In this article we are going to focus specifically on comparing the 511 vs 513 Levi jeans, using photos of the jeans that I own (I own both the 511 and 513).

What is the difference between the Levi’s 511 and 513?

Here’s a look at the leg opening of my 511 jeans sitting on top of my 513 jeans. As you can see, the 511 jeans have a skinnier leg opening:

levis-511-vs-513-leg-opening
  • Levi’s 511 Men’s Jeans – True slim fit jeans. Slim through the hips, thighs, and leg opening. Perfect fit if you want a fitted look that isn’t too skinny. Flex fabric available. Click here to view the 511 jeans at Levi.com.
  • Levi’s 513 Men’s Jeans – If you want a slim cut that shows some figure, but are worried about it being too skinny, these 513’s may be the right cut for you. Slim cut waist and thighs with a straight leg opening, which gives you a tailored look without it hugging your legs like spandex. Click here to view the 513 jeans at Levi.com.

The difference between the Levi’s 511 and 513 is the 511 jeans have a true slim cut with a 14.5″ leg opening, but the 513 jeans have a slim-straight cut, which has a wider 15.75″ leg opening. The 511 and 513 jeans have the same slim cut in the hips and thighs, but the 513 jeans have a looser cut below the knee.

I personally wear the 511 jeans more than any other type of jeans – I just prefer that fit for most situations. That said, I do own the 513 jeans as well, and if you don’t like skinny jeans, you will probably prefer the 513 style over the 511.

Levi’s 511 vs 513 Fit

The 511 and 513 jeans are similar in that they both have the classic Levi’s appearance with a zip fly and button waist. As we just discussed, the main difference in the 511 vs 513 jeans is going to come down to fit.

levis-513-vs-511-jeans

The 511 jeans have a slim fit while the 513 jeans have a slim-straight fit. This means you can expect the 511 jeans to be slim the entire way from the hip through the ankle. The 513 jeans are a bit different. They have a slim fit in the hips and thighs, but a straight fit down through the ankle.

This means that the 511 fit is the slimmer fit between the two. I like to think of the 511 jeans as a true slim fit, and the 513 jeans as a slim fit for those who absolutely do not like skinny jeans.

Although the 511 jeans are not a skinny fit (meaning they don’t hug your leg like spandex), they do have a slim fit the entire way. For some people, the slim fit makes them feel uncomfortable.

If you are someone who wants a pair of jeans to show some figure, but don’t like the feel or look of slim jeans, then the 513 Slim Straight fit gives you sort of a hybrid jean that might work perfectly for you.

It is going to be slim up near the waist to show some figure, but from the knee down it is going to be a straight cut, to remove any thought of them being skinny jeans.

  • Levi’s 511 Jeans – Slim fit from the hip through the ankle. Picture here:
levis-511-mens-jeans
  • Levi’s 513 Jeans – Slim fit in hips and thighs, straight fit from knee through leg opening. Picture here:
levis-513-jeans

In my experience, both the 511 and 513 jeans have a true-to-size fit, meaning the waist and the length was what I expected. That said, because the 511 is a slim fit, if you are naturally in-between sizes, I would probably recommend sizing up.

But I personally have always ordered my normal sizing for the 511 jeans. I think over all the years I have worn them, I have only ran into one pair that I felt was too small in the waist. My recommendation is to order your normal sizing for both the 511 and the 513 jeans.

Leg Opening

As we have discussed above, the 511 and the 513 jeans are going to have the same slim cut in the waist and thighs, but the 513 jeans will have a wider, straight cut down below the knee. Here is a look at the 511 jeans (light blue) sitting on top of a pair of 513 jeans (dark blue). As you can see, the waist and thigh areas are practically identical:

levis-513-vs-511-jeans

But from the knee down, the 513 jeans widen out and have a straight cut while the 511 jeans stay slim all the way through the ankle:

levis-513-vs-511-jeans-compared

Because of this, one of the major differences in these styles of jeans is going to be the leg opening. Here is a close-up look at the 511 (light blue) slim leg sitting on top of the 513 (dark blue) straight leg:

levis-513-vs-511-leg-opening

The 511 jeans have a slim leg opening and the 513 jeans have a straight leg opening.

