Manual Monetization on SoundCloud

SoundCloud monetization is not automatic like on other platforms like YouTube or Spotify. To monetize a song on SoundCloud requires manual action for every track.

In the future, monetization on SoundCloud will hopefully be more automatic. However, due to issues and bugs on SoundCloud’s platform, automatication monetization is not currently available or reliable. Proton is working closely with their team to bring automatic monetization in the future.

This article will help you setup manual monetization until automatic monetization is working better. Please note that SoundCloud doesn’t generate much money - so you may prefer to wait until automatic monetization is available.


Good News: Upgrading your label's SoundCloud for monetization with Proton will unlock unlimited uploads for your channel, without needing a paid Pro account! 

If you want other premium features like Spotlight, you'd still need a paid Pro account. The Proton upgrade is only for free unlimited uploads.


How can I get started?

If you’ve never monetized a track before on SoundCloud through Proton, then the 1st step is to enable monetization on your label’s SoundCloud profile. 

Inside Proton SoundSystem, load your label and click the “Details & Settings” tab. Near the top, look for the area to connect your SoundCloud account. 

  • If your label’s SoundCloud profile is NOT already connected, connect it now.

  • Note: Make sure to connect your label's profile, NOT your artist/DJ profile.

  • After connecting your label's SoundCloud profile, the Proton team will be in touch within 2-3 business days to setup monetization on your profile.

After the Proton team has setup your profile for monetization, you’ll see the “Monetization” checkbox checked ON in the “Details & Settings” area. If you have issues with this step, please contact us for help.

My profile is connected & monetization is on! Now what?

After Proton enables monetization on your SoundCloud account, look for the “Monetization” tab to appear when you edit or upload any of your SoundCloud tracks. 

If you don’t see the monetization tab appearing yet on SoundCloud, please wait 1 week from the day Proton helped you enable monetization, as it may take SoundCloud’s team awhile to process our request. If it's been a week and you still don’t see the monetization tab appearing when you edit or upload a track on SoundCloud, please contact us.

What can I monetize on SoundCloud?

The only songs you can monetize on SoundCloud through Proton are songs you’ve officially released on your label.  This means you CANNOT monetize DJ Mixes or unsigned tracks that you have not officially released on your label.

OK, how do I monetize an official track I’ve released through Proton?

Enabling monetization on a track requires 2 key steps on your SoundCloud track:

  1. Entering specific metadata in the “Metadata" tab.

  2. Enabling Monetization in the “Monetization” tab.

You can start monetizing a song as long as you have an official ISRC for your track, which gets assigned as soon as you schedule the release on Proton.

What is the metadata I need to enter?

To manually monetize an upload on SoundCloud, you’ll need enter 3 pieces of metadata in the "Metadata" tab of your SoundCloud upload:

  1. ISRC Code - Paste the ISRC code in from SoundSystem, details below!

  2. Publisher - Enter “Proton LLC” as the publisher to make sure royalties flow correctly to you and your artists.

  3. Composer (Optional) - Enter the names of your artists here.

This metadata should be added in the METADATA tab on your SoundCloud upload:

Where do I find the ISRC code for my tracks?

ISRC codes become available immediately after scheduling your release on Proton. Find the ISRC code by loading the track in SoundSystem and going to the “Details & Settings” tab, like this:

Finally, enable monetization and click “Monetization” in the “Monetize” tab:

The Monetization tab has various controls and configurations, but you only need to click “Monetization” under “Enable Monetization”. 

You’ll know your sound is being monetized when you see the monetization icon and “This track is monetizable” status message appear:

It may take SoundCloud up to 48 hours to enable monetization on your track. If you don’t see the monetization status appear after 3 days, please let us know.

In terms of freemium models, Spotify is leading the way with 53 million paying subscribers. According to the Music Industry Blog, Apple Music has around 28.2 million paying subscribers, with Amazon trailing in third place with 16 million customers. SoundCloud has 39.1 million paying customers across all other services.

Despite its dominance in paying users and a growth in revenue, Spotify's losses grew by 133 per cent in 2016, according to its financial results. Similarly, Deezer's managing director Alexis de Gemini said in July 2016 the company was hoping to be profitable by 2018.

While they struggle, Apple, Amazon and Google's music services, supported by their larger business portfolios, don't have the same pressure to deliver immediate profit. This doesn't mean they are immediately successful though. Apple executive Jimmy Iovine has said his job would be easier if Apple had a free-tier for subscriptions and claims the service would have 400 million users (it currently has 27 million paying subscribers).

