Pink (2016 film)

2016 film by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury

Pink is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language legal thriller film directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and written by Shoojit Sircar, Ritesh Shah and Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.[1] The film is produced by Rising Sun Films on a total budget of ₹30 crore, with screenplay by Shah and music composition by Shantanu Moitra and Anupam Roy.[4]Pink features an ensemble cast, which includes Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang, Angad Bedi, Tushar Pandey, Piyush Mishra, and Dhritiman Chatterjee.[5]

Pink was released in worldwide cinemas on 16 September 2016.[6] The film received widespread critical acclaim for the cast, execution, thrilling story, direction and engaging plot.[2]Pink emerged as a surprising commercial success earning over ₹157.32 crore globally.[3] The film completed a 50-day run theatrically.[7]

At 64th National Film Awards, Pink won the category of Best Film on Other Social Issues.[8] The film is remade in Tamil as Nerkonda Paarvai (2019) and in Telugu as Vakeel Saab (2021).[9]

Plot[edit]

Three young women — Minal, Falak and Andrea  — meet three affluent men, Raunak, Vishwajyoti, and Rajveer Singh, and they have some drinks together. Suddenly, Raunak, Vishwajyoti, and Rajveer rush to the nearest hospital because Rajveer is bleeding from a heavy injury to his head. At the same time Minal, Falak and Andrea return to their apartment in a taxi. They look disoriented, and it is implied that they have something to do with the incident.

The three women are independent and live together. They try to move on from what happened that night. During Minal's morning runs, she is observed by an old man in her neighbourhood, Deepak, who senses there is something wrong. Threats arise from Rajveer's friend Ankit, who pushes for revenge for the injury Minal caused Rajveer. The threats result in Falak losing her job. They are discouraged from filing a complaint, stating it would make their daily lives more miserable. In reality, the local police are aware that the men are "well-connected" and backed by Rajveer's uncle Ranjit, an influential politician. Minal goes to a higher-standing police officer and files a complaint.

The next day, she is kidnapped by Rajveer's friends. Deepak witnesses the incident but is unable to help. Minal is threatened, blackmailed, and molested in the moving car and dropped back home, leaving her shaken. A few days later, she is arrested based on a complaint from Rajveer labeling the women as prostitutes and charging Minal with attempted murder. At this point, Deepak becomes frustrated with the events and, after receiving advice from him, Andrea and Falak discover that he is actually a reputable lawyer in retirement. He helps Falak and Andrea with the bail procedures and decides to represent Minal in court.

In the courtroom, Rajveer's lawyer, Prashant Mehra, presents the following version of events: Rajveer and his friends meet Minal and her friends at a rock concert. They invite the women for dinner at a resort, where they have drinks. The women provoke the men, become intimate, and thereafter demand money, all signs indicating that they are prostitutes. Rajveer refuses to pay and an enraged Minal hits him on the head with a bottle and flees. Prashant's argument focuses on the poor moral character of the women. He attacks the fact that Minal has family in Delhi but chooses to live alone.

Minal and her friends' statement is this: The men tried to sexually assault them. Rajveer tried to rape Minal, and she attacked him with the bottle in self-defense. Deepak's argument focuses on the issue of consent and a woman's right to say no. A series of chilling courtroom arguments ensues in the following days. Toward the end of the trial, Rajveer becomes enraged and, provoked by Deepak, reveals the truth, stating that the women “got what they deserved”.

