Shipt Employee Reviews in Birmingham, AL

Yay for self employment and the freedom to work or not work, on your schedule

Professional Shopping and delivery (Former Employee) - Birmingham, AL - February 3, 2021

I used to love this job. The freedom to work or not work, depending on my schedule and availability was priceless. I like grocery shopping, and I met some fantastic people. However, Shipt rolled out a new pay scale six months or so ago that is supposedly “effort based”. Their previous pay scale was very clearly delineated. They refuse to disclose the new pay scale formula, determined from their ivory tower nowhere near where I was working, and this had no idea of how much “effort” was required to complete the shops and deliveries. Most folks I know had their pay cut almost in half, making them more dependent on tips, which are definitely not something one can count on. So, under the current pay scale, I would not consider going back.

Pros

Scheduling flexibility

Shipt, the national same-day grocery shopping service headquartered in Birmingham, will soon have a new leader at the helm of the ship. Founder and CEO Bill Smith announced today he will step down to pursue other entrepreneurial endeavors. Taking his place will be Target executive Kelly Caruso, who most recently served as the vice president of merchandising for the global company.

Smith launched in 2014 in search of an easier way to streamline the grocery buying process. Since then, the company has taken off—expanding to over 250 markets across the country and adding a second headquarters location in San Fransisco.

Smith said in a statement he shared the news with the team today:

Today, I shared bittersweet news with our incredible team at . After four rewarding years of serving the community, I have made the decision to move on to my next startup. The journey of founding, developing, and building into a recognized and admired national brand has been the most fulfilling experience of my career.

Smith also commented on his successor, Kelly Caruso, who most worked at parent company, Target. Target purchased in 2017 for a cool $550 million.

Here’s what he had to say about Shipt’s future:

has a bright future ahead, and a new leader will guide it through the next era. I worked closely with the board to find a successor, and I welcome Kelly Caruso as the new chief executive officer of . With deep retail industry experience, Kelly is a strong leader who shares a passion for mission.”

Bright future ahead for Shipt

Shipt announced in January that the company is expanding its Birmingham headquarters to a second location at the Wells Fargo building, which is the tallest in Birmingham. Once renovations are completed in 2020, the building will be renamed the Building. The second headquarters will bring an additional 880 jobs to Birmingham.

Looks like a bright future for Smith, too

As for Smith, he says he’ll still serve the company in an advisory role while pursuing other entrepreneurial opportunities. He did not specify what his new venture will be, or where. Somehow we know it will be another epic chapter in his entrepreneurial journey. You can read his whole statement on LinkedIn.

Shipt Names Kelly Caruso Chief Executive Officer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 11, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shipt, an industry-leading same-day delivery service and marketplace, announces Kelly Caruso as chief executive officer, succeeding founder Bill Smith, who will continue to serve as an advisor to the company.

Caruso has more than 25 years of retail experience, holding roles from the stores to supply chain and merchandising. Most recently, Caruso was senior vice president hardlines at Target, responsible for developing the merchandising and guest experience strategies for toys, electronics and entertainment. Prior to that, she was president of Target’s independent global sourcing business, supporting the company’s owned-brand growth. Earlier in her career, she held a number of merchandising and inventory planning businesses at Target, May Merchandising and Abercrombie & Fitch.

“With expertise ranging from the sales floor to sourcing and merchandising, Kelly is a proven leader who knows retail inside and out. She’ll help Shipt continue bringing same-day convenience to more consumers through its growing marketplace of retail partners,” said John Mulligan, Shipt director and Target’s chief operating officer. “Bill’s entrepreneurial achievements have changed the game in same-day delivery, and we thank him for his outstanding leadership of Shipt.”

Shipt was acquired by Target in 2017 and operates as an independent subsidiary. In that year, Shipt has grown into a leading same-day delivery marketplace across the country – scaling to more than 250 markets, doubling its membership, tripling the size of its team and adding more retailer partners to its same-day marketplace. Its growth is enabled by a national shopper network that brings differentiated service and personalization to the customer experience.

“Coast to coast, nearly a hundred thousand Shipt shoppers are delivering orders within hours from more than 60 retailers with an unmatched personalized touch that has raised consumer expectations for quality and convenience,” said Kelly Caruso, Shipt CEO. “I’m honored to join the Birmingham community and lead the Shipt team as we continue to grow our shopper network, assortment, and retail partners to make life simpler for millions of people.”

“In 2014, I started Shipt to help people spend more time on what’s important to them. It’s been an incredible experience to be part of such a great team that built Shipt from an idea into a national leader in same-day delivery,” said Bill Smith, founder and former CEO of Shipt. “I am proud of what the Shipt team has accomplished and have confidence that Shipt’s momentum will continue, which is why I have decided now is a good time for me to get back to my passion, creating and building early stage companies. The company will benefit from Kelly’s retail leadership as it focuses on being the best same-day, personalized service for members.”

Caruso will be located in Birmingham, Alabama, where Shipt is headquartered. The company also has operations in San Francisco.
