NC State Fair attendance down by 70k over 1st 3 days compared to 2019

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Attendance for the first three days at the North Carolina State Fair is down compared to recent years, with about 70,000 fewer people attending the first three days compared to 2019.

“We really didn’t know what to expect this year, we know that this is not the right year for some people, but we’re excited to be open and feel that those that come are having a great time,” said Kent Yelverton, manager of the North Carolina State Fair.

This year’s opening day attendance of 27,209 was the lowest opening-day attendance since 1994. Saturday’s attendance at 83,737 is the lowest for that day since 1997 when it rained for part of the day.

Fair business is still popping at PT’s Prairie Gold Kettle Corn. The owner Paul Gagne said he doesn’t think his business was impacted by attendance numbers.

“We did have something in mind, and we met our goals,” Gagne said.

Lobster Dogs of Raleigh has been in business for about two years, Megan Roaden said the fair’s been a big boost.

“I say we may have expected more because of how busy it is in past years, but we’re still really happy with the way it’s turned out for us,” Roaden said.

She estimates they did about 50 percent more business on Sunday over Saturday and 100 percent more business than the first day of the fair.

“It started off a little slow but today was definitely a peak day for us,” Roaden said.

Sunday’s attendance numbers are not out yet, but fairgoers tell CBS 17 the crowd size did not feel different from past years. The second Saturday is typically the fair’s busiest day.

North Carolina State Fair Coverage

COVID Protocols

The North Carolina State Fair is encouraging those who plan on visiting the fair this fall to get vaccinated. The N.C. State Fair will not require proof of vaccination to attend the fair.

Free COVID-19 vaccinations will be available at the fair this year. Cary United Methodist Church is partnering with Wake County Public Health, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and FEMA to offer the vaccine in its restaurant space located near the end of restaurant row by Dorton Arena.

The fair is also recommending that anyone who attends the event who is not vaccinated be tested for COVID-19 three to five days after attending the fair.

New attractions and food

There are two new rides this year - the Itsy Bitsy Spider Wheel and the Sky Hawk.

The N.C. Public House, which showcases locally-made beers, wines, ciders and sodas, will be moved to a new location in the South Dorton Arena lobby. Tickets can be purchased for two servings of wine, cider or beer. Wine servings are 3 ounces each, and beer or cider servings are 8 ounces each.

Some new food vendors coming to the fair will sell lobster rolls, specialty shaved ice, stuffed avocados, homemade cookies and more.

New policies, changes this year

To keep fairgoers safe, organizers have made several changes, many of which have nothing to do with the pandemic.

For the first time, there will be a clear bag policy. Bags of any size will be allowed, as long as they are clear, organizers said, noting that wristlets, diaper bags and medical equipments bags are exceptions to the rule but will be inspected before entry. The clear bag policy does apply to purses.

State Fair officials say that attendees can either bring a clear bag to the fair or put the contents of their bag into a clear bag while going through security, then put those items back in their personal bag afterward.

There will also be no concerts inside Dorton Arena this year; instead, 105 shows featuring all-local artists will be held at the "Live and Local Waterfall Stage" and at the Heritage Circle Bluegrass Stage. The decision was not related to COVID, instead based on the need to use the arena for other vendors.

Free parking is available on State Fair, Carter-Finley Football Stadium and PNC Arena properties. Fairgoers are encouraged to take Wade Avenue to the Edwards Mill Extension to park in these lots. There may be exceptions if events are scheduled at Carter-Finley or PNC Arena. Recreational vehicles are not allowed to remain in the parking spaces managed by the State Fair between the hours of midnight and 8 a.m.

Shuttle options: The N.C. State Fair offers free off-site parking at the corner of Edwards Mill and Reedy Creek (4501 Reedy Creek Road, Raleigh) with free shuttles transporting you a spot just across from Gate 8 on Trinity Road. Shuttles will run continuously. Drop off and pick up will be at Gate B Carter Finley Stadium. The Reedy Creek parking hours are Thursday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. until one hour after gates close; and Friday, Oct. 15 - Sunday, Oct. 24: 8 a.m. until one hour after gates close.

Park and Ride - Park and Ride buses originate in Garner, at 1205 Timber Drive East, and in Raleigh at 5959 Triangle Town Blvd. A shuttle will depart every 30 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to midnight. A $5 charge applies.

Tom muttered, lips parted. And Tamarka obediently parted her lips with her hands, froze in anticipation. Shuddered, as soon as I touched my tongue, licking between the small lips, twisted it backwards. And I.

Now discussing:

Sink, Lera calmly answered. And what did not drown, he said again in the same tone. Yes, I had a good teacher yesterday, you do not accidentally know him, asked the serious Lera. No, I dont know, but we can ask about him on the other side, swam back. Lera got cold in the cold water, and the fear of drowning brought her to her senses.