Streaming services may be struggling financially, but they've led to a resurgence for the music industry, which has been plagued by piracy in the internet age. From March to May 2016, according to the UK Intellectual Property Office, 70 million tracks were accessed illegally online, a decline of 18 million for the same period in 2015.

"Whilst individual companies have to respond to their own particular circumstances, overall we’re seeing encouraging growth in consumption of music driven by audio streaming," Gennaro Castaldo, a spokesperson for the BPI, the music industry trade body, tells WIRED. "This is also resulting in an accompanying increase in trade revenues, which last year rose over five per cent, as more consumers switch from ‘free’ to monthly subscriptions".

According to the BPI, the UK generates around 1.3 billion weekly audio streams, a figure that could hit 70 billion across the entire of 2017. "We appear to have reached a point where an increasing number of fans, including younger Generation Z consumers, appreciate the benefits of investing in music," Castaldo adds.

What does this increased popularity for music streaming services mean for customers? "Generally speaking, the internet likes one winner," Carey says. He draws on examples of Google controlling search and Facebook being the most dominant social network. "For SoundCloud or Deezer to catchup with Spotify and Apple is going to take some doing"

One way this could be achieved, he says, is through innovation. And that's an area where streaming platforms are struggling. Exclusive content, which companies hoped would attract freemium customers to cough-up cash, hasn't been a big draw. With consumers unsure of what they're paying for, streaming is always going to struggle. And that's bad news for artists. "The consumer perception of paying for streaming does not equate to paying the artists – whereas for live tickets it seems much more clear cut that you're giving to artists," Carey says.

Slowly, new ways are being developed to make sure artists benefit from the royalties of their streams: Imogen Heap worked with Ujo to create a payments system using the cryptocurrency platform Ethereum. And then there's vinyl, sales of which soared to a 25-year high in 2016.

Today, SoundCloud announced that it is opening up its direct monetization program to the public, finally giving most artists the ability to make money off of the platform. The program, called SoundCloud Premier, was created four years ago but has been limited to an invite-only beta until now. SoundCloud’s self-monetization move follows Spotify’s recent announcement that it would begin letting indie artists make money off of songs that are self-uploaded to its platform.

In order to qualify for Premier, you must be an independent creator with a Pro or Pro Unlimited account and have at least 5,000 plays in the past month from SoundCloud-monetized countries (which, for now, is limited to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand). Your account can’t have any copyright strikes against it, and you have to be 18 years old (or age of majority in your country). Only original content will be accepted, but there are hints that, in the future, other content, like podcasts, remixes, and full DJ sets, will be considered. Any songs monetized with SoundCloud Premier are non-exclusive, and the creator retains all rights.

As far as what the payout structure looks like, SoundCloud’s press release says it is offering a “leading revenue share” that “meets or beats any other streaming service,” with artist payouts occurring monthly. Participation in Premier is free (outside of the required subscription), and eligible uploaded tracks are immediately available to be monetized.

The Verge reached out to SoundCloud for clarity on Premier’s payment structure. A representative for the company says that creators who monetize with SoundCloud Premier will get a 55 percent net revenue share for the songs they upload and own the rights to. Additionally, SoundCloud will pay publishing royalties to rights holders and societies. This is the same rate that was given to Premier artists when the program was in beta, and it should be noted that the 55 percent SoundCloud is offering is more than the split Spotify is offering indie artists who self-upload (which is 50 percent of Spotify’s net revenue and 100 percent of royalties). The representative also said Premier songs will be available to stream everywhere but will only monetize when played from the countries listed above.

In addition, some Premier artists might also see income via brand partnership opportunities, something that was tested in the service’s beta. These brand partnership opportunities are sponsorship packages offered to Premier artists, sometimes for tens of thousands of dollars. SoundCloud says the path to involvement in these partnerships is varied — a brand could already have an artist in mind, while sometimes SoundCloud will recommend artists to brands.

However, even if SoundCloud’s share percentage is higher, that doesn’t necessarily mean payouts will be higher. Premier’s payment system is based on revenue generated from advertising and subscriptions, so how much money you make is directly tied to how much money SoundCloud makes. It also means SoundCloud’s payout rate can fluctuate month to month. This is different from traditionally released music on most other platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, which pay out flat rates per stream, per negotiations and deals with labels.