Deepak criticizes the regressed views of the society where women are stereotyped as prostitutes if they come home late, move out, want to be independent, drink and so on, but none of these apply to men. He closes with the fact that his client said “NO”. No means no, and does not require further explanation. The women are acquitted while Rajveer, Ankit, and Raunak are charged, with their sentences pending. Vishwajyoti is let off with a warning. The end credits scene reveal what actually happened: the men systematically isolated the women and Rajveer tried to force himself on Minal, who then attacked him with a bottle to his head in self defense.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

In early March 2016 Amitabh Bachchan revealed that he was shooting a film in Delhi. It was rumoured that the film was titled "Eve".[10] On 13 March Bachchan denied the rumours and announced through Twitter that the film is titled Pink.[11]

Director-producer Shoojit Sircar informed that Amitabh Bachchan accepted the role and Taapsee Pannu was their first choice.[12] Andrea Tariang was also selected to play the role of one of the girls in the film.[13][14] Tushar Pandey, Raashul Tandon and Arjun Chakraborty are making their debut with this film.[15]

Filming[edit]

The principal photography of the film began in New Delhi on International Women's Day, 2016.[16] The looks of Amitabh Bachchan in the movie was created by Shoojit Sircar however the idea of wearing the mask was suggested by Amitabh Bachchan since Delhi is very polluted.[17]

During the shoot, Amitabh Bachchan wandered the streets of New Delhi while wearing a costume in which the public could not recognise him.[18] Amitabh Bachchan finished filming his scenes in April 2016.[19]

Taapsee often broke down on the shooting sets as she felt her character was very strong and challenging.[20] She suffered from viral infection during the court scenes and wanted to dub later, however Shoojit felt that her illness would add more authenticity to the scenes.[21] Despite the hardships Taapsee enjoyed filming the scenes.[22]

The original climax of Rajvir and his friends winning the case was modified so as not to hurt the sentiments of the audience.[23]

A special screening of the film was held for Amitabh Bachchan's co stars and the leading ladies of Bollywood.[24] However Amitabh Bachchan could not attend the screening due to health issues.[25] Taapsee also arranged a special screening of the film for the Telugu film industry at Hyderabad.[26]

Bishan Singh Bedi, father of Angad Bedi, arranged a special screening of the film in Delhi which was attended by cricketers like Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh.[27]

Marketing[edit]

Shoojit Sircar and Amitabh Bachchan questioned their fans on Twitter as to what they think the film title "Pink" is all about.[28]Times of India had opened a contest in which 5 lucky winners got a chance to meet Amitabh Bachchan and other 10 winners got free movie tickets of the movie -Pink.[29] The winners were announced on 15-September-2016.[30]

The world television premier was held on 23 – October 2016 on Star Gold and to commemorate the same, Amitabh Bachchan's house Jalsa, Carter Road Promenade and SNDT Women's University were illuminated in pink colour.[31]

The title of the film has no relationship as being the favourite colour of girls but rather conveys that women should have the freedom to speak and walk freely at night.[32]

Soundtrack[edit]

Release[edit]

The film was specially screened for the Rajasthan Police so as to train them to be sensitive and sensible about women's rights and dignity.[33] The film was also specially screened at Rashtrapati Bhavan[34] and invited for a screening at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.[35][36]

Critical reception[edit]

Meena Iye of The Times of India and Shubha Shetty Saha of Indiatimes gave the film 4.5 stars.[37] Mayank Shekhar from Mid-Day gave the film 4/5 stars, saying, "The film, up until the closing credits, does not even visually describe the said incident. It grips you still with a gently piercing background score, moments of silence and dialogue, building up the tension, while the audience wonders what really could have happened one unfortunate night when three girls found themselves in a Surajkund resort with three guys."[38]

Anna M.M. Vetticad of Firstpost called Pink a powerful film.[39]Filmfare, India Today, Mumbai Mirror, Hindustan Times, The Statesman, and DNA have given 4/5 stars, highly appreciating the superlative performances, especially of Amitabh Bachchan. Critics like Anusha Iyengar and Mayank Shekhar called it movie of the year. Namrata Joshi of The Hindu also praised the film.[6] Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express gave the film 3.5 stars.[40]

Rajeev Masand from CNN-News18 rated the movie as 4.5/5 mentioning that "I left the cinema, my mouth dry at the end of Pink. This isn't just an important film, but also excellently made. It's a giant leap for Hindi cinema, and easily the best film this year".[41]

Box office[edit]

