Need suggestions on impeller replacement. I'm fairly inclined to mechanical work but never attempted to replace my own impeller. After the long winter I finally got the Fam loaded to go out today and overheated before leaving the marina. No inboard mechanics to speak of in tega cay but got an estimate of for the work Thoughts or advice???

how to replace a flexable impeller pump impeller. This will give you the general idea. Different brands of pumps do have different mountings.

Have you been running the engine even for a short time without water??

$ to $!!! WOW. Please tell us who quoted that so the next unsuspecting person doesn't get bent over for a $ impeller!

PCM Impeller-Serpentine Engines - RP For a zr6 direct drive ??

If thats the one thats mounted up high on the engine,up by the port cylinder head it's supposed to be real easy. I was talking to the PCM rep at the Miami boat show,he said they are easier than the old sherwoods to change. Pump does not even have to come off. I guess you release the belt tension and just remove the pump cover and replace the impeller. There must be a u tube video

Assuming there weren't changed between '05 and '09 I can attest that the impeller change on a L is painfully simple. Minimal tools required, pump stays in place.

The PCM marketing dept. sure got involved in that one! Gary, they mentioned your "wobbly crank mounted pump" as being "inferior"!! They also feel stainless is superior to brass and bronze!

pbrainard, it ran for yards and about 5 minutes. Not sure if impeller got any water through the engine or not. When I made it back to the dock, the antifreeze reservoir released itself. The temp gauge pegged at the end. Anything else I should worry about? This same thing happened 2 yrs ago with no apparent damage. Figured the control system would force the engine off before I really busted something loose.. air with zr6

Overheats can kill (blister) exhaust hoses if severe enough. I wouldn't run the boat again until you inspect the impeller. Like the others have said, it's pretty straight forward to inspect the current impeller.

Ironically enough Pete the guy I was talking to at the show turned out to be a friend of Reid's and owned a Holman Moody and 2 Shamrocks.
As to changing it though I'd try to look in the reference section and see if a manual is in there. I know it's just a matter of releasing the belt tension and removing it then removing the pump cover/bearing housing and replacing the impeller. But if your not mechanically minded I'm sure it could seem like learning a foreign language. I'll bet Quinner has done it but then again he has a fully equipped tool box.

Scott,
I feel you misunderstood my question. Let me rephrase: Have you been running the boat OUT of the water? The rubber impeller in the RWP is water lubricated. Even short runs say at the ramp wanting to make sure the engine will start can hurt the impeller.

I did start it out of water last night, but ran it for under 5 seconds.. Could that have been what got my impeller? It is only a year old with maybe hours on the new impeller

Can't find this part anywhere other than np.com.. West marine has a ton of impellers, do I have to get the exact part number or can I get one with same keyway and vane??

Back to TopPost Options Post Options   Thanks (0) Thanks(0)   Quote Gary SQuote  Post ReplyReplyDirect Link To This Post Posted: July at pm

If you had the oem number you would be able to find it elsewhere but since you don't a Nautique dealer would be better than West Marine.

Stick with Nautique Parts. N3 is also an option and have a banner at the top of the page. They are also a site sponsor plus their parts manager Zach is on site daily to help. I can't say the same for NP. West is the VERY LAST place to go and that's if I was drowning, needed a life preserver and wanted to get to stuck up my rear by paying twice the amount of $$$. Do get an OEM impeller and not one of the junk Sierra impellers West sells.

5 seconds shouldn't hurt without water but if you do it frequently, it's not good. Is anyone else running it dry? Maybe a mechanic who doesn't take the time to hook up the hose?

Was this the first outing after de-winterization?

Just wondering if there is anything else in play here, like a disconnected hose, or a lose strainer etc.

It was the first outing after winterizing.. Ordered the impeller yesterday, could not find a YouTube video or instructions. Should be interesting😳

I think when your all done you will find out that it was easier to do than expected. PCM made it with service in mind. You don't even have to adjust belt tension, its all done like a serpentine belt on a car with a spring loaded idler wheel.

So o don't have to touch the belt?? Sweet.. I don't even know where to locate the impeller yet..

Back to TopPost Options Post Options   Thanks (0) Thanks(0)   Quote 81nautiqueQuote  Post ReplyReplyDirect Link To This Post Posted: July at pm
I'll take a gamble here and say if it has a serpentine belt then it's going to be a snap to replace. On my all you need to do is put a ratchet on the belt tensioner and pull, that will give you enough slack to remove the belt from the water pump pulley. You don't need to remove the belt, just get it off the water pump and out of the way.

After that the pulley on the Raw Water Pump has 3 access holes (A) so you can get at the 3 bolts that hold the water pump housing together. remove those 3 bolts and separate the water pump housing. Replace impeller and O ring,   reassemble.

Use the ratchet again to relieve tension on the tensioner and re-install the belt. It is the easiest impeller I've ever changed and mine is harder to get at since it's a V drive, yours is really straight forward.   Make sure you re-install the belt as shown in the diagram.

This would describe the procedure for an Excalibur, ZR may have a shroud that needs to be removed first. On the Excal you can change an impeller in under 2 mins, super easy!!

Tools:
15mm or adjustable wrench for the idler pully.
10mm socket with extension for the pump cover bolts.

1. Take the serp belt off. (If you can't figure out how to do this, stop and take your boat to the dealer.)
2. Take the three cover bolts off - bolts stay with cover due to tiny o-rings.
3. Carefully twist the pulley and slightly mis-align the pump as you pull it out and the impeller will come out with it. Otherwise the impeller stays in the cavity.
4. Change out the four o-rings. One for the cover, three for the bolts. Some oil or soap as lube is handy but not required.
5. Squirt some dish soap on the impeller and lather it up with a bit of water.
6. Place the impeller on the shaft.
7. Then line up the impeller with casing and "top" at the top. Then rotate the pulley in the running direction and the impeller will slip right in.
8. Snug the three bolts.
9. Torque to 9 ft-lbs
Put the belt back on.

Got it done this morning. Took 30 min for a newbie. 5 min disassemble, 20 min to get impeller in the correct way, 5 min assemble.. If I could figure out how to post photo, I'd show you the old one

Not that I would question the work, but looks a bit chewed up for ~ 25 hours of use???

Cant find anything on the internet, and PCM manual is super vague, doesn't go into details at all.

I have changed many impellers on Indmars & Volvo Penta, but it seems a lot more complex with PCM.

Also my maintenance / red warning light turned on this weekend, anyone know how how to check what error it gives without having to take it to the dealer ? (what device to buy that reads codes on boats )

Find water pump. Take cover off. Remove old impeller. Replace with new.

Just kidding. Sort of.

On a serious note, you'll probably get a better response on the Tige forums. Or Planet Nautique. Nauti uses PCM I think

I changed mine this summer, piece of cake. The manual doesn&#;t give you any specific instruction for changing them. That diagram above is all you&#;ll need.
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/page=49#manual

&#; Use a wrench to turn the belt tensioner and remove the belt.

&#; Find the 3 bolts inside the water pump housing and use a socket wrench to remove them (I can&#;t remember what size or type, maybe 10mm?)

&#; Remove water pump housing

&#; Remove impeller behind housing. Note the direction of rotation. I used a needle nose pliers to remove mine, not too hard.

&#; Place new impeller and put everything back together

I think that&#;s it!

awesome, thanks a lot !
