Honda Rancher

The Honda Rancher is an All-Terrain Vehicle manufactured by Honda, and is one of the model line of ATV's. Currently there are two generations of the TRX420 which differ significantly in design and features.

TRX350 (2000 - 2006)[edit]

The first model to bear the Rancher name was the TRX350. Stepping up from the smaller TRX300, Honda introduced the Rancher 350 to be a better model to be in between the smaller Recon and Larger Foreman.

First Generation TRX420 Rancher

Following the previous Rancher ATV models (TRX350 & TRX400) Honda completely redesigned the Rancher line to improve all aspects of the ATV. Changes included a bigger and more powerful 420cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine, electronic Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI), liquid cooling, and the ability to change from 2WD to 4WD on equipped models.

For the 2007 model year the TRX420 was only available in four configurations being either 2WD or 4WD and shifting with a manual foot shift or using Honda's Electronic Shift Program (ESP). However in 2008 Honda introduced the TRX420FA (4WD Automatic) also known as the Rancher AT, as well as electronic power steering. Although the previous generation rancher was available with an automatic transmission, the TRX420 AT and the TRX400 transmissions differed greatly. The previous automatic transmission known as the Hondamatic Transmission utilized oil pressure and a swash plate to constantly change output ratios, therefore eliminating the need to shift. The new automatic transmission utilized a simpler dual clutch design, allowing for quick and smooth shifting while being more reliable than the Hondamatic. Although no changes were made to the engine, the transmission was significantly larger due to the dual clutch design, causing the FA models and the standard models to have different oil filters and oil capacities.

The standard suspension design for the TRX420 utilized a swingarm with a solid axle driving power to the rear wheels. The TRX420FA however came standard with independent rear suspension, providing more ground clearance, better traction, and overall a smoother ride.

TRX420 (2014 - present)[edit]

The 2014 model year brought a redesigned rancher on the market. Although the engine and transmission remained unchanged, most of the ATV had been updated or redesigned. Changes included a new body and frame, a new in-tank fuel pump design, an updated instrument cluster, and later on a new utility rack design. Due to the fuel pump being moved to inside the fuel tank, the filler cap was also moved and the fuel shut-off valve was removed. For 2014 the Rancher AT was only available in the first generation design. It was not until 2015 when the Rancher AT would be updated along with the standard models. Similar to the previous design, the TRX420FA came standard with independent rear suspension.

For the 2020 model year, Honda redesigned the utility racks to be utilized with the new Honda Pro-Connect™ accessory line. Along with the new rack design, the front fender was altered to fit a storage compartment under the front rack.

The Honda Rancher 350 was a follow-up model to the FourTrax 300™ and belonged to the same lineup of multipurpose quads believed to be among Honda’s most significant ATVs. Often confused with a Foreman, the more compact Rancher brings together a perfect balance of size, handling, power, and capacity. This mid-size brute is very practical and handy and is a clever substitute for a tractor that costs exponentially more for farmers to procure and maintain.

  • Engine – The engine is powered by a four-stroke, single-cylinder OHV engine, which is mounted longitudinally, making more room for the rider and reducing power loss for the drivetrain. It has a bore of 78.5 millimeters and a stroke of 68 millimeters. The engine displacement is 329 cubic centimeters delivered by a 32-millimeter Keihin carburetor, and its compression ratio is 8:7:1. Fuel tank capacity is 3.4 gallons/12.9 liters.
  • Drivetrain – Power is transferred via a five-speed transmission inclusive of a reverse gear. It is available with the Electric Shift Program (ESP) that allows its part-time 4WD system to switch on and off with push-button ease.
  • Ignition – The Honda Rancher has an electronic Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) with an electric start system and auxiliary recoil pull starter for backup. The Good and the Bad

A lot of positive things can be said about the Rancher 350. Its reliability, shiftless transmission, and SUV-inspired styling make it an all-time favorite among farmers, hobbyists, and sports enthusiasts. It has smooth handling, and its ergonomic design fits almost all weights and sizes. The footpegs make for a comfortable yet sound safety measure. The Honda Rancher 350 requires virtually no maintenance. It’s fun to ride, very predictable on the road, and convenient to operate. It’s also fantastic on and off-trail, and its traction and stability more than compensate for the width of its tires.