Pink grossed approximately ₹4.32 crore on first day in India.[42][43] The first weekend collection was ₹21.51 crore.[44][45]

At the end of 7 days the domestic box office collection was ₹35.91 crore.[46] Pink grossed ₹50 crore in first 10 days in India.[47][48]

Pink Floyd - The Wall Photos

Movie Info

In this visual riff on Pink Floyd's album "The Wall," successful but drugged-out musician Pink (Bob Geldof) is looking back on his isolated childhood from the confines of a Los Angeles hotel room. Through a swirl of flashbacks and chemical-induced hallucinations, Pink recalls his lonely upbringing, during which he built a symbolic wall to the world as he coped with the death of his father (James Laurenson) and the overbearing ways of his mother (Christine Hargreaves).

Melodramatic Mess with an Annoying First-Person Narration / 4 Stars

nairtejas30 June 2020

If you can manage to bear the unabashed oversmart and touchy first-person narration by the overzealous central character (or villain as the character likes to call herself) and the cringeworthy sequences that form as a result, you will be able to complete watching The Sky is Pink, a film that tries to be so doe-eyed and gooey it's hard to not shake your head in displeasure after every other sequence. Even if you do agree with the views that the film advocates, it will be challenging to appreciate the decisions these characters take. It is that sort of a movie where you forcefully end up judging the characters and that usually does not work well for a movie that depends on manipulating its viewer's emotions by milking the tear gland.

Performances are stunning and I really loved Priyanka Chopra. Farhan Akhtar comes second but it is the chemistry between them and the equal parenting that they showcase (or pinpoint) that helped me finish the movie which is also terribly long and purely hagiographical. More than anything, if you were to appreciate the movie, then appreciate it for its take on death, its acceptance, and grief. About everything else, it's a sugarcoated mess produced only to immortalise the life of someone who had a rare disease. TN.

Cheers to what one make's of what's got left!

MuviFan7328 April 2020

Tone & Story: The movie is a drama surrounding a girl who faces medical challenges. She dies at the age of 18. The movie portrays story of her family and the challenges they face.

I watched the movie very late the reason being trailer. The trailer does not justifies the beauty of this movie. The only thing it justifies is that it is bought from the makers of Barfi and Dangal. For this movie I would like to say don't judge the book by its cover.

The movie is based on a story that happened for real. Thus making its place even more concrete in category to watch.

Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography, Music, Acting: Justified in every mentioned aspect.

Final Verdict: Please watch it guys you will have a great ride.

Lengthy but also heart-wrenching

ronakkotian19 October 2019

It felt great to see something out of the ordinary in terms of the recent style Bollywood has adapted to so it was nice to witness a film that felt fresh and not adding to the string of social films in the past few years.

The Sky is Pink is the story of Aditi and Niren Chaudhary over the course of two decades as they cope with their daughter's medical condition which may not allow her to live for too long.

I'm not the type of person that loves dramas. They usually feel very slow and boring as a result. Whilst The Sky is Pink has the same problem, there is some great performances, humour and emotional moments that really tug at your heart strings.

Shonali Bose, known for Margarita with a Straw, writes a heartfelt script alongside Nilesh Maniyar that tries to capture all the sweet and sour moments of the Chaudharys and make us feel the triumphs and struggles of this family. What really brings the film down is its lengthy runtime. A runtime of 2 hours 20 minutes is far too long to present this story and you do feel the film slowing down, even to a point where it starts to get tedious.

The performances throughout are very strong. It's been three years since Priyanka Chopra's last Bollywood movie but she gives a staggering return. I completely understood her character which she portrayed effortlessly. Farhan Akhtar plays a great husband to Chopra and both have great chemistry. It felt believable especially a scene taking place inside a restaurant bathroom where I felt like I was seeing a real couple arguing rather than actors trying to replicate it. Finally, Zaira Wasim did a fantastic job. I genuinely cared about what she was going through and she pulled the role off really well.