Historically, these net revenue-based payouts for SoundCloud Premier artists have been lackluster, with a prominent artist manager telling The Verge last year that “the payouts are less than one-tenth of other platforms.” Today, another manager told The Verge that they usually choose to not monetize their artists’ songs on SoundCloud because the friction is “not worth the $50 we would make.”

How profitable SoundCloud Premier’s newly public-facing program will be for indie artists remains to be seen. Even if limited to a few countries, the expansion is a necessary step forward for SoundCloud, which has always posited itself as a creators-first outlet. Letting all artists directly make any money off of the original work they upload to the platform is crucial for the company, especially in the wake of Spotify’s announcement that it will let artists self-upload and monetize their content.

But allowing indie artists to make money is a wholly different notion from SoundCloud being as profitable for artists as other streaming platforms (which many already perceive as not paying enough). One management company that handles several large indie artists who participate in SoundCloud Premier tells The Verge, “We’ve always operated under the understanding that SoundCloud doesn’t pay shit. So if that’s changing, we’d like to know how.”

Ever wondered what a repost is worth? The repost feature changed SoundCloud forever. By getting others to ‘repost’ your track, it’s published to the streams of all their followers. Technically, a repost by an influential account could lead to significant exposure.

You may have seen the ads on SoundCloud before: “$50 for a repost, will blast to 150K followers”. It’s an increasingly common phenomenon, and an appealing offer for most smaller artists.

Yet if you’ve secured reposts with large SoundCloud channels, either by trading (exchanging reposts with equally sized accounts) or via paid promotion, you’ve probably noticed that the resulting plays don’t match the expectations.

You’d expect a channel with 10 times more followers than you to reach 10 times as many people with a repost. Reality however, paints us a different picture.

We set out to investigate this issue and paired up with a reader, Tim (Moomimurr), to look at the data. The goal was to establish the value of a repost, by analyzing the play-to-follower (how many followers actually listen to a repost) ratios of different channels and defining the variables that affect this ratio.


The repost bubble

SoundCloud has become a thriving ecosystem that hosts not just artists, but also record labels, artist collectives, promotional channels and networks. We covered these in our SoundCloud marketing & repost trading guide.

For beginning artists, the SoundCloud scene and ‘repost trading game’ may be hard to penetrate. Big channels prefer trading with big channels. At the same time, the offering of paid promotion is increasing, making it easy for artists to resort to paying for their reposts.

It’s a trend we’re seeing with record labels too. As the importance of SoundCloud expands beyond electronic music, labels of all sizes are catching on to the importance of having their SoundCloud plays on point. Their marketing efforts are now also directed to SoundCloud, including repost trading and sometimes paid campaigns.

While the research methodology of this article was initially intended to address just paid repost marketing, the findings apply to reposting in general. We were shocked by the results, even as they affirmed the belief that we had already formed by intuition — that the value of reposts was being diluted.

It turns out that followers are not the best indicator for how many plays you can expect to get from a repost.

The value of a repost is directly linked to the nature and behavior of the reposting SoundCloud channel. How often they upload, repost and who their audience comprises of are all impacting factors.

As the SoundCloud trading atmosphere is like the Wild West, these findings can help you better choose your repost partners, as well as better estimate the value of a paid promotional offer.


For this research, we paired up with someone with experience in statistics and coding, as we needed to mine data from the SoundCloud API.

Enter Tim.

By day Tim works for a notable management consulting firm, where he crunches data to find where businesses can improve efficiency and save money. By night, he’s something that you can likely relate to: a music producer.

Tim reached out to us following a statement by Budi, who said that there isn’t a reason to pay for reposts as the market is “completely non-transparent” and that reposts can be acquired by networking with influencers. Tim took it upon himself to analyze the data and to estimate the real efficiency of paid SoundCloud promotion.

The research question that Tim set out to answer is one that many SoundClouders may have asked themselves at some point: “How efficient is paid SoundCloud promotion?”. The answer to this question would also have implications for traditional (non-paid) reposts, as the mechanics are identical in nature.

To answer this question, we had to pull a huge amount of data on individual tracks. Not just total plays and hearts, but detailed information such as plays gained from reposts, who reposted what tracks, and how many followers those channels had.

We were able to extract this from SoundCloud’s API, which is short for Application Programming Interface. This is what applications and websites such as Hype Machine and Artist Union use to access upload information and incorporate embeds from.

