The new skipping stunts helping us get a jump on lockdown fitness

Some of us have regressed to a sort of second childhood lately – spending as much time as possible in our pyjamas, having cereal for dinner because we just cannot bear to cook another meal, and for those of us back in the ancestral home, indulging in some extremely juvenile sibling bickering. 

But there’s a more positive activity that has re-emerged from childhood – skipping, for both fun and fitness. The equipment is slicker and more streamlined than the woolly, wood-handled ropes of the playground, though relatively inexpensive, and thanks to pioneers inventing new tricks and moves, it also has a new-found street cred. 

Among the “jumpers” amassing a following on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok are the gravity-defying Jimmy Reynolds (@jimmysaysrelax) and Mimi Youss (@mimiyouu), posting everything from tutorials to mind-bending stunts. Cardiff-based influencer Dina Tokio (@dinatokio), who took up skipping during the first national lockdown, gets hundreds of thousands of views for her progress videos on Instagram. 

Mesmerising videos

Lauren Flymen, from St Albans, was working from home in March 2020 when she first picked up a rope to fill the fitness gap.

Less than a year later, she has a following of 170,000 people on Instagram under her alias Lauren Jumps, her own range of ropes and various brand partnerships.

And if you think watching someone repetitively jump rope might be dull, her mesmerising videos prove to be anything but.

“I had seen people doing some footwork and I thought that looked cool enough,” she says. “It wasn’t until I got my rope and started searching hashtags on Instagram that I discovered this whole world of advanced tricks.”

The tricks range from simple moves like double-unders (where the rope revolves twice for every jump) and side-to-sides, to more advanced trickery like wrapping the rope around your body and legs and mic release – letting the rope fly out of your hands and catching it on a turn, maybe not one to attempt anywhere near your flat-screen TV.

Lauren makes it look easy, but the more advanced moves take time and constant repetition to perfect. “The most difficult part is being persistent enough to keep drilling a skill over and over – continuously whipping yourself and resetting the rope to try again and again,” she says.

“I have always been quite coordinated and did dance as a child but most of the things I can do with a rope now, I couldn’t even do without a rope before I started.”

The fitness benefits of skipping sound almost too good to be true – it’s perhaps no wonder it’s beloved by everyone from boxers to Crossfitters.

“Skipping is inexpensive, versatile, can be done anywhere and the rope takes up no room at home or in your bag,” says Declan Taylor, head boxing coach at BLOK London. “It’s not an accident that boxers have been skipping for decades due to a long list of benefits. You can vary the intensity too, meaning it can be used as both a warm-up or as a high-intensity training stimulus which also makes it a great option for non-boxers as well. And once you’ve learned the basics, the opportunities for progression are endless.”

The combination of co-ordination and repetition also benefits the brain, with some even describing it as a moving meditation. “‘Skipping plays such a strong role not only in cardiovascular enhancement and coordination, but also cognitive stimulus,” says Gary Logan, head boxing coach at London gym BXR.

“A great example of a workout would be a three-minute skipping round consisting of one minute of digging your heels on alternate feet, concentrating on working your calves, followed by one minute of alternate high knee rises and one minute of running on the spot at speed.”

GETTING STARTED

The beauty of skipping is its versatility – you can take your workout indoors or outdoors, depending on your rope and the amount of space you have. 

The kit:

The range of ropes out there can be overwhelming, from speed ropes to weighted and even beaded.  Keon Ghaharian of UK online store Dope Ropes (doperopes.co.uk) says for beginners it’s best to go for a rope that’s around 3ft longer than your height, and adjustable so that you can shorten it as you progress with your technique. “I would advise beginners to get a beaded jump rope, which gives you enough feedback and feel, so that you can feel the rope moving around you to get your technique and rhythm right.”

Beaded ropes: Great for beginners, mid-weight, won’t tangle as easily, but can be noisy. Can be used indoors or outdoors.

Weighted: Slower than other ropes, so can be good for working on form and timing. Can help to strengthen arms and shoulders. 

Speed: Lightweight and cut through the air quickly for jumpers looking to build speed and for more intense conditioning. Made of thin vinyl, best for indoor use.  

Mats: A jump rope mat can protect your rope – and you – from wear and tear. Some skippers can be prone to injuries like shin splints, so a mat can soften the impact. 

Footwear: As with any sport, the right shoe is key. Look for trainers with a cushioned sole and good support and stability.

Technique for beginners: 

Keep bounces 1-2 inches off the ground, staying on the balls of your feet with a slight bend in your knees to minimise impact

Keep elbows close to your body near your hips, using wrist rotation to control the rope

Posture – keep your head up, shoulders back and relaxed. Avoid flicking your legs backwards to prevent injury

Take it slow – begin with five minute sessions, then build up to longer stints as your fitness improves

Jennifer Garner just proved jumping rope is not just for CrossFit fanatics or double-dutch-loving fifth graders. The 47-year-old actress showed off her fancy rope skills in a new Instagram workout video.

In the vid, Jennifer, wearing a sleek head-to-toe black 'fit, starts with some standard jumps. Then, she takes it to the next level and completes double-unders. She makes the intense move, turning the rope twice beneath her feet for every single jump, look like a total breeze. The rope is moving in hyper speed, but I'm pretty sure I counted 10 straight double-unders. (I, a former competitive jump roper, am super impressed.)

It takes strength and coordination to knock out this explosive exercise. “While classic jumping rope and double-unders are very similar in appearance, when done correctly, the tempo, timing, required coordination, and benefits are actually quite different,” David Newman, certified L-1 CrossFit trainer and founder of CEO of Rx Smart Gear, the go-to rope brand of many CrossFit Games athletes, previously told Women's Health.