  • Levi’s 511 Jeans – 14.5″ leg opening
  • Levi’s 513 Jeans – 15.75″ leg opening

Although this leg opening might possibly impact your decision, for me the overall difference in fit was minimal. The area through the calf feels more relaxed in the 513 jeans, but in my experience, the way the 511’s fit against the shoe and the way the 513’s fit against the shoe are very similar.

Here is a look at a pair of my 511’s and a pair of my 513’s paired with a boot and a sneaker so you can get an idea of how they fit near the shoe:

levis-513-vs-511

As I said, there isn’t a huge amount of difference in how they look near the ankle, but because the 513’s have a larger leg opening, they are easier to pair with certain types of boots, especially work boots. Here is a look at my 513 jeans paired with work boots:

Levi’s 511 vs 513 Style Options

Both the 511 and the 513 are available in premium denim cuts. You can expect the premium denim to cost you a bit more, but it will give you more colors to choose from if you are wanting to browse through all the color options.

The 511 jeans are a very popular style, and because of that, there are other types of pants offered in the 511 cut. Levi offers:

  • 511 Chino Pants
  • 511 Hybrid Trouser Pants
  • 511 Corduroy Pants

For the most part, I have had a difficult time finding the 513 style offered in anything but jeans. But the 513 jeans do have a lot of colors to choose from (including a khaki color), but overall, the 511 style has more options to choose from than the 513 style.

In this article we are going to focus specifically on comparing the 513 vs 514 Levi jeans using real photos. We will begin our comparison by discussing the difference in fit between the 513 and 514 jeans.

levis-513-vs-514

What is the difference between the Levi’s 513 vs 514?

The difference between the Levi’s 513 and 514 jeans is the 513 jeans have a slim-straight cut with a 15.75″ leg opening and the 514 jeans have a traditional straight cut with a 16.5″ leg opening. You can expect the 513 jeans to fit tighter through the hips and thighs than the 514 jeans.

Levi’s 513 vs 514 Fit

As we discussed above, there is a significant difference in fit between the 513 and 514 jeans. The 513 is a slim-straight cut and the 514 jeans are a traditional straight cut.

The 513 jeans are slim through the hips and thighs, then have a straight cut below the knee. The 513 jeans act as a sort of hybrid between slim jeans and straight jeans.

The 513 jeans are popular for men who want something that is fitted, but don’t want the jeans to fit so tight that they look like skinny jeans. The 513 jeans also have a wider leg opening than most traditional slim jeans, so the 513 jeans work well for those who like a fitted cut in the thighs, but don’t want a slim leg opening (more on the leg opening later).

The 514 jeans are a traditional straight cut from the hip through the ankle. Although these jeans fit looser than the 513 jeans, don’t expect baggy, sloppy jeans. They still show a bit of shape, but do so in a way that does not hug your leg. The 514 jeans are not slim/skinny jeans. They are more of a traditional fit.

The 514 jeans are perfect for those wanting a fit that doesn’t hug their legs, but also don’t want the fit to be so loose that it looks sloppy. The 514 jeansstill show some figure when you wear them, but don’t fit tight against your legs in any area.

Straight cut from the hip through the ankle:

It is also important to note that even though the 513 jeans widen to a straight cut below the knee, they are still slimmer below the knee than the 514 jeans. Below is a photo of my 513 jeans sitting on top of my 514 jeans. As you can see, the 513 jeans are much slimmer than the 514 jeans through the hips and thighs:

513-vs-514

They also are slimmer below the knee:

What size to order?

In my experience, both the 513 and 514 jeans have a true-to-size fit, meaning the waist and the length was what I expected. Just remember that the 513 jeans have a slim fit through the hips and thighs, so if you are naturally in-between sizes, I would size up on the 513 jeans.

Leg Opening

The leg opening in the 513 vs the 514 jeans is one of the most significant differences in these jeans. Although both of these jeans have a straight cut below the knee, the leg openings are not the same size.