As mentioned before, the film did get dull during the second act. I wish the film focused more on the character of Aisha since the movie dedicated way too much time on Aditi and Niren's past. Some scenes didn't have an enough emotional impact on me. You could tell something depressing was happening but you couldn't feel its entire force.

It's nice to see a story like this being told. There are some really sad moments spread throughout that create a huge impact on the audience but the slow pacing may hinder that experience. The performances are really good alongside the heart-wrenching scenes, towards the end, which may or may not bring a couple of tears to your eyes.

A good movie.

Azanspy11 March 2020

The Sky Is Pink is one of the most anticipated movie released last year because of its cast and crew and mainly because it's based on a true story. The audience knew this movie will be an emotional melodrama and yes, it's very emotional but at the same time the movie is filled with happiness. The movie has it's weakness but still TSIP is a pretty good movie. Priyanka Chopra have a very good powerful performance along with Farhan Akthar. Zaira Wasim was also really good at it's too sad that she's already retired. Rohit Saraf also did well. The music and songs were pretty good. Shonali Bose did a good job overall. Watch TSIP and have a good time and take the movie's messages seriously.

About Life & Love and everything in between

saru20209 February 2020

This movie is based upon true events, basically upon a girl's life who's going to live for a short period and the disease is not cancer but a different one which hasn't been shown in any other movies I've watched at least. The entire film's voice over is given by that girl based upon whom it is made. I was expecting that this would be about portraying the lives of people, generally about LIFE and it was exactly as I had expected, I don't know why but somehow I like watching people's lives in the feature-length films and mostly because of the way the Bollywood films are made, I'm referring to Farhan Akhtar's sister Zoha but this was made by Shonali Bose and I was not disappointed though as it had the same feeling of watching over the reels of the lives of people living their lives from the start to the end with those more than usual timing of the character's gauging into the eyes of others which is literally like conveying the message across to the other person without even uttering a word, I was thinking that Farhan Akhtar's acting makes me feel that way but I think it is about the maker who gives such intense no-dialogue scenes that conveys something that cannot be interpreted but only is felt. I wish that Bollywood keeps giving films like these to let their industry keep running, haha.

a heart warming tale

beevenkat13 October 2019

A young girl suffers from a terminal illness but puts on a brave face - her parents r shattered but they too try to act normal - they let her experience life to the fullest - they encourage her to go on a date with a guy whom she likes - #TheSkyIsPink narrates a heart warming tale but doesnt let the tragedy dominate the proceedings - Priyanka Chopra is excellent n definitely deserves to be seen more often on the big screen - u will like the other actors too - the brother sister bonding is very well depicted - running time should be reduced by 20 minutes - rating 3/5.

Never cried so much watching a movie.

akhil02714 January 2020

This is not something we have not seen before. We have heard or seen or even went through similar situations. We know what's going to happen in the movie. But still, Shonali Bose makes tears stream down on your face. I love how she picturized story of Chaudhary family without being so dramatic. The movie felt so real because of the direction. Yes, we get to see it's a real story at the end but still, Shonali deserves the credit. The actors have done an excellent job. Even the kids. Farhan Akthar and Priyanka Chopra gave their career best performance. The make up artist deserves an applaud for keeping their looks realistic at all age. Whoever did the make up of Chichchore, take notes. Grab some tissues and watch this.

rehmankhilji18 December 2019

Movie based on true story and it has been so wonderfully and beautifully performed by all actors. Especially Zaira Wasim, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Rohit Saraf is marvellous. Too bad such good cinema does not go well on the box office which is a shame. A must watch, you might end up cheering much things in your life.

Zaira Wasim is grt 👍,, plzz come back & dont leave bollywood.

Tejas_Vinda_AITS11 October 2019

Based on a true story, 'The Sky is Pink' touches an emotional chord from the word go.

As Aisha's (Zaira Wasim) lively voiceover takes over from the start of the film, we are drawn into Aditi (Priyanka Chopra) and Niren's (Farhan Akhtar) life instantly. A life that turns upside down almost right after Aisha's birth.

