The 2017 Subaru WRX will feature an updated EyeSight safety package, along with automatic headlights and auto-up front windows. Expect a redesigned WRX and WRX STI based on the new 2017 Impreza, for 2018.
Vehicle Summary
The 2017 Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport sedan that's priced similarly to the rear-drive, two-door BRZ in WRX form, though the WRX STI model offers more performance at a higher price. Both WRX models get power from direct injection turbo flat-fours, 2.0 liters for the WRX and 2.5 liters for the WRX STI. The WRX offers a manual or automatic transmission, and the WRX STI is only available with a manual.
Overview
For 2017, the Subaru WRX sport sedan receives slight updates, including new tricot headliners on all models in the lineup. Auto on/off headlights have been added to the base model, while power windows with auto up/down on the driver's side with anti-pinch protection is now standard across the board.
The 2017 Subaru WRX is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection flat-four engine paired with the standard six-speed manual transmission or a sport-tuned CVT with manual mode. The engine pumps out 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, with the WRX STI's 2.5-liter engine good for 305 hp and 290 lb-ft. The 2017 WRX is EPA-rated at 20/27 mpg city/highway when equipped with the manual and 18/24 mpg city/highway with the CVT. Go with the WRX STI and the EPA's ratings are 17/23 mpg.
The sport sedan offers a standard 6.2-inch touchscreen, connectivity with Aha, satellite radio, Pandora smartphone integration, Bluetooth, Sport, and auxiliary jack. All WRX trim levels also feature a standard rearview camera. Subaru offers the available Starlink 7.0 navigation system which adds a larger touchscreen, SMS text messaging, iTunes tagging, an extra USB port, and three years of complimentary map updates. On the WRX STI, those who want the car's added performance but not necessarily the enormous wing should know that a lower-profile spoiler is available as a no-cost option.
Safety
The 2017 Subaru WRX features the optional EyeSight Driver Assist Technology suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. For 2017, reverse auto braking has been added to Limited models equipped with the package. 2017 Subaru WRX Limited models equipped with the Sport Lineartronic transmission and the EyeSight package will also get navigation, blind spot detection, lane change assist, and rear cross traffic alert.
Standard safety features include brake assist, ABS brakes, daytime running lights, and a rear vision camera. The 2017 WRX will also have standard front, side, and curtain airbags, an energy-absorbing collapsible steering column and a ring-shaped reinforcement frame body structure.
What We Think
Since Subaru dropped the hatchback body style from the WRX lineup, practicality has been reduced. The 2017 Subaru WRX offers up a trunk space on 12 cubic feet, but that number can be expanded with the rear 60/40 split seats folded down. Passenger space remains decent for four adults to fit comfortably.
Some exterior features like the hood scoop and available large rear wing may turn away buyers looking for a tamer appearance, but the performance may outweigh any styling concerns. The standard AWD gives the WRX plenty of control on all road surfaces and weather conditions, and thanks to the suspension setup, the sport sedan is responsive and gives the driver confidence on the road.

The WRX STI (and some WRX trims) offer a multi-mode driving options that alter the engine control module and throttle for Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp modes. The SI-DRIVE system is operated with a rotary dial controller.

Another Subaru 2.0-L makes the list
A surprise Subaru engine makes the list for 2017. The Subaru BRZ’s updated naturally aspirated 205-hp 2.0-liter boxer is also on the latest nominee list for 2017. BRZ’s engine gets a number of upgrades for 2017 and gets a bump in horsepower and torque. But it’s the turbo version in the 4-door WRX sedan that “still blows us away” according to Wards Auto. The WRX’s 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo (DIT) was recognized by WardsAuto last year for driver performance and also environmental performance.
The new-generation Subaru WRX debuted a new 268-horsepower 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo Boxer engine in 2015. This was a return to its roots as the first 2002 U.S. spec WRX came with a 2.0-liter 227hp turbo engine. The 2015 WRX engine was the all-new 2.0-liter FA turbocharged Boxer version of the new Forester 2.0 XT powerplant. The WRX version uses different cams and higher-rate valve springs and other enhancements to enhance the performance envelope.
This is the 23rd year for the competition, and the winners will be announced in December at the WardsAuto Outlook Conference in Birmingham, MI. Subaru’s 2017 WRX 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer is a contender for this year’s Ward’s 10 Best Engine award again. The BRZ’s 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer is also on the list of nominees.