But despite being reliable, the Honda Rancher 350 has its fair share of hiccups. For one, owners warn about steering problems when riding along at 5-10 mph – the vehicle takes off in the desired direction too quickly that it can wreck the rider if not cautious. This issue can be easily solved either by adjusting the tie rods to give a lot of toe-out and prevent the steering from being touchy, or checking lower ball joints and uppers for damage.

Another problem is that it cuts out at half throttle and engine blubbers in the process. Some drivers have removed the air box to solve the issue, but veterans advise against this. Not only is this a Band-Aid fix, but doing this will also pose a risk for your vehicle as water can get in the carburetor or worse, the motor. Veterans recommend replacing the spark plug instead of taking off the ATV’s breather. Other reported issues are ticking/tapping noises, wiggles in the piston, and smoking.

This is one of the primary features that set the Honda Rancher 420 apart during day to day usage. The transmission determines the kind of extra features your machine will end up having. So far the Honda Rancher has three different types of transmissions. There is the manual or foot-shift transmission, the electric shift (ES) or the Electric shift program (ESP) and finally, there is the Dual clutch transmission (DCT) or the automatic transmission. These different transmissions are found in different Honda Rancher 420 models and is the focal feature that makes them completely different from each other. Below is a deep dive into the different types of transmissions.

1. Manual or Foot shift Transmission

This type of transmission is rare, and so it is hard to come by a Honda Rancher 420 that utilizes it. This doesn’t mean that they are extinct. There are some few of these ranchers around, and there are also riders who have mastered their art and can perfectly maneuver the tracks incredibly well without any problems. The transmission is usually semi-automatic, and it doesn’t come with a clutch. This is why most riders tend to avoid the Honda Rancher 420 with this transmission. One of the most common Honda Rancher 420 model with the manual or foot-shift transmission is the TRX420FM1 model.

2. Electronic Shift(ES) or Electronic Shift Program(ESP)

This is one of the most popular transmissions that is preferred by a number of riders. Unlike the manual gearbox, it ensures that you have an easy time shifting gears. This is a type of transmission that you will need if you are a rider who loves making sporty style turns to entertain the crowd. It can be used by someone who has a leg problem or someone who has often finds it hard using legs to shift gears.

DCT is the best transmission designed to increase the response of the Honda Rancher 420, reduce lagging of the engine and also ensure that the rider is always comfortable riding.

DCT also makes use of a great technology that has a two-piece main shaft and two clutches. The first clutch drives the initial main shaft gears. They consist of the first, third and fifth gears. The second main shaft is placed over the initial main shaft and makes use of the second clutch. It is composed of the second, fourth and reverse gears.

The stock Honda Rancher 420 has a top speed of approximately 55mph. A rev limiter prevents the ATV from going faster. These speeds, however, can change depending on the rider’s weight, the nature of the landscape and the Honda Rancher 420 model you are riding. With a superior model, a lighter rider and a flat terrain you can reach the Rancher 420’s top speed.

What is Honda Rancher 420’s oil capacity?

The Rancher 420 can hold up to 2 quarts. It’s best to add a little less than this, let it run for a minute, and then check the oil level before adding more. Do not overfill! It’s also a good idea to perform an oil and filter change regularly as well as before you plan to leave for an extended trip. Proper maintenance is key to keeping your Honda Rancher working well for a long time.

Where is the VIN located on Honda Rancher 420?

Honda Rancher 420s typically have their VIN located between the headlights and right at the center of the front frame. Older models may have it near the left foot area on the frame and others may have it on the frame opposite of where the exhaust is. Note: if your Rancher 420 has a winch you may need to partially remove it to access the VIN.

Popular performance mods for the Honda Rancher 420

Yes, there is a performance series exhaust that can boost effective horsepower and torque. I don’t recommend trying to add many performance parts besides the exhaust and tires, however, or you will likely reduce the lifespan of the engine and/or transmission. It’s a great quad right out of the crate, stock.
