crafted using four string and one slimeball, and can also be found in the wild in jungle temples, desert pyramid chests, and dungeons, or from drops, breaking cobwebs, fishing, bartering, and cat gifts.

Tame foxes are incredibly loyal, and will even defend you from other mobs if they start attacking. However, they have been known to scamper off when the sun comes up – you may want to fence them in just in case.

Minecraft fox taming: how to tame a fox in Minecraft

Looking to learn how to tame a fox in Minecraft?Fox-taming in Minecraft can be a bit of a confusing task at first, but in reality it's quite straightforward: and you get an adorable little fox following you around at the end of it! Continue reading to learn how to find and tame foxes in Minecraft - including the rare snowy fox variety, which would look awesome wandering around a snow-covered castle.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft

To tame a Minecraft fox, you need to get two existing adult foxes to mate and procreate. Naturally spawned foxes cannot ever be fully tamed, but if you encourage two foxes to breed then their baby fox kit will be tame and fully loyal to you.

To get two adult foxes to breed, you have to feed one sweet berry to each fox. Wild foxes will run away if you walk or run towards them, so you have to sneak up to them in order to feed them.

A Minecraft screenshot of an adult fox and a baby fox looking up at the player.

Feeding an adult fox sweet berries will cause it to enter "love mode". This is how breeding works with all the breedable Minecraft mobs: feed them the right food and they'll enter "love mode". If two adult foxes in "love mode" are near enough to one another, they'll mate and produce a Fox kit. Once they do, this baby fox will be loyal to you and won't run away from you like normal foxes.

However, baby foxes will still have a tendency to follow their parents instead of you. If you don't want your baby fox's loyalty to be split, the best thing to do is to attach a lead to the baby fox and lead it far away from its parents. Once far enough away, the baby fox will have eyes only for you.

Where to find foxes in Minecraft

There are two types of foxes in Minecraft, and they both spawn in different biomes. Red foxes spawn inside Taiga and Giant Tree Taiga biomes, while white foxes spawn inside Snowy Taiga biomes. This shouldn't change when Minecraft 1.18 (which brings terrain changes, Dripstone, and the Warden) drops later this year.

Foxes will spawn in groups of 2-4, and each one has a 5% chance of spawning as a baby fox - but remember, none of them will ever be tame or loyal to you because they were all born wild.

Red and white foxes behave in exactly the same manner, and you can breed and tame them in the same way. The only difference is their colour, in much the same way as Axolotls vary in colour but remain functionally identical. If you breed a red fox with a white fox, then there is a 50% chance of the baby fox being either colour.

If you want more variance in the looks of foxes in Minecraft, your best bet is to dress up your world with a new Texture Pack or Shader Pack, or find a suitable Minecraft mod that does the trick for you.

How to tame a fox in 'Minecraft' and get the game's cutest NPC to follow you

  • You can tame a fox in "Minecraft" by breeding two wild foxes.
  • The baby fox they spawn will automatically be tamed, but will follow its parents until you lead it away.
  • To breed wild foxes in "Minecraft," you'll need to enclose them in a pen and then feed them sweet berries.
  • Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

Foxes have been part of Minecraft since 2018, and it's one of the game's cutest "mobs" — the game's term for its NPCs.

Like most animal mobs, foxes can be tamed so they'll follow and obey you. However, unlike those other animals, you can't simply convince any random fox to like you. Instead, you'll need to breed a new fox into existence.

Here's how to tame foxes in "Minecraft," whether playing in Survival mode or Creative mode.

How to tame a fox in 'Minecraft'

To tame a fox, you'll need to make two wild foxes have a child. Here's how to do it.

Find and capture two foxes

First you'll need to find your wild foxes.

Foxes can be found in the taiga biome and taiga biome only, with the small caveat that they might wander to adjacent biomes. The taiga biome is characterized by its tall, green spruce trees. There's a few variations of the taiga biome, including snowy taigas that feature white foxes.

An untamed fox is a fickle, skittish creature. You'll want to search for them during the day, when most of them will be asleep.

The moment you see a curled up, conked-out fox, make sure you start crouching right away. You'll use the shift key to crouch on a computer, or your controller-specific crouch button if playing on a console.

Emma Witman/Insider

Now, still crouching, build a pen around the fox to trap it. You can use any block to make your pen, but you'll want to make the walls tall — at least three blocks. This will make sure it can't escape. You can't stop crouching until the fox is cordoned in its pen. The moment you uncrouch, a fight-or-flight switch flips in the foxes and they'll run away.

If you see two foxes near each other, that's even better — trap them both in the same pen.

