Monster Hunter World: How To Get And Use The Plunderblade

By Jesse Lennox

ShareTweetEmail

Here's how to find and use the Plunderblade in Monster Hunter World.

Even if you don't want to team up with other players, you're never completely on your own when you take on a hunt in Monster Hunter World thanks to your trusty palico sidekick. This feline friend will be with you through thick and thin, standing by your side as you take on foes orders of magnitude larger than either of you, so you should do what you can to outfit them with the best gear you can. Aside from weapons and armor, you can equip them with a special piece of equipment that gives you some form of buff. The Plunderblade is considered by many to be the best in the game, so getting into into the hands, or paws, of your palico early is essential.

Where To Find The Plunderblade In Monster Hunter World

Finding the Plunderblade requires you to first go through the game's main story at least through the 14th assigned quest, Into the Bowels of the Vale, where you will gain access to the lower areas in the Rotten Vale. Once you can venture into this zone, head to area 13 and find the Lynian Researcher - make sure you bring at least a few pieces of raw meat with you. Speak to them, then leave the area for a minute or two until an Odogaron brings a corpse down.

Related: Monster Hunter World: How To Unlock And Beat Fatalis

There's no need to fight it if you don't want to, just wait for it to leave the corpse and wait for a Plunderer Grimalkyne to show up when you go back to the Lynian Researcher. It will flee when you get close, but after you talk to the Researcher you will have a new icon on your map to find the Plunderers in area 15.

Now make your way to this spot in area 15 where you will catch another glimpse of the Grimalkyne before it scampers off yet again. Your palico will suggest leaving some of your raw meat out for it. Drop one down in the middle of the room and retreat a bit into the tunnel and wait for a few of the Grimalkyne to come down and start munching on the meat.

Now when you approach them, they will be friendly and even give your palico a brand new Plunderblade, plus teach it how to speak Girros.

What The Plunderblade Does

So, now that you've gone through all the trouble of getting a Plunderblade, what was the point? When equipped, the Plunderblade lets your palico carve more monster parts while you're still fighting, rather than having to wait until a monster is defeated. That allows you to get way more parts per hunt, and the higher level your palico becomes with it, the more materials it will carve.

Now, giving up the default vigorwasp might be a shock to some players who have become dependent on your palico constantly healing you up, but once you get into the meat of Monster Hunter, it is far more valuable to get additional resources to speed up your grind. On the other hand, if you're not currently grinding out parts for a new armor set or weapon, take whatever makes your life easiest. Monster Hunter is all about preparation, and this is just another tool to add to your collection.

MHW Palico Gadget Levelling while Idle/AFK (1 to 15 in ~3 hours)

Monster Hunter: World gives you a ride-or-die (ride-or-faint?) companion in your palico. While you build yourself increasingly devastating weapons, you’ll also craft new weapons and armor for your palico (our favorite is the ladybug outfit because, come on).

Your palico deploys a piece of equipment during a fight. By default, your palico will use a vigorwasp spray, which provides a welcome healing boost. As you become more comfortable with the game and hunting monsters becomes less taxing, you might want to swap out that vigorwasp spray for a more specialized tool.

We’ve already discussed the other equipment you can find for your palico, but this guide is going to focus on finding what we’d argue is the most useful: the plunderblade. The plunderblade lets your palico gather extra monster parts during a fight, cutting down the time it takes for you to craft your next set of armor or that shiny new weapon.

Finding the plunderblade

  • Capcom
  • Capcom
  • Capcom
  • Capcom

To find the plunderblade, you’ll first have to find and befriend the Plunderers of the Rotten Vale. You’ll need to progress the main story past the 14th assigned quest, Into the Bowels of the Vale. This gives you access to the lower areas of the Vale.

