I have had one fish mounted. My wife caught a 70 lb Dorado in CAbo in 03'. The outfitter 'Dreamcatcher' recommended we use Gray's taxidermy. WE had been quoted that the fish would cost about $ to have mounted. I thought that was fair and paid the downpayment. They told us we would get a bill for the remainder at a later date. The fish cost us over $, no shit. I was totally pissed. The way they do it is charge you a downpayment fee first, then send you a bill for the remainder of the taxidermy fee, then a fee for building a crate to ship in, then a shipping and handling fee. I kid you not when I say the bills keep coming and you have no control. You either pay or don't get your mount. Yes, it is a replica, I knew it would be. They paint only one side of the fish. It looks like a Dorado. We had sent pics of the fish we caught with instructions to make it look as close as possible. They made no attempt, I guess $ ain't enough for that. What a joke.
If you have been to Cabo lately, I go every year, you will notice all the guides outfitted with jackets from Grays. You think they make a little money from there scam
Sorry, it really isn't a scam they just didn't give me the entire price of the shipping and all the other crap at the beginning.

Everyone who has ever had a fish mounted, enjoys having someone ask them, Hey, where did you catch that fish? Every time you someones trophy fish, mounted on a wall, your immediate thought is, cool, then you think, I sure would like to catch one of those. Whether the you see fish replicas at an office, a man cave, camp house, someones home or in some restaurant, we do envy the person who caught it, right?
The one thing you need to know is, with freshwater fish like bream, bass, crappie, walleye and perch is, the taxidermist must use the skin and scales of the fish they mount. You dont get to keep your fish. With saltwater fish mounts, taxidermist dont even need the actual fish you caught. Thats right, saltwater species such as red snapper, shark, blue marlin, dolphin fish and tuna are all replicas.
Why Conservation Minded Anglers Like Fish Replicas
Red snapper make a beautiful fish mount. Since we mostly catch them here in Orange Beach, they are a logical choice for our customers to get mounted.
With todays conservation minded anglers, it is even more important to leave a few fish in the water. That is why we do our part and release most of the red snapper we catch each day due to short seasons and low bag limits. This way, future generation will have something to catch. This is what we call conservation minded angling or the right thing to do. We only take what we need, but we do take a lot of pictures of you and your trophy fish. For those of you who want a little more than a picture of the trophy fish, we offer a fish replica. The best part of it all is, we dont charge as much as everyone else to mount your fish.
So, it doesnt matter to us if you caught your fish on our boat or your own boat. All you have to do is come see us at our dock between trips or after we get in, we will gladly help you fill out the order form and take your lowest priced deposit and you will be on your way to getting your trophy fish mounted. In about a month or so, you can pay the balance you owe to Grays Taxidermy and pay for shipping and your fish replica will be on your way.