Tim wrote a script that crunched the numbers on 8.000 tracks reposted by a selection of SoundCloud (promotional) channels; stats like who reposted what track, how many followers the reposted channels had, how often the channel reposted, while also collecting the stated prices for reposts to include into his analysis.

To avoid outliers messing up the data, such as a #1 Hype Machine charting position or a track with several strong YouTube uploads (that would draw traffic back to the SoundCloud upload), we picked tracks with minimal outside exposure. We limited the age to less than two months old, as we assumed that after that period, the track would be at the end of its promotional cycle and any additional plays would be unlikely to result from active repost promotion.

The average price charged for a repost was about $0,30 per thousand followers. For example, a 50K follower channel might charge $15 for a repost. This is a realistic market price from what we’ve seen offered.

How we established the contribution of a repost by a specific SoundCloud channel to an upload, is best explained as follows. Let’s say channel X reposts one of your tracks, netting you 50 plays. Then, channels X and Y repost another track, leading to 150 plays and another track reposted by channels X and Z earned 250 plays. With some simple algebra you can find each channel’s direct contribution.


The findings are shocking.

The average repost only generates plays equal to 3-4% of that channel’s following.

In other words, if a 100.000 follower channel reposted your track, it would probably only generate 3.000 – 4.000 plays. You, like us, had likely expected this number to be much higher.

At the 100.000 follower scale, 3-4% is not that bad, but in realizing that the majority of SoundCloud users have less than 1.000 followers, it becomes questionable whether all that time spent repost-trading is actually put to good use.

The bulk of channels had scarily low play-to-follower ratios, between 1-5%. Some were even as low as 1%, whereas a small portion of channels ranged between 10-18%.

Most of the low-ratio accounts were the repost channels, who reposted frequently throughout the day and had few original uploads on their account. By contrast, the high-ratio accounts were the labels and artists, who reposted significantly less and uploaded more often.

These varying play-to-follower ratios support our initial fear; that the value of reposts is diminishing.

A repost by a highly engaged 50.000 follower channel may do more for you than one from a poorly engaged 100.000 channel. The difference is significant, and reinforces the notion that you need to be careful in who you team up with.

The secret behiind strong reposts

So why do labels and artists have higher engagement ratios?

Labels and artists tend to curate more when it comes to reposts and uploads, favouring quality over quantity, allowing them to develop dedicated superfans. The opposite is true of promotional channels, who prioritize quantity over quality in a pursuit for more followers and scaling their networks.

The trend on SoundCloud, particularly with promotional channels, is to pair consistent reposts with like-to-download gate inclusion in order to accelerate follower growth. A channel might incorporate another channel in the download gate of their track, which then gives them an incentive to consistently repost that upload. That other channel might then do the same, and receive consistent uploads as well.

The result is a perpetuating cycle, where the increase in followers leads to more exposure (but not per se more plays). Also it creates an overlap of followers, which is common with SoundCloud networks that grow through daily repost and mutual gate-inclusion.

From a fan’s perspective the lack of engagement makes sense. If multiple channels repost the same song each day, you’re unlikely to click it. Eventually they end up ignoring the channels, or unfollowing them.

That’s not to say that all repost networks have poor engagement rates. The outliers are the ones that repost less frequently and upload more, acting more like labels.

The highest ratios are found with artist channels, who not only repost less often and upload more than promotional channels, but also exhume a personality that fans can connect with. It’s easier to love an artist than a repost channel or label, as there’s little personality you can connect with there.

The more a channel reposted per day, the less engaged their audience. Repost frequency had the strongest correlation to a channel’s play-to-follower ratio.

The graph illustrates it beautifully. Most channels that reposted fewer than 4 times maintained play-to-follower ratios as high as 15%. Audience engagement falls significantly at 5 daily reposts and beyond, with the bulk of the analyzed channels reposting between 6 and 17 times a day.

One can argue that artists are most cautious about what they repost, as they want to make sure they only repost material that resonates with their audience and is as good (or better) than what they’d make and upload themselves. They see the value in saving their audience and are rewarded by out-of-the-ordinary response whenever they do upload or repost something.

Improving your channel’s engagement

The biggest take-away is that you need to be careful not to exhaust your audience.

Both the frequency with which you repost (and upload), the quality of the material you repost and the degree with which it aligns with your audience’s tastes, impact your audience’s engagement.