Form is key to successful double-unders. “Make sure you keep your head in a neutral position with your eyes forward or down at a 45 degree angle as you jump,” says Newman. This keeps your head in-line with your spine and prevents the position of your noggin’ from throwing off your balance. At the same time, keep your elbows bent and core engaged. The move is actually so complex, newbies should start by practicing their jump technique sans rope before moving to the real deal.

Jennifer is no stranger to hardcore training. She has worked with Simone De La Rue, trainer and founder of Body by Simone, for years. De La Rue took Jennifer's training to a whole new level while preparing her for the badass role in Peppermint. ICYMI, she looked like an action figure, and still does several years later.

Candace Cameron Bure is jumping into a new fitness journey, and she’s sharing her progress with the world. In a Jan. 19 Instagram post, the 44-year-old showed off her jump rope skills—they’re pretty impressive, and she plans on getting better.

“I’m starting a jump rope journey today,” she captioned the gallery of videos. “I’ve been jumping basic rope for about 5 years for cardio with Kira [Stokes]. However, I really want to learn steps and get good! Coordination is tough for me at times.”

In the first clip, she successfully skipped rope, rhythmically bouncing from her back foot to front. “This first video may seem so simple,” she added. “But watch in the other slides what it took to figure it out.” The subsequent clips show the actress taking it slow, practicing the footwork without the rope, and stumbling here and there.

On Instagram Stories, she practiced more moves—crossovers and rotating her arms in front—and yes, her feet caught the rope a few times. “Practice makes progress,” she wrote on the clip. “And sometimes it hurts a little.” Then she tried combining both of her new steps—crossovers, and what her trainer Stokes called “fancy feet”—and there was more tripping. “Keep trying!” she wrote.

Fans and followers were inspired by her agility and determination. “You’re great!! Join the jump rope craze and burn more calories than jogging

Flymen, who lives in Saint Albans, England, was furloughed from her sales manager position in April 2020. In her newfound free time, she discovered the jump rope community on Instagram and was inspired to give it a try.
"I stumbled across this whole world of people doing stuff I've never seen before, like all of the freestyle tricks," said 29-year-old Flymen. There are nearly 1 million #jumprope posts on Instagram, and more than 896 million views on TikTok videos with the caption #jumprope.
She created her Instagram account to tap into the jump rope community and document her journey as Lauren Jumps, posting her first video on April 17.
"I started sharing videos of me learning and then that gained momentum. It picked up quite quickly and people started following me, wanting tips from me. So, I started sharing tutorials," Flymen said.
She went from performing basic crossovers to gravity-defying freestyle moves with fast, fancy footwork, attracting more than 286,000 followers over the course of one year.
Flymen is part of a growing pandemic trend, with people who have been shut out of gyms and exercise classes looking for low-tech ways to stay fit. Unlike the jump rope fun in the schoolyard or the competitive double Dutch teams, pandemic jump rope fans had to jump alone or in their social bubbles.
Influencers like Flymen and Mimi Youss and Ghadi Abboud, however, have helped inspire and motivate the legions of new enthusiasts.
Businesses are taking note: Crossrope and Elevate Rope, two companies that sell jump ropes, reported record-breaking sales last year. An Elevate Rope spokesperson reported that revenue increased by 240% during 2020, while Crossrope told CNN it had $26 million in sales in 2020 -- four times the sales of the previous year.

The benefits of jumping rope

Jumping rope is a good exercise routine, experts say.
"If you're looking for a cardio workout that's really efficient, I would say jump roping absolutely is that," said CNN fitness contributor Dana Santas, who is a wellness expert and a strength and conditioning coach.
Jump roping is a vigorous, calorie-burning workout that works your whole body, Santas said. As a coach in professional sports, she incorporates jump roping into high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, and warm-ups.
Just 10 minutes of jumping rope is as efficient of a cardio workout as 30 minutes of running, according to a 2013 study led by John A. Baker at Arizona State University. Jumping can also increase bone density, according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Flymen said jump roping is the hardest cardio workout she has done. But the biggest benefit has been for her mental health. It's an exciting and satisfying way to escape the stresses of everyday life, she said.
"If you're going on a run, you think about other stuff in your life and problems," Flymen said. "Whereas when I go out and jump rope, you just focus on that. You are properly in the zone. You can't think about anything else because it involves so much of your mind to actually do these tricks."
Jump roping is like meditation for Elevate Rope founder and CEO Geraldo Alken.
"When you're jumping rope, you need to be present, in the moment. If you're not present, you're going to trip up," he said. "When I pick up this rope, I just enter some kind of new realm, another world. It's just me and this rope and my music, and you can just let go of everything around you. And that's just the best feeling."
Before jumping into this high-intensity meditation, Santas warns that people who aren't in good shape could get injured if they don't ease into it and warm up properly.
"There's no way to do jump roping that isn't vigorous-intensity because if you slow the rope down too much it's not going to work right. So, it's vigorous right out of the gate," she said.
Both Santas and Flymen recommend beginners start with a short session, like five to 10 minutes. "People think jump roping looks easy but it's not at all," Flymen said.
After a year of jumping, Flymen decided not to return to her sales job and is making money sharing her jump rope journey on social media. Her lockdown hobby became her job.
"I'm disappointed I didn't discover this sooner, and I just want everyone to know what they can achieve with jump rope," Flymen said.

By watching social media timelines get saturated with videos of people practicing their ‘rope flows’ and challenging each other to do tricks, it seems that would be the case.
Apparently, as limiting quarantine measures continue to stretch on and people remain fearful of going outside, their attentions revisited the long-overlooked but familiar fitness tool which is the jump rope. This time, however, it’s not just seen as a convenient alternative to running or biking outdoors – it has risen to popularity.