Area 13, the Lynian Researcher and the odogaron

Look for the Lynian Researcher in area 13 of your map. If he’s not there, you can try seeking him out in other areas of the New World and befriending other grimalkyne tribes. You can also try filling some of the requests of the other Commission Researchers (the Piscine Researcher and his very fine hat and the Endemic Life Researcher). Doing these quests for them or befriending the other tribes is (probably) optional, but they’ll fill your time while you wait for the Lynian Research to show up.

Before you set off to find the Plunderers and the Lynian Researcher, make sure you have at least one (but preferably several) pieces of raw meat in your item pouch. After you speak to the Lynian Researcher, wander off for a minute. You have to wait until an odogaron drags a corpse down to this area. You don’t have to fight the odogaron, thankfully, or even be around when it comes back. You just have to wait for it to drag a meal back to the area. (Anecdotally, this has to be a legiana corpse.)

Area 15, the Plunderer grimalkyne and the plunderblade

Once everything is in place — the Lynian Researcher and the odogaron’s meal — you’ll spot a Plunderer grimalkyne when you return to the area in front of the Lynian Researcher. The grimalkyne will run off when you approach, though. Talk to the Lynian Researcher again or just check your map — there’ll be a new icon for the Plunderers in area 15.

When you get there, you’ll spot the grimalkyne again, but he’ll run off when you get close. Your palico will make a couple of comments about how hungry he looks, then it’ll suggest you leave some meat for it.

Place a chunk of raw meat on the ground by hitting the use button like any other item. Drop it where the palico was standing in the middle of the room, then back off — the mouth of the tunnel you came through is a safe distance. The grimalkyne and his friends will come down from the cliffs and eat the food you left.

This time when you approach, you’ll all be friends. The Plunderers will give your palico a plunderblade and teach it to speak to girros. Speaking to girros is a neat party trick, but the plunderblade is what’s really impressive here. It lets your palico carve monster parts from a monster during a fight (rather than having to wait to carve them off a corpse). This makes it a great tool for farming and grinding monster parts to build armor. As your palico levels up with the plunderblade, it’ll grab more and better materials.

When and why to use the plunderblade

Capcom

Switching to the plunderblade is not for the ill-prepared. Giving up the training wheels of the vigorwasp spray means not having a near-constant source of healing and completely changes the tone of monster hunts. It means a much heavier reliance on the potions in your item pouch. But all that extra monster loot is a really appealing incentive.

Capcom

The purpose (and results) of the plunderblade are what should determine when you use it. It’s there to give you extra monster parts, so if that’s not what you’re after, use something that makes your life easier instead. If, however, you’re in the middle of a grind for new armor or weapons, the plunderblade is invaluable. Your palico (and any Plunderer grimalkyne you happen to convince to join you) bringing in extra pelts, fangs and claws cuts the length of your grind considerably.

Monster Hunter World Plunderblade quest - How to unlock the Plunderblade from the Rotten Vale with Raw Meat

Monster Hunter World's Plunderblade is one of the more desirable upgrades, allowing your Palico to farm additional materials from monsters as you are hunting.

It is one of many upgrades you'll receive for your Palico, the rest of which we outline on more detail on our Grimalkynes and Doodles page.

Elsewhere, our Monster Hunter World tips can help you decide when to farm, what to forage and what to do between hunts, and our Monster Hunter World walkthrough and guide can help with main quest and story progress.

What is the Plunderblade?

The Plunderblade is a Palico Gadget that sees your companion 'steal' bonus parts from monsters as you are fighting them.

During a hunt, you'll see messages saying if your Palico is about to attempt to steal some parts, as well as whether it was successful or not.

plunder10

It's all automated, so there's nothing you have to do once it's equipped. As you level it up, the more proficient your Palico will be at stealing materials from monsters, but even at the lower levels it can grab one to three materials per hunt - which could be enough to get the armour upgrade you've been saving for.

There is also an upgrade on the way - the Palarang - which will break off a material for you to collect mid-hunt. Keep an eye on your Palico's commands to make sure you don't miss anything.