There’s a significant tipping point in engagement with reposts exceeding four a day, which everyone should take to heart as their daily limit.

Reposting more often to overcompensate for the lack of plays is actually counter-productive and decreases engagement further. There’s a lot more to be said for reposting 4 times a day consistently and optimizing for ideal repost (or upload) times, leaving ample time in between each repost.

In respect to the paid-promotion market on SoundCloud, the average price charged by promotional channels isn’t far off from the results you can expect to get from their poorly engaged audiences.

As mentioned, the average price charged for a repost was $0,30 per thousand followers, whereas we found that the average cost per play was $0,013 USD.

An average repost channel with 50.000 followers might thus charge $15 USD for a repost, which at a 3% engagement ratio would lead to 1.500 plays. The average value of those plays is $19,50, meaning that you’d technically get more than you paid for.

The trick then, in maximizing results from paid promotion, is analyzing which channels have higher play-to-follower ratios, by looking at the frequency with which they repost and the quality of that music. Another optimization strategy could be to demand your paid repost is scheduled at that channel’s optimum engagement time, which is usually when the bulk of their audience has arrived at the office or school. For most electronic music promoters, the lion’s share of their audience is in the West Coast of the USA, for whom 10:00 AM PST would be perfect.

Now, truthfully, we have yet to experiment with paid SoundCloud promotion over at Heroic. We may attempt it at some point, just to see whether we could get a positive ROI, but as of now, we’re blessed to be working with a network of influential partners.

If you’re an artist with money to spend, it may be worth considering as a way to get your tracks early traction. Just make sure you scan your partners as carefully as you now (having read this article) will do for repost trades.

And don’t believe in the buy-in fallacy. Paying to getting your music heard is not required to succeed in today’s industry.

Great app except one thing.

The app works great, in my opinion it’s the best music app ever. It’s free and can actually pick what song you want to listen to whenever you want to listen to it, all with very little ads. You can pay to have the app ad free but no need for that. Also when you pay you can download songs for offline listening but I’ve noticed that if you put a song on a playlist and listened to it before at least once that it doesn’t have to load the next time you listen to the song so there is no need for paying. The only bad thing is there is this one thing called SoundCloud weekly on the homepage and it recamends you songs... but all the songs are usually really old like 1-3 years old, so I would like if it would recommend songs that are newer. Other than that if you live in a family that has very little money and you love to listen to music like I do (bus ride to school, bus ride home, when I play basketball, when I wanna jam out) and stuff like that it’s perfect. So SoundCloud if you see this please keep the app the way you have it. But maybe different color ways. I like when music apps change their color ways!

Playlist Organization

SoundCloud is great but there are a lot of glitches with playlists that need to be fixed. Trying to rearrange your songs in your own playlists is a hassle, it takes multiple tries to get the song to permanently move because it often just reverts back to where it was right after you moved it. I always have to close then reopen the open to check and make sure my songs moved to where I wanted them to. Also the icons you can upload for your playlist cover never seem to update unless you actually open up and go into the playlist. This doesn’t seem to be much of an issue on the desktop but on mobile my set display cover is never what I picked, it’s usually automatically always the same picture as the first song in that playlist. This gets really irritating because if I want people to check out my playlists, the first thing they see is the display image and I would rather them see the one I chose than of the picture from someone’s track! Lastly, please incorporate the option to move around your playlists. I have playlists from months ago that are at the way end of my profile and would rather have some of those at the forefront of my profile when you visit it.
Really hope you consider ideas to fix these problems. Otherwise great app and I’ll always be a user.

Very good but some issues

So I’ve been using this app for the past 3 years and it has been amazing, but somethings I would wish could change as well as some issues I’ve ran into. The first thing is the UI, if I type in a song and I spell it wrong I wish it could put up something close to that and not say “ No Results”. Second thing is that I wish when you went into your saved playlist that you would start at the bottom or the newest song and not the top, but those I can live with so I own an IPhone X, I’m not showing off or anything but this thing has amazing speakers and for some reason when I play a song it crackles and pops which is soooo annoying, I’m an audio geek and I can not listen to a song when it cracks and pops it’s just infuriating. And the last thing is something that I’ve wanted for so long is to be able to post songs from your phone because not all of us own computers, and or laptops but the option to be able to post songs from your phone would be awesome. I hope you bring these ideas in consideration and hopefully are able to fix that bug but anyways I love this app and this is the only way to listen to songs that are posted by non singers or artists.