Soon after she is born, Aisha is diagnosed with SCID, a rare genetic disorder that is life threatening.

Her parents, Aditi and Niren make it their life's mission to do whatever it takes to make her survive for as long as possible.

Priyanka Chopra is remarkable as Aditi, a mom obsessed with making her child live life to the fullest.

Farhan Akhtar as Niren, is okay as the supportive husband and the father.

Zaira Wasim is grt 👍 with her vibrant energy.

Overall, The Sky Is Pink is a heartwarming story narrated with a balanced mix of emotions but Lengthy runtime makes it boring at some points..!!

Over dramatic

rohit_vit202023 June 2020

It is sad though to see someone struggling life between life and death. But, I felt the movie was more dramatic, and stretchy. The background intro from the point of view of Aisha is awesome move, but then Moose/Panda these names confuse you with the characters, everytime I think who is Moose, who is Panda, as I cannot quickly associate with the gender as the short names were confusing.

There was a lot of switch between scenes moving from one time to another time leading to more confusion. The story does not show what does his father do as a job.

Overall - 6/10

Speechless

nikree28 August 2020

I personally hate cliche exaggerating taglines. But, this movie is one of the best, should be watched before you die, better than some acclaimed movies, and yes- definitely should've gotten an oscar.

Throughout the movie, it was a cinematic brilliance and so touching. A biographical narrative so interestingly woven is it reaches fictional perfection.

The sky is really Pink.

Not what I expected. Better!

sunchick116-872-58338320 October 2019

This movie could have very easily been a sob story about the struggles of a teenager with a terminal disorder, but instead director Shonali Bose took the different and brilliant approach of telling the story of her parents love story. Their ups, their downs, and everything in between. Don't be fooled by this film. Yes it has sad moments but is a dark comedy more than everything. You laugh more than you cry. Don't know how much more I can say without spoiling, but definite must see!

santoshambekar1921 December 2019

Shonali Bose has directed a masterpiece with a true story of a your diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis since her birth. The tale is of a strong girl Aisha Chaudhary who with her own lenses tells the story of her parents and depicts life's deep meaning. The story folds and unfolds with many different emotions and takes us through a rollercoaster of emotions. a must watch film.

Triumphant tear-jerker!

SinhaSomesh10 October 2019

#FinalVerdict

Few filmmakers stick their necks out to tell difficult stories. For their intentions alone, Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP Movies & Roy Kapur Films deserve a thumbs-up. Take a bow, Shonali Bose!

Some films are more than just cinematic expressions and The Sky Is Pink is one such film where director Shonali Bose has worked herself to the grind & her presence is felt in every frame. Her devotion and dedication towards her craft is truly inspirational. The Sky Is Pink is special in more ways than one. In my individualistic opinion, it easily ranks amongst this year best works so far. Just don't miss this one!

Clearly, the writing (Shonali Bose & Nilesh Maniyar) is smart, taut and absorbing. Kudos! The emotions in The Sky Is Pink would've fallen flat had the writing been sub-standard or the execution of the material been humdrum or the actors been inferior. But, thankfully, it scores in all three departments. All said and done, it's an outstanding film!

The story is complex but The Sky Is Pink is *not* disheartening or unsettling. The emotional quotient is tremendous. You'll overhear a lot of sniffs & see a lot of moist eyes once the lights are switched on. But it's a positive film & not a rona-dhona movie. Irrespective of how this film performs at the box-office, but note this, director Shonali Bose would be a force to reckon with after The Sky Is Pink. Pritam's music is soothing. Nick Cooke & Kartik Vijay's cinematography is incredible. The very effective and subtle background score (Mikey McCleary1) is The Sky Is Pink's very backbone. For the very first time, I felt that I was not hearing the background score, I was feeling it. Dialogue (Juhi Chaturvedi & Nilesh Maniyar) will touch your soul.