Note by using the Plunderblade, you are denying yourself some of the more defensive Palico Gadgets such as the Vigorwasp, and as such, possibly make fights more difficult.

That said, monster materials are the lifeblood of the game's progression, so the faster you get materials, the better your capabilities will be!

plunder11

How to get the Plunderblade from the Rotten Vale using Raw Meat

The Plunderblade is a reward from the Grimalkynes quest in the Rotten Vale. If you haven't already investigated them, it's worth doing so - each unlocks a Palico Gadget and a new monster Tailraider for your Palico to recruit.

It's worth worth noting that it's assumed you need to complete these in order of area, with Ancient Forest being first and the Rotten Vale coming last. So if you cannot make this Grimalkyne trigger, then it might be worth going back and doing each one in sequence.

plunder6

You also need Raw Meat to complete this quest. You might already have this in your Item Box from other quests, but if you need some, take down some Aptonoth (the small monsters roaming the opening area of the Ancient Forest) and you'll get some from carving.

To get started, head to the Rotten Vale in Expedition mode and visit area 13, which is at the bottom-most level. The easiest way to get there is by travelling to Central Camp 11, then dropping down and taking a left. You'll be in an area with a giant ribcage in the middle - go round that, up the small step and into the enclosed area. It should also have a Legiana Corpse there.

Once inside, you should see a Grimalkyne - it won't appear on your map unlike previous Grimalkyne encounters - who should then run away.

plunder2

Iceborne has arrived! Here's how to start Monster Hunter World Iceborne and beat the first monster, Beotodus. Once you get settled into the world, learn about Layered Armour in Monster Hunter World and the various side-quests available - including Surveyor Set missions, Boaboa quests and finding Pearlspring Macaque locations. And, when you're ready to take it on, Shara Ishvalda. If you're crafting, then learning where to find rare materials such as Purecrystal and Monster Slogbone is useful. Been away from Monster Hunter for a while and need a refresher? Our pages on weapon changes and types, how to join friends and Squads in multiplayer plus how to capture monsters and mount monsters can help.

Once it has fled, go to area 15. To get there, from this small cavern where you saw the Grimalkyne, if you hug the wall going west (right if you are facing out) you'll quickly come across a cave system. Take a right here to a dead end, where the Grimalkyne will be.

plunder3
plunder4

It'll flee again, but won't disappear entirely, and instead sit on a shelf high above. Your Palico will explain it is hungry - giving you a hint what to do next.

plunder5

Run straight ahead and get as close to the Grimalkyne as you can, and drop some Raw Meat (select it from your quick menu, and 'use' it to place on the ground).

If you don't have any Raw Meat on you, fast travel to a camp, enter the tent and manage your inventory so you can get some from your Item Box supply, then come back. The Grimalkyne won't disappear while you are gone.

When you have placed the Raw Meat back away to the edge of this cave, and the Grimalkyne will come down and eat it. After a short scene where other Grimalkynes join in, you'll have a cutscene, and be given the Plunderblade as a reward.

plunder7
plunder8
plunder9

And, as with other Grimalkyne quests, be sure to talk to your Palico (attempt to change its costume or weapon) to be told it can now recruit Girros as a Tailraider.

Monster Hunter World: How to get the Plunderblade - the best Palico gadget for farming

New players have a lot to look forward to in Monster Hunter World. There's a huge amount of weapon and armor variety, but that means you’re going to need a lot of crafting materials to get everything you want. To cut down on grinding, there’s a great Palico gadget that helps to harvest rare materials like Anjanath fangs, by knocking them off the monster while you’re fighting it. Here’s everything you need to do to get the Plunderblade Palico gadget.