4 How to tame a fox in Minecraft
Emma Witman/Insider

This is rare, though, so you'll probably need to find and trap the foxes separately. Once you've done this, you'll need to connect the two traps with a wall of blocks.

However, if the foxes you find are pretty far apart, and you don't want to take on a large construction gig, you can use a boat. Place a boat in front of a fox, and when it walks into it, it'll be trapped inside. You can then row the boat (even across land) to the other fox, and pen them both in.

Regardless which option you choose, you ultimately want to end up with a fairly tight enclosure to hold the two foxes.

Quick tip: If you're playing in Creative mode — or can change your gamemode to Creative — you can spawn an infinite amount of foxes at any time. Just find the Fox Spawn Egg item in your infinite inventory and use it on any free space. You'll still need to trap at least two of them, though.

6 How to tame a fox in Minecraft
Emma Witman/Insider

Feed the foxes sweet berries

Whether you've spent the last hour wrangling foxes, or simply threw down a few Fox Spawn Eggs, you should now have two adult foxes penned in. If you caught a baby fox, wait for it to age up.

Get close to the two adult foxes, and equip a sweet berry. These come from the green-and-red bushes you occasionally see which slow and hurt you when you walk through them. They're fairly commonplace in the taiga, if you haven't gathered any already.

Feed berries to both foxes by using it on them. If you're struggling to get near enough to feed the foxes, make sure you're crouching.

10 How to tame a fox in Minecraft
Emma Witman/Insider

Equip the sweet berries in your hotbar, and then approach the fox and use the berries on it to feed it a berry. If you're struggling to get near enough to feed the foxes, make sure you're crouching.

Upon feeding sweet berries to both foxes, they'll immediately breed a baby fox.

This baby fox is your golden egg: They'll be sweet and docile, unlike their parents, who will still go berserk when you release the crouch key. This is your tamed fox.

12 How to tame a fox in Minecraft
Emma Witman/Insider

However, you're not done yet. Although the fox is docile, it's still not under your control.

Get the baby fox to stop following its parents

While the new baby fox might fall far from the tree in terms of attitude, if you leave it be, it'll always stay with its parents. This means that if they run from you, it'll run too.

You can fix this by attaching a lead to the baby fox, and walking it away from its parents. You can craft a lead by combining string and a slime ball, or randomly find one in a chest throughout the world.

Emma Witman/Insider

Attach the lead by equipping it and using it on the baby fox. From there, you can gently lead him away to begin a new life with you. Once you're a few chunks away, it'll forget about its parents and stop following them.

Congratulations on earning your first tamed fox. And once you're there, rinse and repeat: By continuing the same breeding process, you'll soon have a whole brood of obedient fox friends.

To keep track of your new tame foxes, it's also a good idea to give the tame ones Name Tags. Learn the ins and outs of Minecraft's Name Tags in our handy guide.

Minecraft Fox Dance - I'm Not Cute Anymore? - Part 1

How to tame a Minecraft fox

Want to tame a Minecraft fox? Even though they are pretty sneaky, you may have spied one of these cute critters on your travels. But did you know you can befriend these bushy-tailed creatures? All it takes is a little determination and some skillful planning.

After all, foxes in Minecraft are wary and run away if you try to get near them. However, there are some things you can do if you want to tame one for yourself. In this Minecraft fox guide we'll walk you through what you need, including where to find them, and how to become firm friends.

Where does a Minecraft fox spawn?

Foxes in Minecraft are a little harder to find than some of the more common beasties, especially as they are nocturnal: you need to search Taiga biomes to locate them. These are the colder forests that you can find on the surface, and they come in three different varieties; normal, snowy, and giant tree Taigas.

Foxes spawn in these areas in groups of two to four, and they have a 5% chance of spawning as baby foxes. Red foxes are found in the normal Taigas and white foxes within the snowy ones, so keep that in mind if you’re after a specific colour.

How to tame a fox in Minecraft

First you need to make a brand new fox—basically, you need to convince foxes to breed. All you need to do this is to give one sweet berry to one fox, then give another sweet berry to the fox you want it to mate with. Then wait for them to breed. The freshly-hatched fox will be loyal to you.

The problem is it'll also want to follow the other foxes. So if you want it to follow you, you'll need to get it away from the other foxes. The best way to do this is to attach a lead to it and walk away from other groups of the furry fauna, then it’ll only have eyes for you. Make sure you look after it now that you’ve taken it into your care.

While you can find leads out in the wild, you’ll probably have to craft one using four string and one slimeball. Also, if you choose to breed a white and a red fox, then their baby has a 50% chance of being either white or red, whereas two of the same colour will produce the same type of cub.