Now to the performances! Farhan Akhtar & Priyanka Chopra make the characters so plausible. It must be said that Farhan Akhtar & Priyanka Chopra exude a certain dignity and elegance, much needed for a sensitive film of this magnitude & caliber. Kudos to them! That doesn't mean that the remaining performances get dwarfed. Not once does Zaira Wasim dither from her position. This is the hallmark of a tremendous actor, which Zaira Wasim is. Rohit Saraf is a revelation, another surprise of The Sky Is Pink. Amazing!

Manas Mittal's editing is so well synchronized that the 2+ hours of your precious life that you would spend on this movie are absolutely worth your while. On the whole, The Sky Is Pink is an amazing experience. Should win awards & also box-office rewards. It should strike a chord with everyone with a heart. An unmissable film which encapsulates the true essence of life & death & seduces the viewer with a strong emotional quotient.

Why So Good? Must Watch Family Movie

sayamasjad24 January 2021

One of the finest Indian movie I watched in a recent time. Starting from outstanding direction to a unique storyline with the emotional screenplay, it was brilliant and amazing on so many levels. It will take you on a journey of long-lasting impression. Farhan Akhtar is as good as he always in every role and who can question the performance of Priyanka Chopra? Zaira Wasim played her role of Aisha Chaudhary flawlessly and forced us to love her. This movie leaves us with a feeling that is hard to shake, that the most difficult part about life is not that it is sad or pitiful; rather, it is wondrous and joyous, even when all the evidence points to the contrary. If you've ever been in a dark room for a sufficiently long time, you'd have noticed that darkness provides its own light. Happiness is, after all, inevitable, you can run but you can't hide. It will leave you in a devasted phase where you want to cry and laugh at the same time. You wanna cry but couldn't, you wanna hug someone but (if you're married, you can) can't. I recommend this movie to everyone, it's not a typical commercial movie.

hiralpatel-4275212 October 2019

Beautiful makes u cry and laugh at the same time. Acting was good as well. About the people who are saying that overacting by priyanka, i think main reason behind that is maybe she is a never been in that kind of role before so no one want to think her as a mother or maybe people just hate her but the acting was quite good.

A heart rending tale

srd-306597 February 2020

The Sky is Pink shakes you up. The story of the girl who is afflicted with a deadly disease is gut renching. Director Shonali Bose's directs the film with great restraint not to turn it into melodrama and yet, keep a hanky handy because no matter what the tale based on a real life story is touching. The trials tribulations and trauma of parents and the brother are pictured with sympathy and understanding of the reality of the circumstances. Zaira Wasim as the unfortunate girl Aisha performs her role with great understanding. Her loss to the Hindi cinema world is unfortunate as she has decided to leave it. Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhirat are superbly convincing. The Sky is Pink is a cathartic viewing experience. Go for it.

very painful journey of love and loss.

tarekali-1990914 December 2019

Here I thought Priyanka's best acting days were behind her, and that she focused on shallow roles geared towards the USA. But she has proven me very wrong with an incredible performance in Sky is Pink. Farhan Akhthar and the whole cast of this movie is amazing, taking us through a very painful journey of love and loss. If I went through this ordeal I would go mad. The fact it's a true story makes it even more resonant. The ordeals a couple goes through to keep their kids alive and healthy, the emotional torture, it is very raw and well demonstrated in this under-appreciated movie.

Yet another wannabe Hollywood movie.

JPEI6412 December 2019

This true story could have had so much potential. Sigh! Why do Hindi movies always botch it up? Not a single original performance, although Priyanka has puts up a good front. Farhan looks lost and has no chemistry whatsover with Priyanka. The child male actor acts precocious and is reminiscent of child actors of the 60's, and 70's (Bittu, Guddiya,, Baby you name it). Wasim is good and shame she has left movies. The dialogue is cringe worthy and at times downright embarrassing. 3 stars for Priyanka and Wasim.

Sovik_Das24 December 2019

Innovative story telling supported by brilliant acting of Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Zaira Wasim. One of the few bollywood movies that can make you cry. Certainly a must watch.