The 513 jeans have a 15.75″ leg opening and the 514 jeans have a 16.5″ leg opening. This can impact which style you prefer.

If you are planning to pair your jeans with bigger work boots, then obviously the larger leg opening on the 514 jeans will help. Below is a look at how you can expect these jeans to fit near the ankle:

  • Levi’s 513 Jeans – 15.75″ leg opening:

  • Levi’s 514 Jeans – 16.5″ leg opening:

Other Options Besides the 513 and 514 Jeans

If you prefer a 513 slim-straight fit that gives you a snug fit through the thighs, then also consider these options:

  • Levis 501 Original Jeans – This is one of Levi’s most iconic styles. The 501 jeans have a regular cut through the thighs that shows some shape, combined with a straight cut below the knee. These jeans have a similar, but not identical, fit in comparison to the 513 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
  • LEE Modern Series Slim-Straight Leg Jean – LEE is another trusted name in jeans. This pair of Lee jeans has the slim fit through the thighs and the straight fit below the knee which make it very similar to the 513 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).

If you prefer the 514 traditional straight fit that shows some figure but doesn’t hug your legs tight, then also consider these options:

  • Levi’s 505 Men’s Jeans – These are very similar to the 514 jeans. Regular straight cut from the hips through the ankles. The 514 jeans sit lower on the waist than the 505 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
  • LEE Premium Select Classic-Fit Straight-Leg Jean – This pair of Lee jeans has the classic straight fit that is similar to the 514 jeans. Straight fit from the hip through the ankle. Not too tight or too baggy. 16.5″ leg opening. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).

Огляд джинсів Levi’s 513 Slim Straight USA

Anti-fit: This is essential to Levi’s ethos. Jeans have a slightly looser fit, especially in the top block (see below). “The back of a pair of Levi’s doesn’t really hug a guy’s backside perfectly,” Cheung said.”That is deliberate.” The iconic image of Bruce Springsteen’s posterior on the cover of Born in the USA exemplifies this look.

Denim: The fabric used to make jeans, this strong cotton twill is dyed with indigo which gives it a distinctive blue shade. In recent years, this all-cotton fabric is woven with a small percentage of stretch material for comfort.

5-pocket: The foundational design of all blue jeans designed by Levi’s. The 5-pocket design is simple: two front internal pockets, one right-hand coin pocket — originally a “watch pocket” — and two back patch pockets.

Bar Tacks: A series of close machine-made stitches used to reinforce stress points throughout the jeans. Most noticeably, this feature is found on the top corners of the back pockets.

Rivets: Another foundational feature of all Levi’s, copper rivets are placed at a handful of stress points on the jeans.

Red Tab: This small tab is sewn on the outside of the right back pocket. It is one of a few ways Levi’s are instantly recognizable.

Arcuates: These two rows of yellow stitches form arcs on the back pockets of every pair of Levi’s.

Back Leather Patch: No pair of Levi’s is complete without the back right waistband patch showing two horses pulling apart a pair of jeans — a nod to Levi’s strength and durability. For practical purposes, this patch also shows the fit number and size.

Top Block: The part of the pant that includes the waist and hips. The cut here defines the fit through the thighs: skinny, slim or straight.

Waist: To find a waist size, measure across the top of a pair of jeans (laid flat) and double that number (i.e. a waist measured at 16 inches is tagged as a size 32). The waist measurement is also the first number of the tagged sized (i.e. 32 x 34).

Inseam: This is the second size listed on the tag. It refers to the measurement from the crotch to the leg opening.

Rise: The rise indicates where the jeans will sit on your waist. When measured, it is the distance between the crotch and the top of the fly. The greater the rise, the higher the jeans will sit on your waist. Typically, slimmer jeans have a lower rise.

Shrink-to-Fit: While only available in a small number of Levi’s 501s, shrink-to-fit jeans are made from denim that has not been pre-shrunk in the factory. Jeans cut from this denim will shrink when soaked and will form to your body. Levi’s claims these jeans will shrink up to 10 percent after the first soak.