Where to find the Plunderblade:

  • Talk to the Lynian Researcher in area 13 of the Rotten Vale
  • Wait around in the area for an Odogaron to drag a carcass into the chamber
  • Either defeat the Odogaron or let it leave
  • Wait for the “Plunderer” Grimalkyne cat to investigate the carcass, then run over to it
  • Track down the Grimalkyne by following your scoutflies
  • Once you find it again, it’ll run and hide, so drop some raw meat on the floor and back off
  • When the Grimalkyne comes down to eat the raw meat, it’ll give you the Plunderblade

To begin the sequence of events, you need to talk to the Lynian Researcher in the far north of the Rotten Vale in area 13.

Sometimes the researcher doesn’t spawn, so you’ll have to complete quests and come back until he’s there.

Once you’ve spoken to him, you need to wait close by until an Odogaron drags a dead Legiana carcass into the chamber. If you’re lucky, it might already be there. When this happens, you can either kill the Odogaron or just wait for it to leave.

Once it’s either dead or gone, a Grimalkyne cat called “Plunderer” will run up to the Legiana carcass. Move towards it and you’ll scare it off.

You then have to track Plunderer down using your scoutflies - just like with other Grimalkyne cats in other maps.

When you’ve cornered him again, he’ll hide behind some rocks where you can’t get to. To lure him out, you have to put some raw meat close to him on the ground and back off. You can get raw meat by killing small monsters like Aptonoth in the Ancient Forest or Kelbi in the Coral Highlands.

Then the Grimalkyne will come down to eat the meat and, as a reward for your kindness in feeding him and his friends, give you the Plunderblade.

You can equip the gadget by changing your Palico equipment in Astera or in your tent at camp.

What does the Plunderblade do?

The Plunderblade replaces your default Vigorwasp Spray Palico gadget, and makes it so your palico will hack off monster parts periodically during a fight. This makes it much easier to farm boss items, meaning you can focus solely on fighting, or just give yourself extra chances to find the loot you need to craft a weapon or armor piece.

To get the best farming results, you can equip the Plunderblade while completing capture Investigations. This will maximise your chances of getting as much monster specific loot as possible for your time.

How to use plunderblade? I've never used it.
Just equip on palico and keep spamming attacks with cat untill time runs out? Can anyone explain?
Order your cat to use it, farcaster back, go to tent to swap palico gadgets to another and back to reset cooldown, fly down and use again.

There's a maximum of four plunderblade drops you can get per quest, and they're shown on the quest reward screen, so it's 4% in practice for eyes.

I’ve gotten 2 eyes so far from all my runs and have 3 pieces of his gear without a kill. I think to make a full set and 1 weapon you’ll need 4 eyes total, 2 for the chest, 1 head, 1 weapon. I spent min on chest as I figure if that was the last piece I needed it means I’ll probably have to do 700 more runs until I got the final eye.

Weapons need 1 eye for each level. So they need 2 total.

So use it and immediately farcaster to camp? And how do you know cat got something? So there's no point in waiting 30 minutes till time runs out?

I think he says a line with a succesful plunder.

After doing the four plunderblades, can we return to camp(leave quest) and get the rewards?

Is there a feline skill to improve palico gadgets?

I only tried Fatalis once this weekend. It was a disaster, but I lasted long enough for my cat to plunder a few items. Not enough to make anything, but it's a start.

Watch what your cat says. Sometimes you need to pick up the shiny that your cat made it drop.

The other gadget with plunderblade, palarang I think it is called, gets it to drop the monster's shiny. So use that as well before farcasting back to camp.

It is just like what @Sirk said:
  • Practice with fighting Fatalis, learn its moveset while your palico go on with plundering
  • Once you're getting better and capable of securing second head break, that is more rewarding than slay Fatalis
  • Note that all its armors, charm upgrade and weapons can be crafted on the fly if you have the mats prior to slay

I farmed the special assignment in solo and managed to get full Fatalis beta sets, upgraded Handicraft charm V and crafted its R12 GS before completing the special assignment.

Fatalis is even more manageable once you have its armor and weapon.
